Final from Somerset.
Defensive battle in this one, both teams had trouble getting any offense going against the other team's D.

Phooey! I thought Hazard would steal this one. Sounds like they had a shot.

A lot better played game than last years game. Somerset's D was the difference. Both teams made unforced errors and both teams forced errors on the other. Hazard WR's are very fast and strong, I think teams will have trouble with Hazard the rest of the way if they continue to improve with line play.

Got this one right! Congrats, SHS!

nice win for Somerset, that defense looks like a brick wall

That was a good grind it out win for Somerset. Still work to do with offensive scheme but showing promise. A few breakout plays were great.
I think one of the unsung heroes of Somerset is Tyler megargle. How many potential touchdowns did he swat out of the air? 5, 6 maybe more. He is a fantastic safety.

Sounded like a bunch of break ups on the radio for Megargel. I wasn't there but it sounded like the pass interference call on him late was very iffy. Heard that Patrick Williams played good D on Olinger in the second half also. That was huge for us that we were able to hold them to a FG before the half too, momentum was shifting a little bit. This defensive unit is getting better every week. I was little worried about the pass defense coming into tonight but they settled down in the second half and came up huge in the fourth quarter.

Big Suprise here!!! Congrats JUMPERS!!!!

Hazard will be hard to beat later in the season. A this loss only will help them like it did last year, they will be back in the state finals this year because their schedule will help them grow as a team.

Somersets defense played excellent. Hazard couldnt really give Whitaker time to throw when he did he was under pressure or threw it too low. Defense is definately these two teams strong points and you know that Defense wins championships and offense puts people in the stand. Both teams did outstanding and Hazard has nothing to hang there heads about as they give Somerset all they wanted and more. Hazard will be working hard to line play im sure and those kids will get better as the season goes along and i expect them to be back in BG again... (unless major injuries occur).

#2 Jumpers down #2 Hazard, 17-9

Somerset — The Somerset Briar Jumpers held on to an early lead to beat the defending 1A State Champion Hazard Bulldogs 17-9 in the Briar Patch last night.
What began as a potential second blowout in a row turned into a game either team could have won, as the Bulldogs pinned back their ears and played the kind of football everyone expected them to. It was not until the final seconds that the outcome was assured for Somerset.
Last year's match between Somerset and Hazard was a fumblefest.
Hazard seemed to blame itself for its own loss, giving up its fumbles in the red zone. They vowed it wouldn't happen again. It did, anyway.
Hazard gave up its first fumble with 7:10 to go in the first quarter. Braiden Mcwilliams took the ball away from quarterback Evan Whitaker. Less than a minute later, Somerset returned the favor. Three plays and less than 45 seconds after that, Hazard put the ball on the ground again. It was a fumble hokey pokey. Somerset had only run two offensive plays up to that point. It needed only one more as Junior running back Will Lange picked up where he left off last week by scampering 39 yards into the end zone for the Briar Jumpers' first touchdown.
The very next set of downs, after Somerset kicked off to Hazard, the Bulldogs went three and out --- way out, as Cam Cheuvront returned the punt 63 yards for the second Briar Jumper TD of the night.
After the Dobbs kicks, Somerset was up 14-0.
That is the way the score stood until late in the second quarter. Hazard, which had been ineffective all night on the ground, seemed to come to the understanding that it had to throw the pass to stay alive.
Bulldog Senior Quarterback Evan Whitaker (who completed 15 of 30 passes for 196 yards on the night) showed he understood that fact by connecting on back-to-back passes, first to sophomore running back Brandon Jones, and then to senior wide receiver Nathan Higgs, who turned on the afterburners for the 59 yard touchdown. Most of that was yards after the catch.
With 2:49 left in the half, Hazard got the ball back after a Somerset fumble on the return. The Bulldogs thanked their hosts for that gift by holding on to score the last points of the first half: a 23 yard field goal off the toe of junior kicker Kevin Eversole with just .9 seconds left on the clock.
At the half, the score was Somerset 14, Hazard 9.
Both teams settled down in the second half, with Somerset
taking the onside kick and grinding out 16 plays and nearly 8 minutes of the clock for what became the last score of the game, a 23-yard field goal from sophomore kicker, Chandler Dobbs.
For the rest of the game, two very good and very powerful teams attacked each other defensively and held on to what they had. For both teams, the remainder of the 3rd quarter and entire 4th quarter was a battle of the defenses featuring Somerset senior defensive back Tyler Megargel knocking down long passes from Whitaker a total of 6 times. Two of those plays resulted in defensive pass interference calls, but when the dust had cleared, Somerset came away with the victory.
Somerset Coach Robbie Lucas was pleased at his team’s play.
“It wasn’t pretty, and it was almost a mirror of last year’s game,” he said. “There were a lot of penalties, and a lot of turnovers on both sides.”
“It was a very good football team we beat tonight,” he continued. “I said earlier I fully expect them to take the 1A state title again. They’ve got kids that you just can’t match up with. The quarter can throw and the running back is a hoss cat. We were very fortunate to come away with a victory.”
Lucas had high praise for Megargel.
“I’m as guilty as anybody. I never give Tyler credit. The only reason is that he is such a good kid that you never know he’s around. He makes every play we ask him to make. He comes to practice every day and he works his tail off. I think he is in the mode of a Tyler ford we had a few years ago. I think he is an excellent player and I think you are just starting to see the beginning of Tyler.
The Bulldogs nearly pulled off consecutive wins after trailing at the half. Two weeks ago, they trailed Clintwood, Va., and ended up winning by a 23-17 margin.
I was thinking about that when we went into the locker room at the half,” Lucas said. “Hazard is a very good team. We are very fortunate to win. They have an excellent coaching staff, classy kids, and I know we won’t always come out the victor when we play them.”
But the Briar Jumpers needed this kind of game as the rest of the season materializes. Next week, they take on Breathitt County (4-0), who defeated Jackson County last night 36-14. After that, they take on Glasgow, then Whitley County before entering district play against a very good Danville team.
“We have our work cut out for us,” Lucas said. “We have a lot of work to do and a lot of good teams ahead of us. We need to continue to get better.”

I hope so. It would be nice to see Hazard, Somerset, and Belfry playing for state titles. It would also be nice to see a mountain 5A school make it.
Dont really think a 4A team has a shot with it being so stacked in the east.

Not so much of being down, just new. As in new lines on both sides of the ball, new MLB, and new RB. Hazard knew the O and D lines were going to take some time, just hoping they get better every week. This was only the second game of the year for Hazard. I personally think the team will be ready to make a another run deep into the playoffs.
Somerset is a good team. Dawgs were right there with chances to win the game.

Think what you want, Hazard will give most teams problems matching up with their skilled people. Good luck when you get a little Bull Dog by the tail.
