Bryan Station Coach Donna Murphy was succinct after seeing her Lady Defenders dispatch Sayre 47-33 in a 42nd District first-round game Wednesday night at Henry Clay.

"I'm pleased with it," she said. "It wasn't pretty, but it's a win. And right now, mainly it's about advancing. We did do that."

Bryan Station (14-14) advances to Friday's district finals against Scott County. Both teams will get spots in the 11th Region tournament.

Scott County whipped the Defenders 69-57 on Dec. 13 and 62-53 on Jan. 13.

Sayre (18-9) lost for a second time to Bryan Station. The first came in early December, 52-29.

On Wednesday, the Spartans were overwhelmed 21-3 from the three-point line and 22-6 in points off turnovers.

The Spartans committed 26 errors, twice as many as the Defenders, and saw a four-game winning streak halted.

"The bottom line was, there in a stretch, they just made shots that we were hoping they wouldn't make and sometimes they haven't this year," Sayre Coach Scotty Sutton said.

Serena Sandusky led the winners with 16 points, knocking down all four of her three-point attempts. Victoria McCoy added 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

After shooting 7-for-25 in the first half, the Defenders went 9-for-20 the rest of the way to finish at 35.6 percent.

Maddie Mitchell paced Sayre with 18 points. Gabby Bowie, a 6-foot-3 freshman, contributed nine points, 12 rebounds and four assists, and she blocked six shots.

Hallie Crumbie and Sandusky returned to the Bryan Station lineup after a short absence. Crumbie had to sit because of an ejection. Sandusky had a dislocated shoulder.

Sayre's Sutton was hoping Sandusky's shot wouldn't return right away, opting to focus the defense on Crumbie.

"We made that choice to pack it in and make them beat us from the outside," he said. "To their credit, they did."

Sayre led in the early going, but Bryan Station used a 9-0 run late in the first quarter to lead 14-11 at the break and 22-17 at halftime.

Things snowballed as Station scored the first eight of the second half, including back-to-back threes by Detierra Carpenter and Sandusky.

"I think we came out and played a little bit more aggressively the second half," Murphy said. "The first half, it was very slow-moving, and we weren't getting in our flow defensively. And that's what has to be our game."
