Hot-shooting Jeffersontown bombarded Fern Creek with a barrage of 3-point shots to start the second quarter and rolled past the Tigers 87-62 in a 24th District Tournament semifinal Wednesday night at Bullitt East.
âWe shot it well early, and that got us going,â coach Clay Moody said after his Chargers (21-9), No. 8 in The Courier-Journalâs Litkenhous Ratings, breezed into Fridayâs 7 p.m. championship game against No. 5 Bullitt East, the defending Sixth Region champion.
Jâtown led Fern Creek 15-8 after one quarter, then opened the second with a 14-2 run that made it 29-10. Of the Chargersâ five field goals in that streak, four were 3-pointers â two by football star DeMichael Jackson and one each by Desmond Dorsey and Moe Hendricks.
âCoach tells us to shoot with confidence, and thatâs what we did,â said Jackson, who hit three threes and scored 13 points before suffering an injury to his right knee with 1:12 left in the third quarter and Jâtown ahead 62-42. He had to be helped off the court but was walking after the game.
Diondrey Holt led the Chargers with 22 points, though he didnât have any of their seven 3-pointers.
Bullitt East (23-4) played without 6-foot-5 junior guard Rusty Troutman, who had the flu. His replacement, senior Luke Francke, came through with 16 points in a 71-32 romp over Whitefield Academy in the other semifinal.
Senior forward Kory Caufield led the Chargers with 22 points, while 6-9 junior Derek Willis, who has committed to the University of Kentucky, had an off night and scored only 10.
