DeSales scored five runs in the first two innings, then took advantage of some North Bullitt base-running blunders and won 7-3 Monday morning in the first round of the Sixth Region baseball tournament at St. Xavier High School. The Colts (21-17) will face Pleasure Ridge Park in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Louisville’s Jim Patterson Stadium.
“I know they (PRP) will have all their arms ready,” said DeSales coach John Hodges. “I hope we see them all.”
Against North Bullitt (20-19), DeSales scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, ignited by Blake Dewsnap’s two-run triple that knocked in Hunter Tipton and pinch-runner Travon Metcalf.
The Colts added two runs in the bottom of the second inning as Ryan Ritchie delivered a two-run double to center field.
Trailing 5-1, North Bullitt mounted a rally in the top of the third inning.
The Eagles’ Jordan Burden singled to start the inning but was picked off when DeSales center fielder Ryan Selent caught a fly hit and threw to first base.
However, the next three Eagles — Clayton Kelly, Tyler Lloyd and Jesse King — all singled, then Cody Stinnett doubled. On Stinnett’s hit, King crossed the plate with no play but apparently missed it. DeSales made an appeal at the plate, and King was ruled out for missing the plate. His run would've sliced the deficit to 5-4.
DeSales starter Pat Remines said he didn’t see the runner miss the plate but was told to make the appeal.
“They could’ve had a huge inning,” Remines said. “I was pretty happy that happened.”
“You have to tip your hat to him,” North Bullitt coach Brian Wise said of Remines. “He took advantage of our mistakes and then shut us down.
“At that point (in the third inning), we knew it was a blown opportunity,” Wise said. “We should’ve still been batting but that’s on us. ... We’re competitive. We can play with a lot of teams. But we have a very small margin for error.”
The Eagles didn’t have another baserunner.

East 6, Holy Cross 4: Trevor Gonzalez struck out Holy Cross’ Nelson Bodenbender with the bases loaded to end the No. 18-ranked Chargers’ victory at Eastern High School

Holy Cross (9-20) scored twice in the top of the seventh to pull within 6-4 but couldn’t get closer as Bullitt East posted its school-record 33rd win against six losses.“This group just keeps finding a way to win,” Bullitt East coach Jeff Bowles said. “I’ve stopped pulling my hair out because of them. I just shave my head once a week.”
Bullitt East’s Nos. 8-9 hitters were a combined 5 for 6 as Josh Stearns had two bunt singles and Colten Maupin went 3 for 3. Hunter Wood added two hits, including a solo homer in the first inning.
Maupin (8-1) also was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs in four innings.

Butler 16, Doss 7: The Bears (25-12) fell behind 6-0 and then stormed back after a seven-hour heat delay against the Dragons (8-22) at St. Xavier.Butler trailed 6-4 when the game was called and then -- when the game resumed at 7:15 -- scored 12 runs in the next three innings. Doss certainly didn’t help its cause with nine errors in the final four innings.
The Bears led just 8-7 and then scored eight runs in the sixth inning while sending 12 batters to the plate. In that inning – the bottom of the sixth – the Dragons committed five errors.
Butler will face Bullitt East (33-6) in the semifinals Wednesday at 7:30.
