I don't know how many titles Ashland has, but like our teams prior to 60 (the 30, 43, 57 teams) that I think SHOULD be recognized, it would be a complete slap in the face to the former players on either side for their titles to not be considered "real." That's worse than anything lefty or I could say. If it were anyone else saying this, that hadn't called us out, I would let it slide. Heck you probably would have jumped on lefty or I if we had said it.

I should not be dismissive of Ashland's mythical state titles (and I am not using mythical in a pejorative sense). I apologize T-CATS for minimizing Ashland's history. The only problem with mythical state titles is determining who has them. That is why I do not say that Highlands has 24 state titles though some might. I guess I only go back to 1959 when the playoffs started.
This being said, how many does Ashland consider that they have since I have now seen 10, 11, and 13 mentioned but I only see 2 on the KHSAA site. Not trying to stir the pot but actually curious as to how many and what years.

No. Only the educated, accomplished, and dignified use the word "vulgarity". Apparently, you would not be included in that group.
And, for those of us who don't associate with Ashland, who is Herb Conley?

Ashland blazer loves claiming those mythical titles from the pre depression era. If you can print a banner you can claim a championship. It's their way of making themselves feel better.
Blazer has probably reaped the reward of more transfers over the years than anybody. It's hilarious that they would be critical of anybody when it comes to that.

Ashland has some talent. If the Ashland coach is as good as Ashland fans claim, he will come up with a game plan that can keep them in the game. IMO Ashland has some great kids that will hit you, they have some speed and they have heart but their coaching staff is not very good. I don't see them having a game plan that will keep them in the game vs a team like Highlands.

Herb Conley is a former coach of Blazer from the 1970s. I hate to use vulgarity but the term jackass is the first thing that comes to mind.

Come on boys. These mythical titles are not real titles. Either you won a championship game or you didn't win a championship game. Self-declared titles are not titles. And, I'm not saying that just because Ashland apparently "claims" a number of them. No schools can honestly count a mythical, self awarded title. You can't build a legitimate "tradition" on phantom titles.
I don't mean to offend anyone who played for these teams claiming phantom titles. However, they know that they, in reality, won nothing. Stick to the real world- not a fantasy world.

Didnt now cussing was so taboo. 1926, 28, 29, 30, 31(National and State),32,33,35,42,58,67,75,90. Their will be 13 state title flags at the new Putnam Stadium.

All that sounds fine- for Ashland. However, I feel sure that your last sentence is a bit of an exaggeration. Most football followers around the Commonwealth, I feel quite sure, aren't particularly familiar with the name and, like me, would have to ask.

I don't doubt it. And, in the real world, we can see that only one (1990) is legitimate. The others are phantoms. Maybe you should use invisible flags.
11-06-2012, 07:36 PM
Just because you print a flag doesn't make it true.
Those national title games from the 1920s. Where were they played? Same place as the state title games? Oh yeah.. There weren't any. Prime example of Ashland Blazer trying to live off of the distant and mythical past.

Now those are the facts. One credible championship equals zero credible "tradition". Since you boys want to put up flags, why not put up forty or so. Then you can claim to be ahead of FTH and Trinity. It makes as much sense as your claim of multiple invisible championships.

Blazer has 2 state titles. Which is nothing to sneeze at. Most schools don't have any.

You've also taken your share of losses from us. You have the upper hand now but that goes back and forth and it will again.
I think this is a good team you kitty cats have but not that good. If you played on the 90 team you should know a good team when you see it. This current team has some holes.

Honestly as good as the Blazer defense is I think you will struggle to stop the Bluebird offense. Your front line is very good but I don't think you can matchup and slow down the FTH passing game.
The Blazer offense really isn't that good even before Baker got hurt. They flourish on big plays and the fact that your defense is usually good enough to shut the other team down. I think losing Watts in the preseason was the biggest loss and Jackson before he got hurt was stronger than Baker.
I think it will be a long night on top of the hill for you guys. But at least they don't have that canon anymore.
You have to respect FTH. They probably knocked us out of a couple of state titles too in the. 70s and 80s. They've been consistently good for a long time. That is tradition .

Ashland does have a good team for this Tri-state area but to say that this team can honestly compete with Highlands is silly. You can have all the heart in the world but I'm just calling balls and strikes here. Won't be a contest. My grandfather played on some of those championship teams at Ashland and he never once called them championship teams. He would tell me how sometimes they would get called out from other schools challenging them and Ashland would go and thump them. Undefeated seasons but yet the schedule was sometimes put together.

Did he show you his rings? Better yet, did you catch a name? I'm sure there's no shortage of wannabes who never stepped on the field, but magically became a three-time state champion when they're a few hours away from home with a beer or two under their belt. Elder kids don't have any interest in playing for anyone but Elder. Football might be closer to religion over in Delhi than anyplace outside of Texas.

Come on T-CATS, you are being silly and losing credibility fast. I can guarantee you that Elder's stud player was not approached by any Highlands coach or administrator about playing at Highlands nor was any other Elder player. Could some rogue fan have said something to the kid if they knew one another? Sure I guess. But beyond that, no way. Besides, if you knew the Elder mentality, asking an Elder kid to transfer to another Ohio school (much less a Kentucky school) is like asking a family dependent on the coal industry to send a campaign donation to President Obama. It's not going to happen.
I'll accept what you said about what you were told as you being truthful, although I have my doubts based on your other posts. If some former Highlands player did tell you that, you should be embarrassed about being buffaloed by a young man.
I know the kids on the team as I am close to the program. I have been close to the program for quite some time. I will say it simply and to the point: the perception that Highlands has Ohio players on its team (an allegation I hear from time to time in the playoffs from fans of programs we will be playing) is completely bogus and false. You do not hear those allegations from fans of N. Ky opponents who are much more familiar with the Highlands football program. Just think about this in a calm moment: if Highlands had Ohio players on their team, the fans of our N. Ky opponents would know it and would be screaming about it. They are not.

I had the opportunity to meet a Highlands coach at a baseball tourney at Ft Knox about 4 years ago. He was very candid in his conversation about allegatons of rule violations. He made a statement that has bee echoed on here earlier. He said something to the effect of, "The program recruits itself. All of the coaches are on guard 24/7 against anything that would cause an accusation. Even to the point that if my son were a good middle school player in the northern KY area and someone saw us having this conversation it could cause problems. Good players enroll at Highlands because their parents want the best opportunity and all the Ohio tags on cars in the parking lot are more than likely from people who drive company cars and work in Cincinnati." I am not even sure how the topic came up but he was a class act all the way during our conversation. I am old and can't remember his name, but that really doesnt matter, point is they are King of the Mountain right now and if you want to be King for a day you have to knock them off. Is it probable, no. Is it possible, yes. Whatever degree of hope that Ashland has they will take it and run with it and at the end of the day, if these kids want to be remembered, they will accomplish the improbable.

Excellent post! The coaches are on guard against recruiting. You can't take one step toward the facilities without permission from Coach Mueller if your student/athlete is currently enrolled at an out of district school and has been accepted as a future student at Highlands. No conversing with any coach, asst coach, no one. The coaches don't need to recruit. The success of it's educational program does it for them. HHS is in the 99 percentile of the entire state, along with the middle school and elementary schools. The successful football program is just an added benefit.
And for the record, there are exactly 8 students, sophomore thru senior that are out of district tuition students. 2 are from Kenton County and the other 6are from Campbell County. 8 out of 91...8.79% wow, that's HUGE...:HitWall:
