NCAA has fined Penn State $60 Mil, banned 4-Years from playing in a bowl game and vacated there wins from 1998
07-23-2012, 11:58 AM
Worse than I honestly expected.

I like the 60 mil and the 4 years of no bowl games but I don't like the vacated wins part. This Head coach and the man in jail are not the only reason they got those wins. That is a lot of players and coaches and fans to look in the eye and say even though the coach is dead and the other is in jail and all the people in on this is are gone from the school we are going to erase everything you did from 98 until now. Just my opinion:lame:

Good these needed to happen that administration but football ahead of the welfare of children. The Statue is now down and they have took all of Joe Pa's wins up to 1998. For once even tho many people thought the NCAA had no business ruling in this, got it right with the sanctions they gave them.

Dropped Paterno from first to eighth on the all time wins list.

This penalty sends a message and I think it's fair.
According to the death penalty provisions they couldn't have been given the death penalty...
but I honestly think Penn State would have rather had the death penalty.

Part of me feels like they should have gotten a harsher punishment.

Arguably this is the worst penalty the NCAA has ever doled out to anyone. To me its worse than the death penalty.

They had someone decommit already and it has only been a few hours...
this will be a complete rebuilding process.
I heard they lose 20 schollys a year...
is that true?

The Penn State administration and the NCAA played a good game of "Cover Thine Own Butt". And, the sportscasters, posters, etc. are showing a larger than usual amount of judgmental rage including the need to put college sports in its proper place. After all, these are institutions of higher education and the academic function must come first. And all say "amen".
Now let's get real. Most of you are UK fans. As you like to say, you "bleed blue". Of course, for good effect, you fall in line and complain that college sports are out of control and must be reined in. Everyone is making all the "proper" statements and condemning the "right" people.
But, let me ask you a question since you cry for proper perspective in college endeavors. You all can name all the basketball recruits and significant, if applicable, football recruits at UK. But, how many of you (staunch supporters of the academic function of the college that you all are now) can name any of the Singletary Scholars who will enter UK next month? How many of you ever heard of Singletary Scholars? How many of you ever heard of Dr. Singletary? My guess is the answer is none of you.
You know the coaching staffs for the basketball and football teams. Everyone knows Calipari and Jones. But, how many of you can name the president of the university? My guess is very, very few.
So, condemn all you want. Get real self righteous. But try to be a little honest. You are all in heat waiting for the new school year for the football and basketball seasons. So don't act like you are concerned with the academic purpose and pursuits of the university. None of you "bleed blue" for the College of Arts and Sciences.

^ WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT????
You lost me at "hello"..... Honestly, though your points could be valid in different scenarios, I don't quite understand what point you were trying to make that is relevant to this topic!

Lot's of comments about the death penalty - I was not necessarily in favor of the death penalty, but I would not have been upset if they had. As I have stated before, the is hands down the most blatant example ever faced of "Lack of Institutional Control".
The NCAA did not have to put together an investigation, Penn State did it for them. A lot of people who cry foul to the NCAA have forgotten that PSU's decision to hire Freeh to complete this investigation, thus their own guilt to the entire cover-up. Emertt said it best, had the NCAA performed their own investigation, they could not have produced half of the facts that Penn States own investigation (Freeh Report) uncovered.
This will WRECK the PSU football program, and they may never recover from it. Players (Freshman through Seniors) are already making plans to leave the program now. Recruits will shy away from the program going forward. This happened for the one year that the SMU program was shut down. At the time, SMU was an elite program. The repercussions of losing players, recruits and scholarships, has now made that program no better than a Division 2 program. I see PSU being no better than Northwestern from this point forward.

When it comes to covering up child molestation, I have condemned and will continue to condemn. None of this post is really relevant to the issues at hand.

100% correct. The investigators used are much more qualified to complete the task then anyone the NCAA would have used in house.

Are Singletary Scholars able to convey their thoughts in writing?

Do you get this "charged up" over the other wrongs of our society or do you reserve your indignation to what you see as "covering up child molestation"? My point is not to defend what happened at Penn State. I agree with the poster who said Sandusky should receive the death penalty. My concern is that so many who worship college sports and are really a part of the problem are now playing the "holier than thou" card.

For me to be a fan of college athletics AND academics, I do not have to know every scholarship, endowment, grant or unsubsidized loan that my favorite institutions provide.
http://www.lindsey.edu/offices-and-servi...ships.aspx
The above link is just a FEW of the academic scholarships that my alma-mater provides. That does not include loans or grants. It also does not include scholarships that students can obtain and bring to the institution.
I know many people that work in financial aid offices all over the state, most of them do not know every scholarship available, much less every student that has them.
I appreciate you trying to bring light to the student and academic aspect in all of this, because the $60 million fine WILL HURT THE ACADEMICS OF PENN STATE (I guarantee it) but I think the post come off in bad taste, or it came off trying to highlight a particular scholarship.

I'm not one to play the "Holier Than Thou" card.
But if I ever felt confident in playing it...
it would be on Jerry Sandusky and anyone that willingly covered up his molestation of kids.

^ Same here. When it comes to the nature of the charges in this situation, I feel I can play the "holier than thou" card. It may be one of the few times I can( as I am no saint), but in this situation, I feel confident to do so. Equating this to every problem with college sports and every problem in society is a little off base and somewhat ludicrous.

This punishment is worse than the "Death Penalty"
$60,000,000 fine
4 year bowl ban and scholarship reduction
Athletic department on probation
Unfortunately for the victims, their payday in court just decreased tremendously, especially if the amount was based off of percentages. The NCAA needed to come down hard on PSU, but this may be a little too harsh and a little to greedy by the NCAA.

Good Lord!
I don't think the NCAA has any business whatsoever doing that to Penn State.
I'm not taking up for Sandusky and the conspirators that hushed it up. But that's a legal matter not a NCAA matter. I realize I'm probably in the minority on this but the NCAA infractions for this sets a dangerous precedent.

Lack of institutional control is one of the charges that the NCAA uses in many cases. If this is not "lack of institutional control", I guess I do not know what the definition of the term is.

They are punishing all the innocent people now for what the guilty people did. I WILL SAY THIS AGAIN THE MAN WHO DID THIS IS IN PRISON AND HE DON'T CARE. THE COACH IS DEAD AND HE DON'T CARE. THE PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO HIDE THIS ARE GONE SO AT THIS POINT WHO IS BEING PUNISHED????

Their is no true definition of "lack of institutional control". This has expanded it to cover almost everything.
I'm not saying the Penn State gang is innocent. I am saying their was no competitive advantage gained or NCAA rules violated. This is a case for federal and state law inforcent. Noy an athletic agency. Lack of institutional control could be a dangerous notion.

I want you to put yourself in all the people who are still at Penn states shoes and all the players since 98 also. Say you have a very good job that you love and you have put like 14 years into this company so far. Then one day you come to work and they tell you that a fellow worker did this same thing to kids and a few other people knew about it but hid it. Now the man who did it went to prison and the people who hid it are fired and will probably get in some trouble with the law also. Then they tell you that they are going to shut the company down for 4 years and fine the company and also that they are going to take away the credit for the last 14 or 15 years that you worked. How would this make you feel and how would it be fare to you or all the other people you work with???

I thought the NCAA was pretty hard on these penalties UNTIL I saw that Penn State signed a "consent decree" which basically said that these are either self imposed penalties from PSU enforced by the NCAA, or that they told the NCAA ahead of time that whatever the penalty is, we'll take it.

Exactly it punishes those who have done nothing. Those who commited the acts are noy being punished by this at all.
