The Covington Catholic defense helped its offense shake off a turnover-prone start, and then the Colonels proceeded to score 27 points over a seven-minute stretch of the first half to comfortably put away rival Beechwood.
CovCath senior quarterback Blake Bir bounced back from throwing interceptions on his first two passes of the game to throw three touchdown passes and the Colonels defense almost pitched their fourth shutout of the season in a 41-6 win over Beechwood on Friday night at Edgar McNabb Field in Ft. Mitchell.
It’s the fourth straight win in the annual series for CovCath (4-1), which didn’t allow a point in the first 15 quarters against its first four Kentucky opponents before Beechwood averted the shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Beechwood (1-3) had two great scoring chances early in the game. Sophomore Jack Talley intercepted Bir on the first play of the game and returned it to the CovCath 40, and then two plays after Beechwood fumbled it back to CovCath, junior Max Shover intercepted a pass that went through the hands of junior receiver Evan Braun to give Beechwood the ball at its own 47. The Tigers drove to the CovCath 29 after that, but turned it over on downs.
Bir then tossed first-quarter touchdown passes of 66 yards and 36 yards to Evans a little less than three minutes apart on back-to-back possessions, and CovCath was off and running.
“We thought some goofy stuff might happen,” said CovCath coach Dave With. “We certainly didn’t plan on the picks, but we preached all week to expect the unexpected, including if they have a short field - how do we respond? And they responded.
“We put the ball in the air a lot and you play good football teams those things are going to happen. As a quarterback in our system it’s just falling off a horse, you have to get back on and start having at it.”
Bir, who had thrown just four interceptions in 126 attempts in the first four games, said it’s nice to have a defense capable of picking him up.
“They’ve been solid all year and I knew they would pick me up,” said Bir, who finished 8 of 17 for 193 yards, including going 6 of 12 for 150 yards in the first half, and has now thrown 17 touchdown passes on the season. “I was happy with how I responded to it. I’m not happy when I throw one, but you can’t dwell on the past - that doesn’t help you at all.”
The CovCath defense, which has now allowed just two touchdowns to an opposing offense all season, was not only stout once again, it also got in on the scoring when junior Matthew Way returned a first-quarter interception of a Cameron Lane pass 49 yards for a touchdown two plays after Bir had connected with Evans on the 36-yard scoring pass.
CovCath upped the lead to 27-0 when Ethan Egbers swept left end for a four-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal just 1:23 into the second quarter. Egbers also caught a 33-yard TD pass on CovCath’s first possession of the third quarter.
Beechwood was able to run the final 10:27 of the first half off the clock as it put together a 17-play drive that started at its own 20 and featured a 14-yard run by senior Max Nussbaum on a fake punt from the 50, but the drive stalled at the CovCath 24.
The Tigers also controlled the ball for 9:33 of the third quarter but couldn’t score in the period.
Beechwood actually ran 64 plays to just 33 for CovCath, but was outgained 252-174. The Tigers were held to 92 yards rushing on 45 attempts.
They averted the shutout when backup quartetback Justin Suchanek, who entered the game late in the third quarter when Lane was injured, passed 18 yards to Devon Everett with 9:19 remaining in the game.
“It was frustrating that they controlled the ball that much,” said Wirth. “They brought in a backup QB and it was a complete change of pace and they’re scrappy and athletic, but I think it’s good for us, because we have to learn how to handle that. We’re not going through the season flawless and next week we’re playing a good offensive team (in Class 4A rival Highlands). It was good for us to experience that and we’ll certainly learn from it.”http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll...309140111/
