Ok T.h. What Appriciation To Coaches Who Believed In You And Gave You A Chance. Hummm, Son Did You Get To Play Any Before Last Season Or Did The Previous Coaches Not Even Give You A Look. You Tell Me.

As I Recall, The New Coaches Pushed You, Worked Your But Off, And Made You A Pretty Good Player In The End.but I Guess You Dont Appriciate The Fact These Coaches Believed In What You Could Do And Gave You An Opportunity.

Ok Vince, I can live with the things you are saying. If you are this dedicated to the team, then so be it. I wish you nothing but the best. I will cheer for Magoffin County even if Bin Laden was the coach. However, I would appreciate it if you did this though.............Speak to someone about some discipline for this team. I went to some games last year when it appeared the players were more interested in fighting as they were playing. Discipline for 15 and 16 year olds is the most important thing you can instill into them.

Okay, I have read this thread and pondered the various points made. I agree that leadership must come from the top. In this instance, the Super needs to consider all the angles.
The Brown gentleman was an excellant coach. He did as much as he could do, considering what he had to work with. (i.e. school support, student interest, player interest/participation, parental support). His departure was disappointing and ill-timed, but hardly the place to lay the blame.(I would hazard a guess that my first impression of where the blame should be placed on this one is the reason he left in the first place... but I'm will to explore the issue)
The school was left in a lurch to find someone to "take the program" and that's exactly what they did. They found someone to "take" the program because they had to. Now, did anyone think the kids would "buy in" to this person? It would have depended upon that person's football pedigree, and since he didn't come from a football background, there may have been some misgivings among the diehards. Granted, I am sure that those kids, who were diehards and would have played for Foghorn Leghorn should he be hired to coach, were always gonna be there & ready to strap on pads and line 'em up. (I'm sure this number was low, but hey, if there was 11 guys out, there you go)
I'm surprised they even won one game, but this shows there's a glimmer somewhere in that school for football. Therefore, the school should have been trying to make plans to help that program in any way they could. The current coach may not be what they need or even who they want, but considering he probably had an idea of what he was getting into and did it anyway, gives him at least the right to decide his own fate and/or help in the construction of this program.
I would wager he might be willing and possibly helpful in creating a POA with the Administration for success. I bet they could make a call to Morgan County and ask for some helpful insights. Keeping in mind, Morgan had once been a football power with a frame of reference (in dozens of men who played for Morgan with sons coming along to play Moragn football) & understanding Magoffin's program is a comparatively new one, in that it's been there for less than 20 years.
Magoffin's plan probably won't be all that helpful to the current high school players, but then getting them to understand that showing up, doing their best, and helping to build a program is something they can take extreme pride in being a part of for their school and community.
Elementary is where this program/school system needs to look. Phillip Haywood began building P-burg's football program in the elementary school, while he was the high school head football coach. He created a great team from the ground up. As he moved on to Belfry, a couple of new coaches have come in and enjoyed success based upon a firm foundation. Magoffin must look to help itself. Supporting its program and its student athletes from grade school up. Purchasing safe and good equipment, hiring knowledgeable and trained coaches. (hiring folks willing to get the training they need if they need it) Working together to be a success. They know how to do this, look @ their basketball programs. They just need to do it. If they aren't willing to make this effort, then my suggestion would be to eliminate the program all together instead of wasting time, lives, dreams, and money.
Sorry it took so long to get to the crux of this question, but it's not an easy process for me. The school, school council, and its administration is solely to blame for where their football program currently finds itself. If they have a new Principal, then perhaps there's hope.

i agree dicipline is very crucial.i would just like to see magoffin learn how to win.it all starts with the little things-discipline, dedication, sacrifice. I DO AGREE all the resources are not there, but i still think a great improvement can be made. NO i do not see a dist champ in the future, but i do see them being better and making improvement if they have structure and organization. NO, i agree coach brown was a great guy, but coach howard was not a total failure either.

OK. This is weird. My buddy called me long distance this morning to tell me I was being "trashed" on this sight. First of all, I am glad to see there is another sight (that is free) to talk about high school sports! I am also surprised to see that I am being talked about on it! I thought I was long forgotten.
Moderators, I assure you I am who I say I am, please let this post go on, it will be my first and last.
My name is DAYNE BROWN. I live in St. Cloud Florida. Let's get that out of the way that I am not like some of the gutless cowards on this sight who get on here and trash people that they don't know, and talk about things that they have no idea what they are talking about- while hiding under the security blanket of a false name.
I will say this first. When I took over the football program at Magoffin in 1999, I decided I was going to build everything around "class". That is harder to do than it sounds but I started first and foremost by never saying anything negative about the coach whom I was replacing, Eric Ratliff (Who I happen to respect very much for his football knowledge and coaching ability by the way). We tried to give people incentive to be at practice, by both making it fun and by not allowing them to play if they skipped out.
I started the job only three weeks before the first scrimmage and it is a credit to coach Ratliff that we finished the season as well as we did because the kids had worked alot on fundamentals during his tenure which left me with the ability to install the new system.
Secondly, I will say this. It is obvious that in the eyes of some I did a good job in my time there, and others think I was lousy. I will let my number of wins and losses speak for itself over time but simply say that when we were fortunate enough to win it was because our kids did a great job and when we lost it was my fault because I did not have them prepared enough. BUT, I did my best. I mean I gave it everything I had. EVERYTHING. It hurts when you give your all to a goal, especially towards helping young people (which after all should be the main purpose for any teacher or coach right?) and people talk about you and criticize you...sometimes the you are backstabbed or criticized by people you tried to help the most- parents of kids who's camp you paid for, or maybe the ones you gave a ride home everyday, or people who you considered friends who stood at the fence on Friday night and called you and your kids losers. But still that is a part of the job that I have learned to live with, it goes with the territory.
Thirdly, let me address those who say things like "this football team never lifted weights in four years" and things that insinuated that we didn't work hard. THAT IS A LOAD OF CRAP! You can question my record, wins- losses, play calling, whatever you want but ask kids like T. Allen, J. Helton, A. Smith, B. Marshall and tons of other players I had during my tenure why we didn't lift and you will be laughed at!
Fourth, I wil make one personal comment. I loved (and still love) my kids. PERIOD. I miss all of you guys and think about you everyday. YOU are the stories I tell my kids in St. Cloud!! I am so proud of all of you!! When we left Salyersville, we left alot of students, faculty, friends and family that we cared about deeply. After driving as far as Savannah Georgia, in the old U-haul, we stopped to get gas and were still wiping the tears out of our eyes. In the deepest part of our hearts we will always be HORNETS. That was the thing that made the decision to leave the hardest thing I have ever (or will ever) have to do! It turned out to be the right one, we are happy and fortunate to be in another great community.
Finally I will address all of the "critical" people on here (you know who you are) As I have said before, I believe as any coach should, I had my priority list in good order. I put the kids first and worked as hard as I could. Also notice that I have never once said anything negative about the administration, players, or current staff in the process of posting this....which is something some of you need to learn, CLASS! I would like to wish the new administration and football staff- especially coach Howard luck in their endeavors.
On a side note, "vince" (whoever you really are) you seem to know an awful lot about me and the terrible job I did during my tenure at MCHS. You also seem to be very aware of what is currently going on with the Magoffin football program. I guess what I am trying to say is that speaking from my personal experience, you seem to be someone who is "in the know"....perhaps you are someone MCHS should hire as a consultant or, maybe you are someone who is actually on the staff presently. If you are on staff or are considering hepling the MCHS football program get back to it's illustrious glory days, I have a couple of suggestions for you-
1. Don't say anything that could be mis-interpreted as being critical of the previous staff-we loved those kids and as you can see many of them are very loyal to us and you would only be alienating the present staff by doing so.
2. Make sure to get copies of all of those great playbooks you mentioned, the one from Marty Jaggers, Ken Roark and especially the ones about special teams since I was too stupid to ever waste time practicing "that there dumb kicking game" .
3. Don't spend so much time in front of the computer! Perhaps if you are currently helping MCHS or you do in the near future, your time would be better served helping with after school conditioning, weightlifting, or supporting other MCHS events such as boys and girls hoops, baseball, or whatever. After all you may run into some recruits at these events.
4. Make sure to keep mentioning "That there big losing streak Coach Brown had"
It makes you look really smart and gosh when you say that I can almost envision Bill Belichik saying the same thing about the coaches he replaced...It will also detract from any unsuccessful or future unsuccessful events in which you are or could ever become affiliated.
5. Sign your name to your posts, especially when you are going to be negative or disrespectful of all of the blood sweat and tears that someone gave a good portion of their life to.
6. If I come up north during the spring or the holidays (if you have given your name by then) could you sit down with me and show me perhaps how real people
run a football program? Gosh that would be great!
Very Sincerely,
Dayne Brown

Vince all yuor doing is blameing the kids, I will say it once and I think anyone from belfry will agree with me, SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS, it all starts from the top, I will give you the main reason I quit the football team, I had no respect for the man that was supposed to be leading me. Either one of them. I never missed a practice either, I had a hurt knee for the first 3 weeks of the season, I had to be checked out, you know what I never missed. I was there.
Then when I got my shot to come back and play I came everyday to practice and I started on the O-line I did a good job from what I saw on film. But I had some ammount of respect for the coaches up until the first timeout when coach Howard came to the huddle cussing everyone out and not telling us our adjustments which to me was a waste of a time out and totally destroying my little respect I had for the man. I played my heart out the rest of the game but 4 or 5 players playing thier heart out doesn't do anything.
SO yeah I know everyones going to be like why didn't you stick with it, I found thier was no love of the game from me. so Vince you blame the kids but when Coach Brown tried everything he could do to get some support from the administration he was denied. Everytime. And I repeat SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS, It all starts at the top.

Magoffin is in desperate need of updated facilities and a restructuring of the football support system before they will be able to compete in district 8.

First off pal you obviously don't know nothing about the birthday ticker thats on my sig and has nothing to do with the topic at hand so if your saying that to make me look stupid you only succeeded in makeing yourself look that way, second it's non of your concern to get on here and blame the kids for lack of dedication and respect, when all the students at MCHS know that they arent getting good supplies to play with and arent getting any finacial support from the school system it makes it very difficult to go and play when you know your not getting fully supported, and i would also like to ask what makes you know about Magoffin football do you come to our practices do you support the team by either helping coach or donateing money you have no idea besides what you see at games what you hear and worst of all what you "THINK" you know...

Very Sincerely,
Dayne Brown

Coach Brown we miss you too, I played for you all the years you coached at MCHS and never once had a complaint to say about you, we might not have been the best but we had fun trying...

Either one of them. I never missed a practice either, I had a hurt knee for the first 3 weeks of the season, I had to be checked out, you know what I never missed. I was there.Coaches get on you to make you better and to motivate you. Stand up like a man and produce; dont tuck your tail and quit. Quitters never win and winners never quit.

DAYNE BROWN, NOT MEANING TO DISRESPECT YOU AT ALL. THE ONLY POINT IM MAKING IS GIVE COACH HOWARD A CHANCE. HE LOST 9 GAMES, HIS FIRST YEAR. THEY WANT HIM GONE.YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS AND THE EXAMPLE IM MAKING IS NOT A PERSONAL DIRECT AT YOU BUT A DIRECT AT THEY LOST A WHOLE LOT MORE THEN THAT BEFORE AND TO NOT BASE THE FACTS ON HIM LOSING 9 GAMES.THERE WERE SOME BRIGHT SPOTS LAST SEASON AND SOME POSITIVES TO BUILD ON. I NEVER SAID YOU WERE A BAD COACH EITHER,IM SIMPLY SAYING YOU LOST SOME GAMES, SO THERE IS NO NEED TO WANT COACH HOWARDS HEAD ON A PLATTER JUST AFTER 1 SEASON.If any offense was given it was not my attention.I DONT KNOW YOU, MY POINT IS DONT TALK FIRING COACH HOWARD AFTER HIS FIRST YEAR CAUSE HE LOST 9 GAMES.MAGOFFIN HAS HAD ALOT WORSE LOSING STREAKS THAN THAT.I never said you didnt work hard,Im sure you did.The main point is this and its the only point=FIRE COACH HOWARD, HE LOST 9 GAMES. MY POINT IS GIVE THE GUY A CHANCE, MAGOFFIN LOST 26 STRAIGHT IN THE PAST. People always throw you up coach Brown, thats good, they thought alot of you.But why cant they show coach Howard a little support as well.Im sure you know xs and os, But coach Howard is the coach now and kids wont come out because hes not you. When you had that losing streak, they never wanted to fire you.Best of luck to you Dayne, wasnt directed at you personally, just the fact that, they have lost before, so no need to jump the gun and wanna get rid of coach Howard after 1 season.Cheem, your a quitter, you summed it all up when you said you had no respect.Mabey he cussed you as you say cause you were laying down, dont know, dont care.
01-16-2006, 01:06 PM
SEE, THATS MY WHOLE POINT IN A NUT SHELL. ALL POSITIVES ABOUT DAYNE, ALL NEGATIVES ABOUT COACH HOWARD. HOW CAN AN IMPROVEMENT EVER COME FROM THAT?
OK, IM DONE WITH THIS POST. IF YOU EVER WANT TO GET BETTER, START SUPPORTING WHAT THEY HAVE NOW, NOT WHAT THEY DID.DAYNE, NOT AN INSULT TO YOU AT ALL.
SUPPORT COACH HOWARD, HE IS YOUR COACH. ITS GOOD TO RESPECT COACH BROWN, IM SURE HES EARNED IT, BUT HOW BOUT DOING THE SAME FOR YOUR COACH NOW.IM OUT ON THIS ONE, ITS GETTING NOWHERE.Cheem, when your not a quitter, I might consider listening to you.You really dont even need to talk about football.

I'll talk about football whenever I want to your the one blameing the kids, if you haven't relised its not all the kids fault Coach Brown had a great way to get people to practice, they tried to make it fun and if you didnt come you didn't play simple as that. and If you arn't going to listen to me IDC what you say anymore all your doing is makeing your self seem like an arrogant Butt. I state my opion on this message board as much as you can. and I'll say I commend Coach Howard for taking the job but Magoffin needs to search for someone else who knows football, played and has coached some where else.

alright... (mudvayne) i know all vince.... ok well I was on the team for the past 2 years I never played football before untill my Junior year and I thought I would give it a shot. I started out and I fell inlove with playing football. Coach Brown was a great coach. I would have loved it if he would have stayed for my senior year. Because him and I bonded on the field and in the classroom he was my sociology teacher. Coach made sure we was always on time and if you wasnt you ran. I remember one time me and a few of the players where playing halo as usual and we were about 10 mins late for film on thursday. Well we got our clets on and ran for 2 hours. The following night we travled to Pike Central and pulled out a victory. I was at practice everyday this year except one I had to go to the doctor to see if I could play by last game as a Hornet due to a broken bone. Im not faulting either coach but I sure as heck dont think that any one should be dogging coach Brown. He is a great guy and great coach.. I wondered so many times if he was keeping up with us this year. I really hope that Magoffin Football gets better.

Noone Dogged Coach Brown Personally At All, Its All About Giving Coach Howard A Fair Shot. Im Sure Dayne Gave 100%. But There Should Not Be Talk Of Firing Coach Howard Cause He Lost 9 Games Last Year Either.read My Posts, Never Dogged Dayne Personally, Just Stated They Did Lose 26 Games In A Row Before, So No Need To Fire Coach Howard For Losing 9 His First Year.ok You Played Last Year Then, You Tell Me, How Many Kids Came To Practice Daily?
Can You Blame The Administration For That?ok Ive Said It But Now I Mean It Im Done With This Post. Goodluck To Dayne And Magoffin Co. Football.
Support Coach Howard, Or It Will Only Get Worse. And Whats A Mudvayne?

I respect coach howard for giving me the chance to play my senior year. But there is NO reason i mean NO reason to single out people on here calling them Quitters and Blameing us the Kids. Trust me after the game cheem quit i quit also. But i came back cause of my team i dont blame cheem for quitting. i got chewed for missing blocks when they gave me the start over someone who practiced all week at that spot while i sat on the sidelines and watched but when youi watch the film Cheem has all of his blocks and make few or no mistakes Trust me Coach howard and Fugate chewed me out on regular basis for missing blocks but didnt chew out the other 4 lineman that made more errors than me. i thought about quitting all the time but i had my reasons to stay and i about quit the week before senior night cause of the cussing and geting chewed out was not worth it . All this thread has done ha dissed the former players and coaches and has had nothing postive to say about my team.
SO TALK ALL YOU WANT, SAY WHAT YOU WANT, KEEP THIS POST GOING AS LONG AS YOU WANT. BUT YOULL ALWAYS BE LABELED AS A QUITTER, YOU WALKED OUT ON YOUR TEAM AND THOPUGHT OF NOONE BUT YOURSELF. THERES NO I IN TEAM.
For the team next year never quit never give up. All the hard work you put in will come be worth it. dont worry about what people say on here or the other site just keep your heads up and try your hardest.
