Greenwood had a chance to take the District 14 regular season outright, but Warren Central had a different plan – taking a 51-41 victory Friday at Warren Central High School.
The second quarter was the difference for Warren Central (19-7, 6-2), as the Dragons ran their winning streak to seven and avenged a 37-33 loss at Greenwood last month. Warren Central’s win, combined with Bowling Green’s victory over Warren East, leaves the Gators, Dragons and Purples in a three-way tie for the top three spots in the District 14 Tournament, which begins Feb. 20 at Warren Central.
“We knew this game was going to be important,” said sophomore forward Byron Carver, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds. “We didn’t want them to come in and beat us on our home floor. They are a good team. We just had to fight harder.”
Greenwood (18-8, 6-2) used an 11-2 run to build an 11-6 advantage after one period.
The Dragons heated up in the second period, scoring the first seven points to take a 13-11 lead. In the following stretch, WCHS went 8-for-12 from the field, scoring 20 points. The final three points came on a 3 by Nay Walker off a turnover, which gave Warren Central a 26-20 halftime lead.
“The explosion for 20 in the second quarter is not fun,” GHS coach Jason Stonebraker said. “That kind of comes from the fact we had a horrible week of practice. We didn’t do anything right defensively and I thought they killed us on the boards. Even though they made everything (in the second quarter), that led to them getting offensive rebounds in the third and fourth.”
The Dragons’ led by at least six points during the second half. Walker’s 3-pointer late in the third period gave Warren Central its first double-digit lead of the night at 35-24. Warren Central led by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter, finishing the game shooting 45 percent from the field with a 33-30 rebounding advantage.
Carver led the way, going 6-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Walker added 10 points and Donovan Halsel finished with nine points.
“We did what we had to do,” WC coach William Unseld said. “It was a good win for us. We’re playing well right now. Even early when we were missing shots, I felt good because we were going a little faster up and down the court (than in the first meeting). We didn’t shoot it well tonight, but we rebounded and played good defense. Most nights when you do that, you are going to get a win.”
Wes Johnson led the Gators with 18 points, while Jeff Witthuhn added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
With the three-way tie in the District 14 standings, seeding for the district tournament will now be determined by a draw Sunday at Warren Central High School. The team that draws the No. 1 seed will play either Warren East or South Warren on Feb. 22 in one semifinal game. The other two teams will meet the next night in the second semifinal game.
“It’s not going to matter around here,” Stonebraker said. “In this district anybody can beat anybody on a given night. We have to clean some things up over this next week because this was not our best performance.”
Unseld agreed that any team will be a tough game.
“That’s where we are right now,” Unseld said. “It’s going to be a battle. We have to get prepared and be ready for it.”

Greenwood's road jerseys get uglier every time I see them. I mean they are breathtakingly ugly.

Some wanted to bury Central coming into the year with who they lost player-wise plus losing Coach Riley. Some really wanted to bury them after they set basketball back decades with 78 points in 8.5 quarters one week, including only 33 points the first time they played Greenwood. But the Dragons have now won 8 straight. They are tied with the Purples and Gators for first in the district pending a draw for seeding tomorrow. And the district is at home. February is usually when the Dragons kick it into gear and this year is no exception.
