Bourbon Co. 28 Garrard Co. 8
#1
Final

I was not all that impressed with Bourbon....at all. Garrard fought hard and played a pretty good ballgame up until the last quarter when the bottom fell out. Very proud of the Golden Lions....they fought hard. They've got nothing to hang their heads about.

With that being said, I will comment on what took place tonight.

First off, with the score 28-8 with a minute left in the ball game, Bourbon County was trying to score again. They were running the hurry up, even throwing the ball with less than a minute left. Garbage!

After the game, Bourbon fans were yelling insults and taunting the Garrard players as they went to their locker room. And, as unbelievable as it sounds, there were Bourbon fans who were 'humping' the Golden Lion statue near the locker room. The Sheriff had to intervene to put a stop to that.

While waiting for my Golden Lion player to come out of the locker room after the game, I saw a Bourbon player come from their locker room, shirtless, only wearing his girdle and head to the parking lot to their bus. Pretty tacky and classless....just my opinion, but I know that stuff wouldn't fly with Coach Scenters.

Speaking of Coach, he runs the Garrard program with class. On and off the field...before and after games. After what I saw tonight....can't say the same for the opposing coach.

One thing is for sure...you really can tell that Bourbon isn't used to winning on a consistent basis.....just based on their behavior tonight.

I agree with Profressor7. Sounds like sour grapes. Bourbon came in and won the game. They outplayed the Golden Lions. Leave it at that. Every fanbase has their bad apples, some more than others.

I traveled to watch this game anticipating a good game. Really the perfect storm and a good game plan kept garrard in this game early. U could tell fron the start that their plan was to run it 40 to 50 times and keep the clock moving, and it worked in the first half. When Bourbon got rolling in the second half GC fell apart. That being said it was a good game from both teams but it is apparent that Bourbon will struggle with the big boys like Breathitt and Bell if their front line does not improve drastically.

I try not to down grade a team, fans, or coaches on here. But, what a lack
of character and class all the way around from BC. You can call it Haters all
you like!! I have no respect for the BC Program!!!!

You can look at my posts about Belfry kicking our butt in last years Region
title game... I have total admiration and respect for the Belfry fans, players,
and coaches. If Garrard is not playing and a Belfry/Bourbon game happens,
I'll put on my Garrard attire and sit right in the middle of the Belfry faithful to
show my respect for the Belfry program. I invite all GC fans to join me!

I don't think you can all it lack of class alot of these people are immature kids who get caught up int the emotion of one of the biggest wins in school history. Now if any adult were acting that way sure is a lack if class. But I think you cut the kids some slack.

What do you call a coach who is up by 20 points with less than a minute and a half left, in the opposing teams territory, running the hurry-up offense...even throwing the football with less than a minute left? Bourbon ran 5 offensive plays in the last 1:30 of the ballgame...up by 20 points.

Cannot wait to hear other people's opinions on this.....

I am pretty much done with this,,,, I do hope GC sees them again in Playoffs!!

Did either team sub in 2nd string (jv players) or was both teams starters still in the game?

My opinion is....If you don't like being scored on then stop the other team. This is high school football, not Pop Warner league. You play until the final buzzer. If the GC players got their feelings hurt by it then they need to toughen up and come out stronger next game so it doesn't happen again.

Why would you want to lose to Bourbon County again if you hate them so much?

Two things should be noted here. Bourbon's second string came in from what I could tell after the final interception that set the ball up around the 30 or 40. Also, Bourbon's head coach is from Garrard County, and his wife is actually a teacher there from what I hear, so I doubt he was trying to run up the score. When I coached it was always business as usual. If my JV is in, it is your job to keep us from scoring. There is no use in putting in the JV to take a knee, they are put in to get work.

Starting to sound more and more like sour grapes.

Looking at Bourbons schedule, they don't like they play much other than a Bath Co. Team that I don't know is legit. Could it be Bourbon was trying to run hurry up for practice purposes? Garrard could be the only team that may challenge them until the playoffs? Why not do it against a solid team like Garrard...just a thought, no iron in either fire.

Don't Hate them,,, just have no respect for their actions... Second, go
around, I honestly feel that it will have a different ending...

In the final 1:30, Hopkins carried the ball twice and Pope threw a pass...Both first stringers. Looked more like an attempt to pad stats/run up the score than it was to get the JV some work....The JV wasn't even in the game.

Next excuse?

Wow, thought I would get more intelligent/factual responses from people. Guess when someone throws in the 'when I used to coach' card, all hope for that goes out the window.

Agreed,,,, They let the other losses roll off their shoulders. This one ticked
them off and may have been what was needed for them to focus in. But with
under a 2 minutes to go and up by 20, you don't try to run sweeps and throw
the ball with your starters. It should have been JV/ backup time!

I'm going to chime in on more time with some intelligent/factual information and anybody who 'actually' was at the game on Friday would have a hard time disputing it.

Bourbon Co. did not put together a sustainable drive the entire night. Their 3 offensive touchdowns came on 3 big plays which covered 201 yards of their 346 total yards. The other 36 plays that Bourbon ran netted them only 145 yards.

Garrard ran 58 plays to Bourbon's 39 and ended up with more first downs, 13, compared to Bourbon's 8 for the entire game.

Garrard controlled the clock and field position for most of the night.

Heading into the last couple minutes of the 3rd quarter the score was Garrard 8, Bourbon 6.

One would be hard to argue that up until the bottom fell out for Garrard, Garrard outplayed Bourbon for almost the first 3 quarters.

So, let me head you haters off at the pass with some cliche's that I am sure will be thrown out there in response to this....
1.) the only thing that matters is the final score
2.) big time teams make big time plays
3.) blah blah blah....
4.) sounds like more sour grapes...

Speaking of 'sour grapes'...I do believe Hodge put in for the Garrard job after Stonebreaker left....and he didn't get it...just saying. So maybe that, as well as they didn't beat GC as bad as they thought they were going to maybe contributed to what happened in the last 1:30 of the game.....

With all that being said.....I'm done with this topic.

I was at the game. However, I cant agree with the other posters. I didn't notice any classless things happening. If Bourbon was trying to run it up my guess is that they would have been throwing at the end zone. One fan informed me that the last pass caught by the Bourbon player was his 1st catch of the season. I know the running back was a freshman on the last carry. I thought Garrard played well. Bourbon looked a little out of sync...but thats what happens when you adjust to better competition. I look for both teams to represent their district strongly in the playoffs. I only wanted to comment because i think this thread is making the post game look way worse than what it was. I thought both teams showed mutual respect and got better because of the game. If some of the fans were bitter about a team celebrating a win then I am sure we will hear much worse things in the future from Garrard fans when they travel to other parts of the state. This was too good of a game to solely focus on the last minute plays and your hurt feelings. Good luck to both teams in the future.

No one really cares what you think of the BC program for whatever reason.
If you ask me Bourbon needed to continue the campaign for reps due to the fact this is the first game they have had to play past half time. I cannot speak for what I would call trash from Bourbon that caused the uproar. The kids humping the Lion is just plain stupid!!! As far as grown adults taunting GC players.....again see my previous statement. I was there for quite awhile after the game and later spoke with quite a few of the coaches and never once was I told about such ignorance that evidentally went on after I left.

The game..... Garrad came in with good game plan and executed it very well until midway through the 3rd. I look forward to playing Garrad again on BC field again soon!!!

idk about backup time I've seen some crazy endings.. Maybe the coach was just trying some things to see how his team executed. Since I wasn't at the game this is just me playi g devils advocate an entirely speculation. If what is said that 3 adults needed to be escorted by sherrifs those three people should be ashamed

Hey lighten up Francis, no need to get all personal. It looks like this loss stung a little ... to you .... personally. Maybe you should rally the troops and get them ready for the playoffs rather than whining on a message board about getting beat.

Here's the point ... JV or Varsity, your job is to stop the other team from scoring, and their job is to score on you. If this is something you feel GC can't handle against Bourbon County, then maybe you shouldn't be hoping for that playoff rematch.

It was 14-8 Bourbon to start the 4th Quarter

Garrard Started out with the ball in the 4th quarter, on their first drive with all the rushing they chewed alot of clock pretty much.

Garrard turned it over on downs in their Redzone

Next Play for Bourbon is a 84yd TD by Kentayvus Hopkins
(Advocate Messenger has Kentayvus Hopkins scoring at 6:27 remaining in the 4th)
PAT puts Bourbon up 21-8

On the ensuing kickoff Bourbon got a Penalty,
not sure where? Lets say Garrard starts off between the 30-40 Yard lines.

They were intercepted on the 35yd of Bourbon (Joey Gomez 65 interception return at 1:48)

28-8

In GC's next series they are intercepted on the first play

So really Bourbon never had a true offensive series in the 4th quarter, I agree with Thrillex and tomcat, maybe they wanted to work on some things, the starters haven't been in on a alot of 2nd halfs, or have needed to run a 2 minute drill.

What's wrong with running a hurry offense, it's not like last years game went into over time because of a last minute drive or anything...anything could happen
#26
I have to ask this question: Who calls the plays for Bourbon County? The players or the coaches? Up by 20 with a minute left, you should never throw a pass. I do not say that because of running the score up, I say that because you should want to get your players off the field and end the game. DO NOT RISK INJURY. Trust me, do that enough to a team and they go against better judgment and retaliate.

Thats why we play the game!!! how can you judge a program by how their fans react, Coaches cant control that and coach the game to, how do you tell kids that have worked their tails off you cant score with a 1:30 on the clock (thats even if they were trying to score) against the team that came to your place last year and beat you by 1 and knocked you out of being the district champs, sounds like a few need cheese to go with that wine.. Defense has to keep the other team from scoring at the end of the day, hopefully these 2 teams meet up again in the playoffs the way this thread is going this may turn out to be the game of the year for some... GOOD LUCK to both teams and your Coaches...

It is an unwritten rule that you do not try and show up the other team when you handidly have them beat. It is a class issue. I am more concerned with what I saw in game film. During the final INT, #33 for Bourbon got his clock cleaned, he got up and pursued the play. The player for Garrard that hit him then got hit pretty good. As that player hit the ground, #33 looked to kick him as he jumped over him. There was a penalty on that play. Was it for that or because #33 chased the play without his helment. I know that is a new rule in college. Does that rule apply in high school? We have had seen a lot of unsportsman like conduct from him in the past. I hope he didn't do that. He is a very good football player. He just needs to chill a little.

Agree 100% blitz. Know this, I really don't think this coaching staff was trying to run it up.
As far as #33. Plain and simple he has not learned how to chill, or should I say take his lumps as he receives them without trying to retaliate. Not sure he ever will, he is Junior and has not changed for the better so far.

I was at this game and I must say it was a very good game. Both teams played very hard and it was obvious that Garrard Co. was well prepared for Bourbon, I think Bourbon just outlasted them in the 2nd half and came up with some big plays.

As for the other issues - I stood in the endzone closest to the lockerrooms after the game and as the teams were leaving the field. The parents I saw and heard were all telling the GC players how well they played, and that this was the hardest game Bourbon has had so far, great game, those types of comments. In the 20-30 minutes I was standing there I never heard any insults or taunting. I cannot comment on the incident with the Lion, other than that didn't happen while we were there. I would hope that if there were a few "bad apples" that would not take away from a hard fought game on both teams part.
