Mercer took the lead for good at 26-25 with 5:45 to play in the third quarter on a jumper by Tabby Shewmaker, and a steal by Cawood Dedman less than a minute later led to a Taylor layup that gave the Titans a 30-25 lead that equaled the largest by either team.
Dedman had eight steals and four assists, Claunch had six rebounds and Shewmaker had five rebounds for Mercer, which outrebounded Lincoln 30-27.
Emily Fox led Lincoln with 20 points after going 4 for 5 from 3-point range in the first half — she didn’t attempt a 3 in the second half — and she had a team-high eight rebounds.
“We could recover on the rest when we kind of stopped her shooting,” Taylor said. “I told Cawood and Catheryne, ‘You think you’re up on her close enough, get closer, because she’s going to shoot it.’”
This was Mercer’s first win over Lincoln since the 2005-06 season, the last before the Mercer-Harrodsburg merger, and the current Titans’ first win over the current Patriots either in high school or in middle school.
“I told our girls before the game that this is just another game on our schedule,” Souder said. “I had people all day say, ‘Man, you’ve got a big game today.’ In my opinion, there’s not any big games until March. This is just another game.”
And even Taylor said this wasn’t necessarily a statement win for the Titans.
“Because I know they can be better than what they showed tonight, and we can be better,” she said. “Both teams have so much more improvement to make. I really hope we meet again.”
