Jackets sting another Top 10 6A Team.
I think it is safe to say they are clearly in the discussion as one of the Top 5 overall teams in the State of Kentucky.

Couple scores called back as well for Central. Coulda been a lot worse , but Ballard is pretty good , & they have a mammoth OT Joey bloomfield 6'6" 303, but the jackets are well balanced in just about all three phases of the game.

Central seems to have become dominant over the last few years.
I dont understand how some of these 6A schools with 2000+ kids can be so bad, and the ones that are good lose to smaller competetion week in and week out.
Now, im obviously not knowledgable on Lville high school football, but why is it so hard to get some kids out for football? I know there has to be some great athletes in those schools, or do they all leave to attend a ST X or Trinity?
And, Central IMO will once again win 3A. This year they might cake walk threw it....JMO

Id like to see a Central/Highlands game.

I think Central could possibly get them this year. Wish they were in same class.

Highlands and Central played a few times. It was a quality game a couple of times. Central hasn't had a team that was capable of beating Highlands yet.
09-08-2012, 01:40 AM
Since were talking past tense central had some teams in the mid 90's that could've beaten them i think, they bested trinity 3 times in a 4 year span 94-97, but that's when there were 4 classes & Highlands was 3A, Central was 4A albeit playing with a 3A student population. Central has about 250-300 boys in the school but they have a total of 120 in the football program. Central does have the benefit of open enrollment. However racial guidelines keep their student population to 3A level as they have the limit of African Americans allowable . In order for central to move up to 6A more White & (other) would have to apply to the school , which offers majors in business , medicine , Law , & Vetinary sciences , with a fine academic reputation & high college acceptance percentage.

I don't mean this in any negative way AT ALL. I mean that.
But, do you think those educational programs help the school get some athletes from the city?

Central is a magnet school. From what I understand, anyone in Jefferson County can attend and they offer several college readiness programs. Also, I've been told by a kid who used to attend (this could be total BS) you have to write an essay along with several other things to be accepted into Central, as they can allow so many african americans, etc. as Coachdad said. He probably knows more.
Central is LEGITIMATE. Will Belfry, Bell County, and Breathitt among others play their ass off and try to knock them off? Lord yeah, but will they? Time will tell.

One thing that Central's 19-14 football victory at Ballard proved Friday night was that the Yellowjackets have more than one outstanding running back.
Darren Powell, a 5-foot-6, 172-pound junior fullback, took most of the running chores in the second half after senior Derius Cox suffered a slight concussion early in the third quarter. Powell finished the game with 164 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns as the two-time defending state Class 3-A champions improved to 4-0.
Cox rushed for 119 yards on 19 carries in the first half and scored Central's first TD on a 5-yard run to cap a nine-play, 80-yard drive following the opening kickoff. He ran twice for 4 yards in the second half. He averaged 196.7 yards in his first three games.
"Powell ran well," Central coach Ty Scroggins said. "He's strong, quick and compact. Ballard made some great adjustments in the second half. They put an extra guy in the box so we had to move Powell to tailback.''
Powell gained 85 yards on 10 carries in the first half.
"Those (164) yards are the most I've ever had in a game,'' he said. "When Coach calls my number, I do what I have to do for the team. But first, I have to thank my linemen.''
Central dominated play early, driving 65 yards in 15 plays, with Powell scoring from 9 yards out to make it 13-0 with 11:54 left in the second quarter. Cox contributed a 20-yard run in that drive, with Powell -- who mainly ran up the middle -- adding an 11-yard gain on the next play.
Ballard countered when Dontez Byrd returned the kickoff 54 yards to the Central 21. Two plays later, quarterback Tyler Owen hit Will Bush on an 8-yard pass. Owen completely fooled the Central defense by rolling left 6 yards for a TD with 10:12 left in the first half to make it 13-7.
Byrd also caught a 61-yard pass from Owen in the third quarter.
"Byrd has had a big year,'' Ballard coach Mike Jackson said. "He's turned into an offensive threat.''
Central went ahead 19-7 on a 10-play, 54-yard drive highlighted by runs of 22 and 12 yards by Cox. Powell ran the final two yards for a 19-7 lead with 1:02 remaining before halftime.
Ballard (2-2) threw a scare into Central midway through the fourth quarter. Owen passed 13 yards to Cam Lewis and teamed with DeShawn Doss for a 37-yard pass to the Yellowjackets' 21. Bennie Berry ran for a score on the next play to cut the Bruins' deficit to 19-14 with 5:40 to play.

Central--Deris Cox 5 run (kick good); Central--Darren Powell 9 run (kick failed); Ballard--Tyler Owen 6 run (Andrew Fantini kick); Central--Powell 2 run (run failed); Ballard--Bennie Berry 21 run (Fantini kick).

Thank 0304, Ive never fully understood the whole magnet school deal.
This is why i like to be educated on this stuff, from several post on Central that i have read people have referred to them on some occasions as a very poor schools, something like Bryan Station, mostly african american, and struggling academically, when thats not the case at all. Its also the reason i dont judge schools i know nothing about.
I go to Lvill sometimes for work, what part of lville is it located in? From the sounds here last year, it sounded like it was down in a rough part of town, or as some refered to, the "ghetto". I can get around lville fairly easily, but i have no clue where any of the lville schools are located in the town. Trinity, St.X, Male, Manual, PRP? I have no clue.

Central is just to the West of Downtown off Broadway if I remember correctly from when I lived there. Not the best area, but also not the worst part of Louisville. The West End of Louisville can get really rough, as can some of the "Whiskey Tango" areas down off Dixie Hwy as you approach 264.
St. X is off Poplar Level Rd close to the zoo. Pretty nice area.
Trinity is off Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews. Decent distance from the city center. St. Matthews was my favorite part of Louiville when I lived there with the Highlands area and it was very clean and safe. Ballard is in the "nicest" part of town around Anchorage. Lots of money around there, very nice school.
Male is right off Preston hwy right next to I-65. It is essentially on the opposite isde of the Interstate from the Airport.
Manual is literally just North of UL's campus (I think you can see UL buildings across the street from the campus) It is South of Downtown essentially at the start of Old Louisville. Extremely revered educational establishment, also very well known for lots of alumni who have been successful in their fields of performing arts and music.
PRP I don't know for sure, I just know it is in the community of Pleasure Ridge Park which is South of 264 and North of the Gene Snyder XPWY. I dated a girl in college who went to PRP and though it's not the nicest part of the city, it is safe and pretty normal.

Don't know about the other schools in Lville that much, but when i worked there i stayed at St. Matthews on the eastern part of town, and would watch Trinity practice football during the eve.Looked like a small college team at the time.

The rest i could find pretty easily.
What school would be close to St Dennis or Shively and that part of town? I believe PRP and Iroquois would be around that area maybe?

Butler, if memory serves me, is the closest one to that part of town as Shively is just North of 264. Once you cross over 264 on Taylor you are in the Iroqouis area I believe.
PRP is in the general area, but it is further South on Dixie Hwy

Gave me a nice trip down memory lane reminiscing on my time navigating that city.
No offense intended whatsoever to our Louisville posters, but for me personally I couldn't wait to move from there. Not my cup of tea. Did have some great times there as I was fresh out of college making real money for the first time.
To clarify my disdain for the City of Louisville had zero to do with fear of crime or a general lack of safety. In general the mindset of the city is that they are a "big" city when in actuality it is not. It also lacks an identity as it is like the city never could decide if it wanted to be a Southern City or a Midwestern River City. The other reason I didn't care much for it is because St. Louis is probably my least favorite major city, and Louisville is essentially the smaller version of St. Louis.
I digress though.

I can agree with that one.
I can only handle 3 or 4 days there tops.
I think Lville is in the top 20 in the country as far as population goes, but as you said, the town itself is pretty small, for stuff to do anyways.
Ive always loved Knoxville as a smaller city, mostly due to the fact that i can navigate through it as easy as i do Corbin, i dont care much for lex either.
