Madden was named to the Junior All-Star team and will be on most pre-season All-State teams so she is a no brainer #1.
Morris has gotten national attention and will get some good pre-season coverage.
Smith was hurt by her teams poor performance in the region in their upset loss to North Laurel.

But, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Should be a good march for the lady Colonels.

I agree everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm just telling you how they will be ranked.
There were times last year I thought Smith was as good as anyone.
I have Whitley No. 1 in my personal rankings. They'll probably be second in the coaches' poll though. The bad game against North Laurel will be hard for some to forget.

True, but you cant rank Clay anything but first.
Until someone knocks them off, you cant go against them.
I would love nothing more than to see Whitley get their first region in over 20 years, almost 30, and get to state.
All joking aside, Smith will be ranked second behind Madden, with Morris third IMHO.
If Whitley wants to win and win a lot, a lot will ride on Whitleys other players, not Smith.
Powers will be back for her senior year, and should be great at guard, and Craig has got to mature and with another years experience, should be much better down low.
Im excited about this year, maybe the best teams weve had in a very long time.
What does Clay bring back beside Madden? Whos going to be the surprise? What does North return? How far can Bell and Harlan County go?

Was Smith playing the other day when HCHS beat Whitley?
Couldnt make the game but caught the score in the sports section.

I have no clue.
I havent kept up with them this summer.
Whitley only lost 2 seniors, and one of them wasnt a big impact. However, the other one did start, but i feel like we can replace her pretty easily.

Clay County will be very strong inside with the big three of Cheyenne Madden and fellow senior Morgan Chestnut along with junior Sara Robinson. They will be backed up by Kelly Roberts who has the potential to be great in a couple of years. Her mother Kim (Jones) played on the state championship team in 89
Out front they will have freshman Talaura Mathis who is already in the top five in career three point shots. She can handle the ball enough to play point but is much better at the wing. The point will be sophomore Ajaycia Cotton. If they can develop some depth at the guard position they will be ok.

Sounds like Clay should still be very strong.
This will be Andersons last year coaching Whitley.

Players: Madden, Morris, Stephney
Teams: Clay, Whitley, HCHS
To Run: I dont have any idea why you believe Smith should be in front of Morris. Dont go by what I have to say, I will leave that to the professionals. Check this out:
Courier Journal - Morris is ranked as the #1 player in the STATE for the class of 2015.
Rick Bolus - Morris is ranked #9 in the STATE. Smith didnt even crack the top 100. Morris is also on his National Rankings.
Morris has had 5 Division I scholarship OFFERS during her FRESHMAN year, they are: Louisville, Eastern KY, Western KY, Xavier and Virginia Tech.

Nice to see you getting worked up.
You will see why i think she is better this year, and you should have seen it last.
I watched the Whitley/Bell game.
It was clear Smith was the best player on the court and was for just about every game Whitley played this year.
Morris is all Bell has, it makes a player look better when your the only star on the team. The garnett girl was the only other bell player who touched the ball it seemed.
Whitley had 3 or 4 decent scorers which makes it harder, especially when Anderson would sit Smith for most of the 4th qtr in a lot of games because of blowouts while Smith played the whole game just about everygame.
Smith and Madden are close, with Morris a distant third.
Take your courier journal back to lville, nobody reads that garbage anyways.
To much hype.

From the looks of your posts, you are obviously the one that gets "worked up". Instead of writing these posts you need to have your own recruiting service or write articles for a major newspaper since you think one of the biggest papers in the state is sub par. What, prey tell is your opinion of ESPN, because she had an article on there too back in June. If you would be so kind, I would like to know what qualifies you to have the expertise that a head coach from "UCONN, Stanford or Notre Dame" doesnt have? We can go back and forth as to who is the better player in the region every year, but when it comes down to it, signing day is the deciding factor in who will be the better player. By the way, how many DI coaches are looking at your player? How many DI offers has she received? Please let me know when anyone outside the region ranks her in the top 20 of any state wide rankings, then we can have a fair, intelligent and even debate.

It appears two different types of criteria are being used in this debate - one is college potential and the other high school performance.
It should be clear that Morris has the biggest upside as far as college with her size, skills and potential for continued improvement. Smith was as good of a high school player last season as Morris and perhaps better. Her performance in the regional tournament, however, probably left a lot of people wondering what all the fuss was about, especially if they didn't see her play several times during the regular season.
There are hundreds of examples, but if you remember the late 80s you may have watched Richie Farmer and Allan Houston in the state tournament. Farmer was as good of a high school player as Houston and maybe better, but Houston was clearly the superiod college prospect and went on to play in the NBA.
I would rate Madden as the top player in the region with Morris just ahead of Smith for second.

Good post HDE. Valid points. I think we may need to remember that we should be proud of all our student athletes who represent our region, no matter what school they represent. I do think that if Smith was as good or better than Morris, she would be getting some attention for her skills after her high school career, just as Madden is getting invites and looks from the next level.

I usually agree with you, but there's no way North Laurel is that high. They lost three starters from a team that wasn't that good. Their coach does a good job but they have a long way to go from what I saw this summer.
Corbin is definitely a top five team. I'd put South Laurel ahead of North, too, and perhaps Barbourville, Knox Central and Harlan.
