FRANKFORT – While the Bishop Brossart girls’ basketball team likes to push the pace with its 32 minutes of full court defensive pressure it was actually its patience on offense that proved to be the difference in its Touchstone Energy All ‘A’ Classic State Tournament quarterfinal game against Louisville Holy Cross on Friday.

Brossart, the champion of the 10th Region, patiently worked the ball around against Holy Cross’ trapping zone defense, consistently passing up decent looks from three-point range to get the ball inside, leading to 36 free throw attempts in a 49-43 win in Frankfort Convention Center.

• More prep coverage The Lady ‘Stangs (19-3), who converted on 24 of those attempts, advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. semifinal against Ninth Region champ Newport Central Catholic, which defeated Green County, 51-37, in an earlier quarterfinal game on Friday to advance to at least the semifinal round for the fourth straight season and fifth in the last six seasons. Brossart, which is competing in the All ‘A’ Classic State Tournament for the first time since 2003, beat NewCath, 48-45, just eight days ago.

“We have nothing but respect for NewCath,” said Brossart coach Josh Feldmann. “They’ve been the kingpin from Northern Kentucky for this for a long time and we’re just trying to make our mark. We’re excited about it. I didn’t think we’d see them eight days later on this stage, but it’s an opportunity we’re going to embrace.”

It’s an opportunity Brossart got thanks in part to how well it executed on offense against the Holy Cross 1-2-2 and 3-2 zones.

“They run a really effective zone, but what we noticed in our tapes and what we heard is they’re spread wide and they want to get you in the corners to trap, so we talked about being patient and get it into the middle of the zone where there might be a soft area and always look opposite,” said Feldmann. “That’s just another example of our kids really listening to what we’re trying to teach them and executing.”

The Lady ‘Stangs, who have no seniors on the roster, attempted just five three-pointers in the game, making one, and only two in the first half as they took a 30-20 halftime lead. They were 8 of 16 from the field and 13 of 18 at the line in the half.

“It’s hard to pass them up, because I’m used to shooting three-pointers,” said sophomore guard Abby Stadtmiller, who finished with 10 points and was 8 of 10 from the line. “We knew we had to work it inside first.”

Brossart attempted 18 free throws in each half with five different players attempting at least four free throws.

“A three against a zone isn’t a bad situation, but we didn’t want to shoot threes passing from wing to wing,” said Feldmann. “We want to go inside out so the girls can step into it with their shoulders squared.”

Brossart never trailed after the first quarter and took the lead for good at 16-13 a little over a minute into the second quarter on its only successful three-pointer of the game, by sophomore guard Morgan Verst.

The Lady ‘Stangs then seized control with a 7-0 run to end the first half, including scoring six points in the final 1:38 of the half. Their full court press, which caused 31 turnovers in a 54-31 first-round win over Harlan, forced Holy Cross into only 17, but four came in the final 2:15 of the first half.

“Towards the end of the half we got some points off it, but for the most part we were just trying to get them to play 84 feet,” said Feldmann. “Sometimes trying to make them go that length and make them play 84 feet has an effect on their legs.”

Despite Brossart going just 4 of 15 from the field in the second half Holy Cross (18-4) never got closer than five points the rest of the way, the last time coming with 3:29 left in the game at 41-36. Brossart sophomore center Sarah Futscher, who scored a team-high 12 points, then made two free throws to push the lead to 43-36 and Stadtmiller made two more to make it 45-37 with 2:17 remaining.
