Name your favorite game where a team had to make a big comeback to pull out a victory. This can be one you played in, a game involving your favorite team, any game you saw, etc.

2004 Ashland vs Rockcastle. Best one i can remember Rock dominated the first half. With Ashland coming back in the second half. This game was after many consecutive playoff losses to rockcastle.

I remember that game very well.....I was a sophomore, for quite a few years a double OT playoff game stood. The next year however, different story @ Putnam advancing in victory 32-14 in 2005! My favorite would have to be Coach Tom Larkey's 200th victory @Lincoln Co., score was 13-12 in the late 4th Qtr. the ball was kicked to us after the Patriots late score, media left already calling it a Patriots victory. QB Matt Burkhart was out of the game due to injury....we moved the ball up field and w/ one last play being a halfback pass...Sr. WR Derreck Hurst potrayed the QB spot....ball snapped, sweeps to Trent Jones and he throws a 45-50ish yard hailmary in the endzone and as time expired as the ball was in the air, So. WR Shawn Childress over 2 defenders catches the ball sealing the ROCK's victory 18-13.

The Hazard hailmary at PCC in 2008.. The game shows you play to the end and great things can and may come. Hazard was in defeat but defense and stupidy costed PCC the game.

2008 Bell vs. Knox in the playoffs. I can't remember the actual score at the time in the 4th quarter, Knox had went ahead of Bell with about 4 mins to go in the game. Bell has the ball on about the 25 yard line with 75 yards to go for a touchdown. Zachery throws a pass and the receiver goes 73 yards to the 2 yard line........Great game in the playoffs at Log Mountain.
09-12-2012, 08:44 PM
97 Newport @ Lawrence County in the playoffs. Newport dominated the first half. Lawrence County put the ball in the hands of their FB Charlie Vinson in the 2nd half and he carried them to a win.
09-12-2012, 09:47 PM
Evarts vs Pikeville regional final @ Pikeville in 1990. EHS had dominated the game against PHS and the refs. PHS finally went up 7-0. EHS scored with less than a minute left. Russell came out limping after music called time out. Russell snuck back in, EHS went for 2 and got it. Russell over the top! What a game in the poring rain!!!

Harlan County down 14-0 with 2:14 to go vs. Perry Central in 2009. TJ Green puts the team on his back with two TD runs and fumble recovery in that short amount of time to bring HC back.

Yeah I remember the 2005 game for a injury our qb suffered in the game right before the half his elbow was destroyed. He could barely move his arm. Not making excuses as Rock was in control even when he was healthy. Just how gruesome it was. I know you wouldve wanted to win in 2004 but Atleast you got to be a part of one the greatest games in one of the most historic stadiums anywhere. That is pretty special. And as much as the people of Ashland love that stadium. It wouldn't have the same mystique if it wasn't for the quality opponents like rockcastle that have played there as well.

hate to say it but the best come back in ky history is:
1997 cov cath @ highlands in the 3rd round of the playoffs. dubbed the "mud bowl".
22-0 highlands at half time. then a heavy storm rolled in...
cov cath wins in double OT. goes on to win state.
the only way to tell who was who on the field was the helmets, the field was pure slop.

Boyle County vs. Lone Oak in the 2009 State Championship game. Boyle County wins 42-39 in two overtimes.
Boyle County overcomes a 16 point deficit going into the 4th quarter. Scores 35 points in the 2nd half including both overtimes. Boyle County wins the game on a QB sneak by Goldsmith on a 4th and goal from the 1 yard-line of Lone Oak. Personally, the greatest game I had ever watched, considering fans were leaving the game in the middle of the 3rd quarter.

My favorite is our 15-10 state semifinal victory over Bell in 2004. We had something like 90 yards of offense in that game lol. Bell came to play, that Robbins kid they had was a threat to score any time he touched the ball.

In Kentucky:
1997 Mud Bowl between CovCath and Highlands
2006 1A State Finals between NewCath and Danville
2007 4A State Finals between St. X and Trinity
Best one I saw in person was an Ohio playoff game between Elder and Centerville in 1999. Centerville had AJ Hawk, Mike Nugent and was ranked 4th in Ohio. Elder was up 28-14 at halftime. Centerville scored 28 straight to take a 42-28 lead with 4 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. Elder came back to tie the game with 44 seconds left. Elder won it on a 40 yard pick 6 with 30 seconds left.
The year before, Centerville lost to Colerain by 1 in the playoffs after they failed to get the 2 point conversion with 20 seconds to go in the game.

Great answer. Greatest game I have ever been at. The Bell County game the week before was the second greatest game I have been at.
I though Boone got in on 3rd and goal myself.
Phillip Barsotti will forever be remembered. For a kid who had kicked 2 or 3 field goals all season the kick against Bell to win was actually topped by the field goal to tie the Lone Oak game as the play clock expired. Just an amazing game. Barsotti doesn't have stones he has boulders.

You mean Bell County's 1-0 victory, I'm not sure where you're getting this 15-10 stuff at nicker:. That was a great game, Mitchell I believe had both TD's for Highlands, fumble recovery and broke a run loose in the 4th, believe he actually scored the 2 pt conversion to. Kid was phenomenal. Robbins was hands down the best back Bell County has ever had as far as his on the field contributions go.
My favorite comeback game ever was Bell vs. Rockcastle in '05. Rock got the lead on us to the tune of 26-0, 29-0, I'm not sure, in the first half. Then the second half behind the arm of Kyle Nelson, a HUGE pass play to Stephen Hunter, and a QB sneak as the clock hit 0:00, Bell pulled out a 33-29 win. If I'm not mistaken, Kyle passed for over 250+ yards in the Madison Southern game before, and the Rock game. 250+ by a Bell QB in two consecutive games :insane:

Actually it's back to a 15-10 victory again. You all did have a 1-0 victory for a few years though lol. I'll admit Bell was the better team that night. If you have any connection to the AD at your school please encourage him/her to schedule a game with us again. After that, we should play again. And we need to replace western and mason with quality teams haha.

Some Pikeville games:
-2004 Pikeville vs. Williamsburg- The Panthers drive and score with under a minute left and get the 2-Pt Conversion to tie the game at 22 thanks to a couple of miraculous catches, and ultimately win in OT for the Class A Region IV Championship.
-2011 Pikeville @ Fairview- Another Regional Championship game. The Panthers fell behind 18-0 midway through the 2nd quarter. The defense finally settled in and behind a few big plays, the Panthers took a 20-18 lead in the 4th quarter. With under 20 seconds, Fairview had driven to around the Panther 25 and Gavin Miller sealed the game with an INT.
-2005 Pikeville vs. Paintsville- Paintsville took a 14-0 lead into halftime. But the injury to Doderer (I think) crippled the Tiger O and Pikeville mounted the comeback for the win, 20-14.
-1988 Pikeville vs. Harrodsburg- The Panthers trailed at halftime of the 1988 Class A State Championship Game 10-0 to the Pioneers. However, the opening kickoff of the 2nd half was fumbled by HHS and picked up by Pikeville Kicker, Mike McCoy, and taken in for the TD. The Panthers would not look back en route to a 28-10 win and a 2nd State Champiosnhip.
-1999 Pikeville @ Beechwood- Probably one of the toughest defeats in Pikeville High School history. The Panthers took a 19-10 lead in the 4th quarter with 6:36 left on a 1-yd plunge by Jarrod Frasure on the road in Ft. Mitchell and looked primed for a shot at the school's 4th state title. But Beechwood would drive down and score. The Tiger defense forced a 3 & Out and the Offense benefited off of two wounded ducks that just landed perfectly in receiver's hands for another Tiger TD drive. Beechwood would go on to thump Hancock County 45-22 in the State Championship game.

Last Friday night Magoffin County rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat West Carter after trailing 20-2 at halftime. Should have beat them with no problems though. We drove the ball down the field three times in the first half and got no points from any of them. Was an excellent game by the Hornets in the second half though.

By one point.
Very similar to the Lone Oak - Boyle game. Leading team melts as winners storm from behind to take it.
If I recall the New Cath game correctly the Breds won late but it wasn't at the last second like Boyle did in tying their game and forcing OT. Can you recall?

The Perry and Lawrence game last week was as good as any.
Perry had a Punt Return, Fumble recovery on 4th down, and a hail mary in the final 3 minutes of play to win 50-49
The game against Clay County a few years ago was also big. I think there might have been even more points scored in that one than the Lawrence County game

NCC scored on a 50 yard screen with i think a minute to go
09-13-2012, 06:57 PM
Storm was there before half. Was not bothering HHS at all as they were scoring at will. Then came halftime. Cov Cath went to the corner of the field at halftime and was more than likely discussing ways to prevent HHS from putting up 100 points. HHS came out of their locker room after halftime in clean, dry uniforms. HHS kept passing the ball and CCH took advantage of several HHS mistakes to steal the victory. Agree this game has to be one of, if not the best comeback game featuring two very good teams.
