With just three seniors on the roster, Ballard High School softball coach Alan Jones has one of the youngest teams he’s ever had at the school.But the baby Bruins gutted out another victory Monday night to keep their season alive.
Jessica Adell’s single over third base scored Madison Wise in the ninth inning to give defending regional champion Ballard a 2-1 victory over Male in a Seventh Region Tournament quarterfinal at Southern.
“When you’re playing teams like (Male), you’re going to need some luck to keep going,” Jones said. “Our girls gave 120 percent and showed how tough they are mentally.”
Ballard (33-4-1), ranked No. 2 in the state, advanced to face Assumption in Wednesday’s semifinals at the University of Louisville’s Ulmer Stadium. Game times for the semifinals have been moved to accommodate Ballard’s graduation, with the Eastern-Mercy game now set for 6:30 p.m. and Ballard-Assumption at 9 p.m.
Ballard took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth Monday, but No. 12 Male (25-12-1) answered with a run in the seventh to stay alive.
In the ninth, Ballard’s Wise bunted to Male pitcher Alex Miozza, whose throw went into right field and allowed Wise to move to third base. Adell followed with the game-winning single.
Adell, a sophomore who already has committed to Tennessee, also was tough on the mound. She allowed five hits and struck out five.
Miozza gave up four hits and struck out three.
“She pitched a great game,” Male coach John Hammond said. “Her off-speed stuff was off just a little bit, but everything else was working well. … She’s just a junior, and she’ll be something to be reckoned with next year for sure.”http://saxo.highschoolsports.net/article...ll?Avis=B2

Assumption 1, Christian Academy 0: Emily Carmack scored from third after a botched suicide squeeze in the sixth inning to give the No. 6 Rockets (32-6-1) their only run against the No. 15 Centurions (28-8).“The squeeze didn’t work, but we put the necessary pressure on them and scored,” Assumption coach Jennifer Hunt said. “We had to put some pressure on them because we weren’t going to outhit their pitcher.”

Eastern 4, Sacred Heart 3: The No. 25 Eagles (24-15) overcame 1-0 and 3-1 deficits to defeat the Valkyries (20-13) and advance to the regional semifinals for the fourth time in five years.Pitcher Casey Smith homered in the fourth to pull Eastern within 3-2, and the Eagles scored twice in the fifth to take the lead. Andrea Neal singled and scored on an error to tie it, and Rachel Kelley’s two-out single scored Kerry Hager for a 4-3 lead.
The Valkyries had runners at first and second with two out in the seventh, but Melody Gayheart grounded out to shortstop to end the game.
Kelley, Smith and Neal each had two hits for Eastern. K.J. Holden homered for Sacred Heart.

Mercy 5, Fern Creek 0: Freshman Jordan Vorbrink had two doubles and an RBI and sophomore Erika Downey had two RBIs as the No. 4 Jaguars (30-8) defeated the Tigers (18-14).Vorbrink had an RBI double and Downey an RBI single as Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Downey added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-0.

Oldham County 10, Owen County 0: Sarah Lopesilvero and Alli Veech had back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Colonels (32-6) shut out the Rebels (18-16) in six innings at South Oldham High School.With the win, Oldham County set a new school record for single-season victories.

Mercy Academy’s athletic teams will be switched to the Sixth Region for the 2012-13 school year, but the Jaguars will be leaving the Seventh as a regional softball champion for the seventh time in 10 years.
“It’s great to leave with the trophy,’’ Mercy coach Josh Bloomer said after the Jaguars — No. 4 in the state coaches’ poll — broke open a close game with four runs in the seventh inning to beat defending champion and No. 2 Ballard 6-1 in the Seventh Region final Saturday at the University of Louisville’s Ulmer Stadium.
With freshman Jordan Vorbrink and seniors Morgan Ellington and JJ Francis providing the big hits, Mercy (32-8) advances to the Rawlings-KHSAA state tournament that starts Thursday at Jack C. Park in Owensboro.
Mercy, the state runner-up in 2009 and 2010, will play Sixth Region titlist Bullitt East (28-9) at 7 p.m. Thursday in first-round play. Bullitt East won over Butler 8-2 earlier Saturday at U of L.
In avenging a 2-1 loss to Ballard in last year’s regional semifinal, Mercy pounded out 11 hits off Ballard sophomore Jessica Adell, who limited Assumption to one hit in a 3-0 semifinal win Friday.
“We kept knocking at the door, but Ballard made some big (defensive) plays,’’ Bloomer said. “Our team played unbelievable ball. They were loose all day.’’
Leading 2-1 going into the seventh, Mercy clinched matters when Aubrey Meiners singled to open the inning. Adell got the next two batters out, but Morgan Meyer singled and Vorbrink was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Ellington, a left-handed hitter, singled to right field to score pinch runner Randi Hawksley for a 3-1 lead. Meyer ran home when Ballard catcher Alexis Hull threw to second to try and pick off Vorbrink. That made it 4-1.
Francis, who pitched the first four innings before being relieved by Leigh Ellen Thomas, singled up the middle for two more runs and a 6-1 bulge.
