Not surprised that Manual won by a margin like this. Hope they play like this against PLD

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Manual High School girls’ basketball coach Stacy Pendleton said his team hasn’t had much flow on offense going back to last week’s final of the Seventh Region Tournament.

But with the season now having reached its final day, Pendleton likes what he’s seeing.

The Lady Crimsons shot a blistering 51.7 percent in the first half, hitting 4 of 8 3-point shots, and had three players score in double figures during a 71-33 blowout of Montgomery County in Friday’s quarterfinals of the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Sweet 16.

A crowd of 3,034 at E.A. Diddle Arena saw Kara Wright score a game-high 13 points to lead Manual. LeAsia Wright (12 points) and April Wilson (10 points, five assists, three steals) also had big games.

“I wanted to see us break through offensively today,” Pendleton said. “I really think April helped us with that early. She played like Miss Basketball the first few minutes and got her teammates and herself going.”

Manual (35-2), No. 1 in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings, reached the state semifinals for the third time in five years and will face Paul Dunbar (30-6) at 11 a.m. EST Saturday. The winner advances to Saturday’s 9 p.m. championship game.

Erica Rogers scored eight points to lead Montgomery County (29-7), which shot just 29.5 percent and committed 24 turnovers. Coach Janie Robinson said there was no dishonor in losing to Manual and Pendleton.

“If I was going to lose – and I don’t like to lose – he would definitely be one I’d choose,” Robinson said. “I wish them well.”

Manual actually trailed 8-3 early but had gained a 14-11 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Kara Wright’s basket capped a 10-0 run that gave the Lady Crimsons a 19-11 bulge at the 7:13 mark of the second quarter.

Wright hit just 2 of 8 shots and scored seven points in Wednesday’s 50-41 victory over Perry County Central but turned things around against Montgomery County.

“Coach (Pendleton) does a really good job of keeping my head up when I don’t always play up to maybe what everybody knows I can play,” she said. “Today was just one of those games for me. My teammates gave me the ball, and I was just feeling it.”

Montgomery County ran into a Lady Crimson buzzsaw after a promising first few minutes, as Manual rolled to a 71-33 win today in the quarterfinals of the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls’ Sweet Sixteen Tournament at E.A. Diddle Arena.
“Once they got the lead, we knew it was going to be pretty tough because it’s a team we can’t press or trap,” MCHS coach Janie Robinson said. “I thought their athleticism – they’re just so athletic, that once we got out of position, they were able to score easily.”

Manual, ranked No.1 in the state in the Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings, won its 20th game in a row and limited its opponent to less than 35 points for the 12th time this year.
Twelve players scored for the Lady Crimsons, paced by senior guard Kara Wright’s 13 points. Senior guard LeAsia Wright (12 points) and senior guard April Wilson (10) also scored in double figures.
“They were playing us man-to-man, and we have some pretty good sets against man-to-man,” Manual coach Stacy Pendleton said. “Nobody can guard (LeAsia) or Kara. They didn’t double them, so we went to them and got a lot of buckets.”
Montgomery County (29-7) scored the first five points of the game and led for much of the first quarter. But Manual ended the first frame and began the second with a 10-0 run, leading 19-11 after a Kara Wright jumper at the 7:19 mark.
LeAsia Wright, a Western Kentucky recruit, scored eight of the Lady Crimsons’ final 10 points before halftime, helping them lead 35-21 at the break.
Manual extended its advantage to as many as 41 points with 1:10 to play, scoring 34 points off 24 turnovers by Montgomery County.
Manual has reached the final four for the third time in five seasons but has never won a state title.
The Lady Crimsons take on Paul Laurence Dunbar at 10 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals, with the championship game scheduled for 8 p.m. that night.

BOWLING GREEN — Manual showed why it's the No. 1 team in Dave Cantrall's Rating the State Thursday by dismantling Montgomery County 71-33 in the quarterfinals of the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls' State Basketball Tournament.

Twelve players scored for the Lady Crimsons (35-2), who will face Paul Laurence Dunbar in Saturday's 11 a.m. EST semifinals in E.A. Diddle Arena.

Kara Wright led the point parade with 13, one more than LeAsia Wright. April Wilson, named earlier in the day as one of five finalists for Miss Basketball, totaled 10 points, five assists, three steals and two rebounds in 19 minutes.

She triggered the offensive breakthrough that Coach Stacy Pendleton was looking for.

"She played like Miss Basketball the first few minutes and got her teammates and herself going," he said.

Manual shot 27-for-57 (47.4 percent) and held Montgomery to 13-for-44 (29.5 percent). The Crimsons finished with a 36-12 advantage with points in the paint, 34-8 off turnovers, 20-0 with second-chance points and 26-5 off the bench.

Manual thus reached the Final Four for the third time in five years.

"They're very, very quick," Pendleton said of Dunbar. "They play a whole lot like we do, so it'll probably be fun. I know they like to run. Hopefully we can keep up with them."

Montgomery (29-7) got eight points from Erica Rogers. Keria Lockett and Macie Spence scored seven each.

Spence, the Lady Indians' representative on the All-Tournament team, also had five rebounds and three assists. The Indians scored the first five points of the game.

"With a team like Manual, we kind of had to pick an area we thought we could get a little bit lucky in, so we started the game trying to back up a little bit and see if they'd miss some outside shots," Coach Janie Robinson said. "Early on, it did work — for about three minutes. Definitely the highlight of the day. Once they got the lead, we knew that that was going to be pretty tough because it's a team we can't press or trap."

Trailing 35-21 at halftime, Montgomery was held to seven points in the third quarter, all by Lockett.

Robinson said she then had a different type of problem in the fourth quarter: "Once they knew we probably were not going to win, everybody got so emotional on the bench that it was hard to get people to finish the game because they are very close."
