OK, ITS ABOUT TIME THE ADMINISTRATION STOPS GETTING ALL THE BLAME.
FORMER COACH BROWN WAS A GOOD GUY, BUT HE LOST CLOSE TO 30 STRAIGHT GAMES. LAST YEAR WAS COACH HOWARDS FIRST SEASON. HE WON 1 GAME, HAD A CHANCE TO WIN 3. MAGOFFIN ACTUALLY SCORED ON BELFRY FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER AND MAGOFFIN HAD A SHEPHERD KID WHO SET THE ALL TIME TOUCHDOWN RECORD IN A SINGLE GAME. 2 YEARS AGO MAGOFFIN COUNTY HAD A TON OF TALENT, THAT SAME YEAR THEY LOST TO BETSY LANE.:omg: SO HOW BOUT SOME FACTS, COACH HOWARD WAS LUCKY TO GET 10 KIDS A DAY TO SHOW UP FOR PRACTICE. DONT BLAME COACH HOWARD!:redboxer: THEY HAD A GREAT BACK IN SHEPHERD INDEED, BUT HALF THE O-LINE DIDNT COME TO PRACTICE MORE THAN TWICE A WEEK.IF YOU WANNA BLAME, BLAME A LACK OF DEDICATION NOT THE ADMINISTRATION. YOU PRACTICE LIKE YOU PLAY, DONT COME TO PRACTICE, LOSE 9 GAMES. IF MORGAN COUNTY CAN TURN IT AROUND SO CAN MAGOFFIN......

Sorry, I don't agree.
Leadership STARTS at the TOP--and then goes down. It doesn't start with the players--
THAT IS WHERE IT ENDS. The program needs to be a priority for the administration. I promise--if they lead--the kids will follow. Now, do the kids need to be more motivated--ABSOLUTELY. If you BUILD a program the right way, the kids will work hard to complete the success of the program. They have to have something to buy into. They need someone to help LEAD them to "belief without evidence" (you know--FAITH that the person running the show will lead them in the right direction?
Again--leadership STARTS at the top. And that is where programs are built.

I have tried to read this post with an open mind and I have come to the conclusion that.............................................................................You have no idea what you are talking about.
First of all, Coach Browns teams lost almost 30 straight games in the most competitive 3A district in the state. Comparing that district to the one they are in now is apples to oranges.
Secondly, other than Grayson Smith (who subsequently left teaching), the administration would not hire Coach Brown 1 single assistant that taught in the school district. Not just the high school, but the entire school district! That is a shame!
Thirdly, Have you seen Magoffin County's facilities? Have you seen the equipment the kids have to wear? Especially those in the younger grades? Sorry but that is not the coaches fault!!!
Fourthly, I am not sure what your judge of talent is, but to say that the hornets were loaded with talent is absurd. Outside of Marshall, Shepherd, and Adam Smith, not one of MC's starters would have started on another team in the district.
Another thing you need to be made aware of was Coach Brown's teams were disciplined and they were respectful.
I guess my biggest grip is you are indicating Coach Brown was a failure..............ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He shouldered that program and took lumps for it when he could have left them hi and dry. Now people want to downgrade him. I am sorry but that is wrong!!!

No. Im Not Degrading Coach Brown At All, The Fact Is The Kids Have To Be At Least Dedicated Enough To Come To Practice. And Id Put Belfry, Sheldon Clark , And Pburg On Avg Up Against Any From That 3a Dist Coach Brown Was In.belfry Beat Lawrence This Year And P Burg Beat Ashland Last Year. Im Saying Give Coach Howard A Chance, After All He Did Win A Game And I Do Know The Kids Simply Wont Come To Practice. Magoffin Has Talent, But Dedication Is A Big Question.belfry, Pburg, That Makes For A Tough 2a Dist, Not To Mention Sheldon Clark.
01-13-2006, 08:02 PM
The kids will be dedicated and come to practice when the school cares enough to hire coaches who have played, coached or even watched a football game before.....We played MC for three years now and the last year was no comparison to when the other coach was there, they went from a disciplined team that played our sox off the first year and beat us at our homecoming in 2004 to a bunch that didn't want to do nothing but fight and cheapshot and the coaches encouraged it!!! They must have lined up illegal 50 times finally the refs just quit calling it.:ref1:
If Magoffin is serious about football they will try to hire them a legit coach and get him some help. If they are not that is fine also because that just means an easy win for teams like us and valley. They have the kids but you have to have the support from the top first.
I heard they got a new principal (Staggs?) maybe he will turn it around

Ok, Lets Get Real. Who Is The Big Name Coach Thats Gonna Come To Salyersville. How Bout Lets Work Harder, And Get It Done, No Excuses! You Keep Saying -go Out And Get A New Coach, A Good Coach. Well, It Aint Gonna Happen. Work Harder, Get Dedicated, come To Practice, And Quit Making Excuses. I Guess When Coach Brown Lost Game No.27. You Were Saying The Same Ole Broke Record. Enough Excuses! There Is No Substitute For Hard Work And Magoffins Kids Will Not Come To Practice Or Lift Weights. Time To Be Men Magoffin County And Get To Work. As I Recall Magoffin Had Pike Central Beat So Just How Bad Was Magoffin Again?

Magoffin had PC beat? What was the score? Who won the game? You are making my point for me. If they would have had some coaching maybe they would have won the game!
You know what, you are right though....hey boys work harder! Git in the weight room! Go work your guts out!! Go out and play hard for your school! Don't worry about if they give the team money or try to hire coaches or any of the stuff that other schools do for there programs...just go do it!! Wait a minute vince since you know so much about MCHS maybe you can tell us or someone who plays for MC that reads these posts can tell us- "Is the weight room open?"; "Do they even have a weigft lifting schedule setup?" Do the kids in Salyersville even have a weightroom and if so is it adequate?" When we play over there they don't even have a locker room for us to change in or shower or a place to go at halftime!
Better yet maybe you should apply to be the head coach or assistant coach I bet you can turn it all around. I bet you wouldn't lose near as many games as that Brown fella did!!!
(It is obvious your whole point of the thread is to try and diss him anyways) Speaking of the games he lost look at the four or five seasons he was there and see how many he won I bet it will be a cold day in hell before MC sees that many wins agian by a coach----
Since you have all the answers stop posting on here and go do it!! LEt us know next season win you win a championship!

No No My Point Simply Is Magffin And Pcc Was 0-0 At The Half. Magoffin Was Inside The 10 Twice And Didnt Convert. About An Even Game.pcc Won Barely.a Win Is A Win True, But Magoffin Was Equal To Pcc Talent Wise. So If Pcc Has A Rating Of2.5 Then Magoffin Is A 2.4.
01-13-2006, 09:49 PM
Wasnt The Score Like 20-15---scores Dont Lie. Magoffin Should Have Won By 2 Tds. Drove All Over Pcc.so How Is Pcc That Much Better?
01-13-2006, 10:11 PM
Have you ever even read my posts? Show me where I said PCC was "that much better"
You started a thread that said that
1. Administration was not to blame. I disagree
2. Made a comparison between a coach who, IMHO Did a great job with what he had to work with and one who never played, coached, or even prolly watched a football game and basically said the present one is better...I STRONGLY disagree.
3. Said the kids need to suck it up and work hard. Which I agree with but don't think is going to happen until changes are made.
4. Made a statement that you weren't degrading the old Coach (Brown) when you clearly are. ( I can give you examples if you want me too )
I watched the team play us three years in a row and I am telling you that there was a big difference in that team and it wasn't in talent either....by the way, since you keep bringing up about kids not going to practice and such, I bet the other staff never had problems with kids not showing up or numbers coming out, they sure didn't have problems with em' cheap shotting and fighting like last year, at least not when they played us!

Great post!!! I am sot sure what Vince's point is but I agree with you. Who does he think is responsible for kids coming to practice? He has basically contradicted everything he has said from one post to the next. I respect your post there GOPCHawks. Good luck to Pike Central. They have a great staff up there and are obviously on the way up. I wish Magoffin County cared enough to put that kind of committment into the program. Does the administration not understand how much money they can make from a successful program? This is absurd to me. I know for a fact that Belfry at least breaks even with their expenses and look how many kids it gives an opportunity to go to college for FREE!!!! That is the real disservice here!!! There are some kids at Magoffin County who could get an opportunity to play on the next level and get an education payed for for FREE, and the administration is not doing their part.

Coach Brown made **** sure that you was at practice, if you didn't show up you didn't play. When he called a time out he knew what he was doing. The old Administration at MCHS would not pay for any asst. coaches which is a big bunch of bull. I think I had one new set of pads my 2 years I played. I quit my senior year because I absolutly hated it and didn't enjoy it like i once did.
Coach Brown tried to start a feeder program with a Pee Wee teams, No support from the administration. Quality weight room I wish. But it got the job done when you tried. I think they called for anyone intrested in playing football to come out today I'm not sure how many showed up because I didn't check where they went. But they need to get in the weight room.
Half of the team quit this year becuase they said they weren't having any fun (I know). I know this makes coach brown sound like he doesn't care. But Coach Brown showed you the game and well with me any how he showed me he loved the game. The current Coach they have now I know most people will disagee with me but I think he did it for the money and was the only person to take the job. I commend this to him but he was in over his head and MCHS didn't look good enough for a qualified coach.
Coach Brown worked with what he had , and did the best he could.

Thanks P1. Our kids deserve it. We lucked out when we got Mcnamee back...we owe good old Magoffin for that one, after all that is the game that got "the other guy fired".
How anybody can think for a second that it doesn't all start with the administration is beyond me. If you want my opinion, it starts with the Super and works down from there. Heck if people at the district level want you to have a program that is about the only way you'll have one.
You seem to have a idea about what goes on in S-ville.What about that new principal over there? Will he try to do what it takes to get it turned around?
Are they gonna have the same staff? I heard they ended the season with only a handful of kids...they have the talent thats for sure being the only school in the county, if they just get the support form up top they could have a program to rival Morgan or maybe even a Breathitt in a few years (I HOPE NOT FOR ARE SAKE!)
Well anyways good luck!

Yea and for the oline not showing up for more than twice a week at practice there was only one player that didnt and he usally had 2 work. our program is not going to get any better if kids dont play. ive heard players i know that could make an impact say i dont wanna play and loose. With that attitude the teams already beat cause no one wants to play and loose. but they dont no if that would happen or not.

I am not sure. You would think if the administration was serious, there would have been some major changes done by now. I was told there was two or three vacancies around Christmas time and none of them were filled with possible coaches. I would just assume they drop the program as put a product like they had out there last year. Not only is it embarrassing, there are some kids out there that could get hurt if they are not shown proper technique. The point the administration misses is this.....................When people look and point fingers at magoffin football, they don't point them at the coach, he is doing the best he can with what he has to work with. They laugh and ridicule the administration that is ultimately to blame.

Weight program is essential to any football program IMO
last 4 yrs Magoffin had no weight program. At least this yr the weight room has been cleaned, painted, and ready for use. Coach Howard can either get it done or fail this next yr. Coach Brown had the opportunity the last 4 yrs but fumbled the ball. He had the opportunity to do something special with the athletes he had but football is a 12 mth sport. He had 1 paid and 3 volunteer coaches and in my opinion the last 2 yrs should have been been over 5 wins a season. He made too many excuses for why we didnt win and he had the horses to be better. He should have quit *****ing and got the job done. There were a lot of people that would have helped and made it happen if given the opportunity. hithappe :wieghts: :beerwez:

Sounds like we are dealing with someone in the know here!!! :Geek:
I have been around football programs that are given the resources to compete and I know the difference it makes in coaching. Just look at coaching for example, before you can conduct a practice to truly instruct and prepare your kids not only mentally, but fundamentally, you have to have a minimum of 6 coaches on the field. If you don't have at least that many you are losing ground in some area or the other.
I do not understand where people get off on saying that Coach Brown did not get the job done. These people obviously do not understand the game or what it takes to coach. How many coaches on the high school level do you know had to worry about getting a chain crew for home games, an announcer, making sure the referees had places to change, etc etc. Coach Brown had to spend alot of his time doing administrative things instead of getting focused on the things he needed to be worried about. He is a heck of a coach and a great football mind. Given the resources he will prove that. As a matter of fact, I have heard from one of his close friends that he has already been offered two head coaching jobs in Florida close to where he is coaching at now. They are obviously seeing some potential there.

Ok Cheem, First Of All You Didnt Even Finish The Season, And Fat Man How Many Days Were The Same Kids At Practice, How Many Days Did Magoffin County Get A Look At The Same Kids On O Or D. How Many Times Did Kids Show Up A Half Hour Late Or Not At All.cmon Fatman, You Played, But The Coaches Pushed You To Be A Better Player On The O-line.you Were Much Improved By The End Of The Year, Because The Coaches Pushed You And Wouldnt Let You Lay Down.ask Yourself Fatman, Did You Even Get A Shot Before This Year. They Gave You A Shot And Made You A Decent Player, Because They Pushed You To Work.

I totally agree!!! If anyone was truly around the program, they know that Coach Brown did the best he could with what he had to work with. I am very proud to call Coach Brown a friend and man I wish the Administration would swallow their pride, give the resources needed, and get Coach Brown to come back up north.

FATMAN WASNT IT YOU WHO SAID BEFORE LAST YEAR YOU NEVER EVEN HAD INDIVID. O. DIDNT YOU ALSO SAY THAT BEFORE LAST YEar YOU NEVER EVEN WORKED ON THE KICKING GAME. THINGS WERE DONE RIGHT AT PRACTICE AT MAGOFFIN CO. LAST SEASON.

Vince didnt you state in another thread magoffin would go to the playoffs in 06' i have played for 4 years 3 under coach brown football was fun and he knew what he was doing. as cheem said coach brown tried to start a feeder program but it fell through and as far as the weight room goes coach brown made us lift 3 days a week untill season and yes he dam sure made sure your @$$ was at practice if u missed you didnt play if you were late you had to run. this year the weight room has been remodled but guess what its not being used because coach howard is coaching a basketball team at the moment they wont be lifting weights until feb. 6th which is a crock i think a coach should coach one sport and one sport only well bill mike has done a good job with paintsville but im sure while he is coaching basketball he has assistants making the football players who dont play basketball lift

ok i do think magoffin can make the 4 spot in the playoffs. they should always compete for the 4 spot in that dist.pike central and eastridge will be getting better and so will magoffinco. did you play for coach howard? I AGREE 100% THEY SHOULD BE IN THE WEIGHT ROOM, BUT IM HERE TO TELL YA, THEY TRIED THAT, IT WAS OPEN .GUESS WHAT COACH WILLIAMS AND FUGATE WERE THERE EVERY DAY. 6 OR 7 SHOWED UP A DAY, MABEY 8 OR 9 ON A GOOD DAY.ALOT OF THEM PLAY BBALL, SO COACH HOWARD DECIDED TO START IN FEB. OK, SO NOW YOU KNOW.OH AND BY THE WAY MORE THAN HALF THAT SHOWED WERE INCOMING 8TH GRADERS.BUT ITLL BE OPENED FEB6, THATS BETTER THAN NOT AT ALL.
