10. Howard Schnellenberger never did win his football national championship at Louisville, but his 1990 Cardinals team did defeat Alabama (think about that), 34-7, on Jan. 1, 1991 at the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. That win stirred the momentum to build Papa John's Cardinal Stadium and eventually led to the Cards' victory over Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 2, 2007.

9. Kentucky and Duke played what is considered the greatest game in the history of the NCAA Tournament on March, 28, 1992 in Philadelphia. The Blue Devils topped the Wildcats, 104-103, on Christian Laettner's jump shot at the buzzer, a video clip that still annoys UK fans.

8. The Ryder Cup came to Valhalla Golf Club in Eastern Jefferson County for the first time on Sept. 19-21, 2008 -- and the Americans dominated the European team, 16 1/2-to-11 1/2. The U.S. won for the first time in four Ryder Cups despite the absence of the injured Tiger Woods.

7. Secretariat began his rush to the cover of Time magazine and winning horse racing's first Triple Crown in 25 years by taking the 1973 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. One year later a record 163,628 fans stuffed the track for the 100th running of the Derby.

6. Denny Crum coached Louisville to its first NCAA title on March, 24, 1980, defeating UCLA, 59-54, in Indianapolis. Louisville was officially a prime player on the national scene, appearing in three more Final Fours and winning another title over the next six seasons.

5. Adolph Rupp coached Kentucky to its first NCAA title on March 26, 1948, defeating Oklahoma State, 46-36, in Seattle. Thus started a tradition that has stretched over seven NCAA titles. Only UCLA has won more.

4. Louisville, 80, Kentucky 68, the Dream Game, played March 26, 1983, the NCAA Tournament Southeast Regional final in Knoxville, Tenn. After years of dodging U of L, UK was finally forced to acknowledge -- and play -- the Cardinals by the NCAA bracket. An annual series began the following November -- and a football series between the schools began a decade later.

3. Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali) stopped Sonny Liston to win the heavyweight championship of the world on Feb. 25, 1964 in Miami Beach, Fla. Ali later became known as "The Greatest," and the most famous athlete in the world -- with his own conference center in downtown Louisville to prove it.

1. Kentucky vs. Louisville, NCAA Final Four, Saturday in New Orleans. Wildcats are trying to win their eighth NCAA title, first for John Calipari. Cardinals are trying to win their third national title, first with Rick Pitino at U of L. Calipari and Pitino are not Facebook friends, but they have united to turn the attention of the basketball universe on the Bluegrass State.
