Warriors roll to 28-21 win over Marion County

Somerset — Southwestern may be a young team, but they certainly didn’t play like one in the closing minutes of last night’s contest at the Reservation.

Despite experience in late-game situations, the ‘Young Guns’ of Southwestern were able to put together a game-winning drive, pushing them to a 28-21 victory over the Knights of Marion County.

The Warriors, after a touchdown from Marion County, needed a score to pull out in front of the Knights - and that’s exactly what they got, thanks to the arm of sophomore Austin Smiddy and the legs of senior Logan Campisano.

After having a run called back, Campisano came up with a huge 23-yard run, setting the Warriors up with good field position inside the red zone. Smiddy took control from there, tossing a ball above the Knight defense and right into the hands of junior Devon Baker for an 18-yard touchdown strike with 30 seconds left.

The Knights would fumble the ball away on their attempt to match Southwestern, clinching the victory for Southwestern, allowing them to move to 2-1 on the season and the much-needed confidence after their previous outing against Somerset.

Andy Stephens, who is in his second season as the Southwestern head coach, couldn’t have scripted a better ending for his team than the one last night.

“We looked at the fade earlier in the drive - it was there, we just overthrew it,” stated Stephens. “Devon (Baker) made a nice catch on a nice throw from (Austin) Smiddy. Hopefully, it’s a maturing drive for us. We had young guys making plays for us, so hopefully our guys will become more comfortable and continue to make big plays like that.”

“It was a nice drive, as well as a great opportunity to win a game at home. You don’t ever want to lose a game at home, so it was really nice for us. It was a good fight, and a little ugly, but we’ll take it. We’re excited about winning - we’re 2-1 now. We are getting better each week and getting things ready for district.

Smiddy, who fumbled the ball on the Warriors’ previous drive, which led to a Marion County touchdown, was down on himself after the turnover, but with the help of his team, gained the much-needed confidence to lead the ‘Blue and Orange’ down the field for a game-winning touchdown drive.

“I’m not going to lie, after that fumble, I was really down,” stated Smiddy, in only his third game under center for Southwestern. “To be honest, I thought we were done for, but my teammates picked me up and I just went out there and threw the ball up to Devon (Baker), who made a great play.”

Campisano, who finished with three scores on the night, put the Warriors on the board early, scoring on a run from five yards out with 8:52 left in the opening period. The Knights would respond in a big way, as on the ensuing kick-off, Cameron Brown took a 90-yard kick return to the house, allowing Marion County to jump out to a one-point, 7-6 advantage.

Both squads would put points up on the board in the final 51 seconds of the second stanza, meaning both Marion County and Southwestern would go into the halftime break with the score knotted up at 14 apiece. The Warriors’ score came on a 23-yard run from Campisano, while Jalen Powell scampered down the field for an 85-yard touchdown run.

Campisano would tally his third and final touchdown of the night with just above two minutes left in the third quarter. Baker converted on the PAT attempt, putting the ‘Blue and Orange’ ahead by seven points at 21-14 with 2:05 left.

The Knights tied the game up once again late in the fourth period of action, as Hayden Taylor tossed a touchdown pass to Vincent Collins on fourth and goal. Marion County, who took advantage of a Warrior fumble, notched the score up at 21 apiece with 1:43 remaining in regulation.

One downside in the Warrior victory was the amount of penalties they had, which is something the ‘Blue and Orange’ cannot do in the future, according to Stephens.

“We killed ourselves in a lot of drives,” explained the Warrior coach. “We had holds, false starts, and a lot of other penalties - we had 11 penalties on the offensive side of the ball. It’s hard to make those yards up, especially when it’s happening over and over. It’s just those little mental things that we’ve got to improve on.”

Southwestern finished the contest with 347 total offensive yards, with 291 of those yards coming on the ground. The Knights, who fell to 0-4 on the year with the loss to Southwestern for the second straight season, had 278 total yards (175 rushing and 103 passing).

Smiddy went 4 of 9 in the air for 56 yards and one touchdown, which was the game-winning pass to Baker, who finished with that one catch for 18 yards. Smiddy, on the ground, came up with 51 yards on 14 carries.

Campisano, who carried the ball on 20 occasions, finished with 148 yards and three touchdowns -- both game highs -- on the ground. Senior Jordan Maggard had 64 yards on 13 attempts.

Defensively, senior Elijah Tarter had two fumble recoveries and junior Jesse Meece had an interception.

Southwestern will return to action next Friday evening, traveling to Danville to face the Admirals at Admiral Stadium.
