Ashland 47 - Russell 7
#1
final:yikes:

Had Ashland hung on to the ball this could've been 80-0

You're right Ashland dominated in all aspects.
#4
They said Russell had only 4 first downs an only 106 yards total offense. Most of that was the JV in garbage time.
#5
Dominating performance by the kittens. That defense is special.
#6
I have to say, I expected Ashland to win, but I didn't expect this. What's up? Is Russell really this bad? I've read about it being bad conditioning, I've read that it's a lack of discipline. What's going on?
#7
Really expected more offense from russell. I actually thought there defense played fairly well. For the situation they were put in.

Yea, with the addition of the Evans kid, I really thought Russell would be able to open the offense up a bit more. Granted, Ashland does have a great defense this year.

Ashands defense was the story of the game. Russell kept it close for a half but when every possession is a 3 and out you are in trouble.

Ashand played pissed off and just whipped the Russell offensive line.

Yeah IDK what happened between this week and last but the offense went way backwards.
#12
Ashland was just in the Russell backfield as soon as the ball was snapped every play. I have to think if Lance Evans had some blocking he is able to get the the Russell offense rolling a little more than it did.

I usually just read the posts on here but tonight I have to post. Ashland has a very good team and a real good defence.I have been around the program along time and the play calling in the first half was the worst I have seen. When you have a weapon like the Evans kid you gotta give him.a chance to do his thing. When we spreaded the field against Ironton.we had some success I know our way of doing things is to run the traps but its hard when there is 11 guys in the box.I still think the devils will be fine and go 8-2 or maybe 7-3.Make no mistake the 2 teams they have played the last 2 weeks are very very good football teams.I just think right t now our best option is to spread the field.

I agree. Sums it up pretty good.

Russell had no answer for OBryan and that defense.

Russell was very effective when they spread out Ironton created a lot of room for huffine to run and Evans to throw. That is The Ashland formula for Ironton. Idk if it would work against Ashland or not but it couldn't have been worse than 106 yards total offense

I think Russells lack of offense story was the story. Ashland may have a good defense but the lack of game planning was absolutely terrible. These coaches never gave the players a chance. Of coarse this is nothing new when Russell plays a better team. Sure Ashland was the better team but not by this wide of margin. I won't go into specific strategy, but those of you that know the game know theres ways to slow a rush. Russell will be fine now that they play one of the easiest schedules in the state. Ivan Can go ahead and add another seven or eight wins that will take no coaching or game playing, just told a team and go through the motions

I don't understand the decision to keep running the counter trap into the strength of ashlands defense. Johnson and Ellis nullified the guards and cEnter while Obryan, justice, swift and Johnson closed and tackled. Time and time again Russell ran the play without any success. In all seriousness, the first team likely had negative rushing yards. Ashlands defense really does do a nice job. I still think conditioning is an issue for Russell. The Russell players battled hard and gave great effort but were totally gassed by the third quarter. On a sour note ashlands starting center, Drew Walters, hurt his leg. Hope he makes a speedy recovery and can get back on the field this year. He is an excellent player. Johnson filled in for him and did an admirable job. Wish the devils luck the rest of the year.

Looks like Walters is out for about 6 weeks with fractured foot. That's a turf kid to lose he has been so consistent for the last 3 yrs great player an hope to have him back by playoff time??.

I don't think Russell could've opened up there offense anymore Evans didn't have any time to throw the ball short let alone the deep ball. Russell will recover an probably end up with 6 or 7 wins an a playoff spot.

I still think Russell wins out in the regular season before falling in the 2nd or third round of playoffs. Only other game they may lose is Raceland. My question to you Russell fans is what do you think this means for Ashlands chances next week at tank stadium? Having seen both teams now?
#21
How did Ashland move the ball? I heard mention of 3 and outs. Did Ashland's offense have short fields all night?
#22
Ashland moved the ball at wil. Over 600 total yards. And over 500 on the ground. 4 turnovers is what kept this thing within 40 points. If Ashland scores td's on all those possessions it's a 75-7 game. I dont remember Ashland punting all night long.

Ironton must be slow on defense. There was no time to pass against this D, Evans is a pocket passer once he's flushed out of the pocket its over hes not a scrambling. Qb. An he was under constant pressure from the start.

How good is Ironton really?
#24
Wow. Sad

Belfry will give their best! But sheesh. Are Ashland fans daring to think this could be the year they actually get past a Cov. Cath and compete with the Birds?

Offensively they are very good and big. You are correct they don't have the overall team speed as Ashland but will have a significant size advantage. Huge O-line with rb Lewis and the qb Duty both really fast kids. But defensively they can be had if u get them moving side to side in the passing game and quick hits in the run game. It should be a good one

Ask again after the 14th that's our answer. It was a nice win but were not making any guarantees. JC is to good to overlook in our own district. Then we have to earn this matchups. But we will know a lot more after the Ironton Game.

I know we punted at least once late in 1st quarter. How many touches did #3 Jeremy Jackson get tonight I know he scored his first td tonight about 25 yarder. Kids got wicked speed. I missed part of 2nd an 3rd quarters.

I believe that was his only carry. Completely trucked a kid to. A loud thud. Coach hart sai after the game they plan on using him as a hb to spell quinton(who was sensational tonight)as well as fb to add depth at both positions but he is still getting up to speed. Something tells me he didn't want Ironton having to much tape on the kid. I bet he gets unleashed next week

That's kinda what I thought as well. I talked to him this afternoon an he said they told him to be ready to get some reps at hb. Maybe some defense to at safety or corner even just to get some fresh legs in there he is multi talented. He will definitely make this team better.
