We will be posting the rankings this weekend after the first round of games, seeing as to how preseason rankings are useless, as shown by so many newspapers around the state on a yearly basis.
Nows a good time to state your teams case.
Let us know what your team does/doesnt have coming into this year.
Remember, this first week will have some impact on the rankings, but it never hurts to get the discussion started early.
We should have the first BGR rankings up on Sunday.

Estill County, is a young team with only 6 seniors, well 5 seniors due to the 6th one tearing his ACL. Our kicker will also be playing defense which he didn't last year. We also have couple new players that are playing that didn't play last year. 1st game of the year will probably be the toughest game we play all year. New Offense seems to be working just fine.

Rankings mean nothing. Let the play on the field sort out the contenders from the rest!

Why should they be ranked ahead of say a Corbin, Monroe County, Wayne County, or for that matter a Pike Central?

Bell Co is a VERY EXPERIENCED team this season returning 14 starters and 22 Seniors. Bell Co will be a very balanced team this year IMO. RB's Collett and Polly will lead the way.
3A Should be
1. Central
2. Bell Co
3. Belfry
4. Breathitt Co
5. PT
Bell should be ranked above all mountain teams untill a team knocks them off.

Fair enough point, Bell definitely has a clear case for the #2 ranking and quite the impressive resume over the years. But, I'll be your Huckleberry and play along.
Breathitt returns more starter's than Bell or Belfry from a pretty good team from last year who advanced as far as Bell did. In addition to returning starter's, they added an All-State caliber player on both sides of the ball in Shouse , as well as another starter in Cox. Whereas Belfry nd Bell each lost their primary offensive producer from last season, Bretahitt returns theirs in Trent, who may very well be the best player in 3A.
Belfry returns 14 starters as well from a team who came inches away from defeating a Central team which shut Bell out and won by 3TD's. Belfry also advanced to the 3A Finals (including a victory over previously mentioned Breathitt @ Jackson) whereas Bell was unable to advance past the Round of 16.
Since the argument is about ranking Bell ahead of Belfry and Breathitt specifically. What is Bell's record head to head against Belfry and Breathitt in this span of consecutive victories against Mountain teams? Furthermore, who has the best resume on a statewide level during this run.
I will let you pick from a blind comparison. Since 2006 (when Bell lost twice to Rock):
Team A
1 State Finals, Semi-Finals 3X, Quarterfinals 5X
Team B
1 State Finals, Semi-Finals Twice, Quarter Finals 5X
Team C
3 State Finals, Semi-Finals 5X, Quarterfinals 5X
Furthermore, why limit it to just 5 years? How about we use the same 3 teams over 10 years?
Team A
1 State Finals, Semi-Finals 4X, Quarterfinals 8X
Team B
2 State Finals, Semi-Finals 2x, Quarterfinals 6X
Team C
5 State Finals, Semi-Finals 8X, Quarterfinals 9X

Grant co only lost 5 seniors last season, they have an amazing senior class along with a pretty good junior class and are returning a lot of experience on both sides of the ball! IMO i expect them to beat rockcastle if they fire on all cylinders

I'll even take this argument a couple steps further. Seeing as how during this time frame dating back to the 2006 season Bell has never played Belfry or Breathitt, I think it is more than fair to examine "who did they beat" for all teams involved.
I made a list of the quality wins of these programs during this time frame and only included household names with rich traditions, or teams who during this time have won a State Title. In other words, even though Pike Central, Sheldon Clark, Knox Central, and Lafayette have fielded some very good teams during this time frame, I am not including them:
Breathitt
Somerset
Hazard 2x
Pburg 2X
Belfry
Harlan County 2X
LCA 2X
Russell
Bell County
Middlesboro
Whitley County 6X
Corbin 2X
Harlan County 3X
Johnson Central 2X
Rockcastle County 7X
Boyle County
Belfry
Henry Clay
Ashland
Pburg 3X
Whitley County 2X
Mason County
Pikeville 6X
Somerset 2X
Russell 3X
Cov. Holy Cross
Lou. Holy Cross
Johnson Central 2X
Corbin
Newport Central Catholic
Middlesboro
To make the argument of "until they lose they are ranked ahead" when they have not played head to head would be as asinine as saying "Until Bell proves they can reach the Finals in the new 3A they cannot be ranked ahead of Belfry and Breathitt who have".
It is a mutually exclusive statement.

^^ I don't mean to butt in on your argument on who should be ranked where, but i think since the wins against these teams has been stated that the losses should be also.
Breathitt
Somerset x's 2
Hazard
Prestonsburg x's 2
Belfry x's 2
Johnson Central x's 3
Bell County
Rockcastle Co. x's 2
Boyle Co. x's 2
Belfry
Ashland x's 3
Prestonsburg x's 2
Russell
Breathitt
Johnson Central x's 3
The teams overall records against the teams you listed are as follows
Breathitt 11-10
Bell 22-4
Belfry 26-10
I can see where your going with this, but IMO past records dont mean squat for this years rankings. I just wanted everyone to see all the facts. Untill the season starts & one team proves to be ahead of the others maybe we should just rank the 3 alphabetically LOL. They are most certain the killer B's.

You're following along nicely .I was just pointing out that having the reasoning of "Until, a mountain team beats them, you have to rank them ahead of them" holds no water whatsoever as a standard to go by when comparing teams who have not played during that time.
For my money it is a complete toss-up between the three right now.

Bell has beaten some pretty good Johnson Centrals and Harlan Co teams the past few years. Which are BIG 5A schools.
Last year Bell Co was without some great players against Central. Hoskins and Starting Center Marcum. Also it was kept quiet until the season was over. QB Oslonian was very sick the last 3 games of the year. He had a hard time getting over the sickness, and he lost alot of weight and took the whole winter to get better. I know we got shut out but turned the ball over 3 times inside the 15. Also didn't Wales for Central go down against Belfry?
When Central played Corbin in playoffs last year it was very tight until they put Wales in trying to hold him out due to his injury.

During Bell's run Belfry has also defeated some larger schools as well such as Johnson Central, Ashland, and Henry Clay. It just further spins the wheels.
Wales did go down on the first possession. It was too early to tell, but it appeared Belfry was dialed in on him and it was going to be a long afternoon for him regardless.
Central and Corbin was tight early on, but it ended up being a 62-7 game.
Once again there is no denying Bell has a helluva claim for #2 based on their returning experience, their pedigree, and the sheer talent they have at the skill positions. I just refuse to buy the argument that they deserve a ranking off a statement that has no tangible evidence.
08-13-2012, 03:00 PM
Wales didn't play defense, however, and one team who played Central got shut out. ( Give you a hint, it wasn't us )

And rebel 4 life, they return everybody except for a couple lineman, all receivers, running backs, and d backs

rankings mean nothing.... Belfry should be number 2 since they made it to the title game last year... i miss the old battles back in the early 90's we had with belfry.. looking forward to this season getting under way... Bell County is my fav team but i have all the respect in the world for belfry and coach haywood and wish them nothing but the best of luck this season.
