George Rogers Clark seniors Adam Fatkin and Bopper Stenzel wanted to finish their careers on the big stage. They did just that.
Although the Cardinals saw their season come to an end with a 62-39 loss to Louisville Trinity in the PNC Bank KHSAA Sweet 16 quarterfinals at Rupp Arena, the two seniors took the setback in stride following the contest.
“It's been fun,” said Stenzel, who finished with 11 points. “I'm proud that we (when we ended the season), we took a loss at Rupp.”

Fatkin agreed.
“It was a great season,” he said.
Clark (31-6) ended the successful campaign by winning eight of their past nine games and making its third state appearance in six years, losing in the quarterfinals each time.
“Only one team (in the state) ends with a win in the state of Kentucky and that's what makes it just a great game in our state,” Clark coach Scott Humphrey said. “It always hurts when you lose and it doesn't matter what part of the tournament you lose at it. But with this bunch right here, it's just as an enjoyable of a year as you could have in high school coaching … how they take care of business on and off the court. It hurts (when) you lose, but it hurts more (to see them) leave the program.”
Trinity advances to the state semifinals and will take on Southwestern in the state semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rupp Arena. The Shamrocks, making just their second-ever appearance in the tourney, stretching their winning streak to 15 games entering the final day of the prep basketball season.
Trinity was without standouts Darryl Hicks and James Quick, but made up for the absence of the two starters by connecting on 10 shots from long range.
“The threes they made were just daggers,” Humphrey said. “We wanted to make them a one jump-shot shooting team (and) we felt like we could live with that, but for them to shoot 66 percent from the (three-point line), that's very tough to overcome. I felt like that really took the wind out of our sails.”
Trinity sharpshooter Nathan Dieudonne made four of his team's threes and led all scorers with 25 points.
“Whenever we made a run, it seemed like he stepped up and knocked one down,” Humphrey said.
The Shamrocks' defense forced Clark into nine turnovers and 35-percent shooting from the field. Clark's offensive output was its lowest of the season. Trinity also held a 31-18 edge on the boards.
“Defensively, I thought we did a great job of really locking them down in the half-court, contesting shots and rebounding the ball,” Trinity coach Mike Szabo said. “There's no question that was the key.”
Clark's original game plan was to “hang around” during the contest with its mental toughness.
“The whole deal was to fight, crawl, scratch and get (the game) to the fourth quarter so we could have a shot to win it,” he said. “I really wasn't concerned with how we got to that point, because Trinity is going to make you look bad at times and you just have to play through it.”
The contest was the finale for Clark seniors Bopper Stenzel, Adam Fatkin, Charlie Rogers, Taylor Howard, Dominic VanCleve, Tyler Carrier, Trevor Gray and Andrew Howe.
As for Trinity, Szabo hopes his team's defense will carry them deeper into the postseason and liked the way his team responded with the absence of two starters.
“Everybody knows how to play,” he said. “We have 14 guys in practice, and we expect the same from No. 14 as we do from No. 1, to be in position, to talk, to be in sync, to contest and block out. It's fundamentals. These guys embrace it. It's hard work, but they love doing that, and they take a lot of pride in it. There's no question about it: Defense wins championships.”http://www.centralkynews.com/winchesters...4999.story
