After 16 seasons as the boys’ basketball coach at Moore High School, Larry Miller now has faced his former club twice this season as Male’s new coach.
And though Miller has enjoyed seeing his former players, the results have been anything but fun for Miller and his Bulldogs.
Daquan Boyd scored a game-high 12 points and William Bryant added 10 points and seven rebounds as Moore blitzed Male 46-28 on Wednesday in the second round of the Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament in Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall.
Moore beat Male 64-29 on Dec. 13.
“Those kids know I love them,” Miller said of his former players at Moore. “It’s good for them that they don’t have to play us again. They can concentrate on what they need to do to get to the state tournament.”
Moore (14-3), No. 7 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings, advanced to face No. 10 Manual (12-5) in Friday’s 7 p.m. quarterfinal.
The Mustangs shot just 39 percent (16 of 41) Wednesday but got big games from post players Bryant (5-of-6 shooting) and Mark Hoff (eight points on 4-of-4 shooting).
“Mark Hoff was huge,” Moore coach Shedrick Jones said. “He got scratched in his eye in practice (Tuesday), and we weren’t sure if he was going to play. He just fought through it. His eye was burning, but he brought it today.”
And the Mustangs brought it on defense, holding Male to 26.5 percent shooting (9 of 34). Lamarcus Taylor led the Bulldogs (10-10) with eight points but hit just 2 of 11 shots.
The Bulldogs finished 0 for 9 from 3-point range and committed 20 turnovers.
“A total breakdown,” Miller said.
“We didn’t move the ball, we didn’t share the ball, we didn’t run anything. It actually looked like we’d never practiced. I’m embarrassed for the people at Male that I did this poor job for this particular game. There’s no excuse for this.”
Two Josh Stoner free throws pulled the Bulldogs within 26-21 with 43.8 seconds left in the third quarter, but it was all Moore from there.
Boyd’s 3-pointer sparked an 11-2 run that made it 37-23 with 4:45 left in the game. Moore outscored Male 17-7 in the fourth quarter, hitting 7 of 9 free throws.
Jones said he was concerned about his team’s mind-set for the rematch after beating Male by 35 points in December.
“We just put the last game behind us and came out and played like we’d never played them before,” Hoff said. “We just played as hard as we could.”
Jones said that was most noticeable on defense.
“We guarded today,” Jones said. “When we play defense we can pretty much play with anybody.”

If Male hasn't improved any from what I saw at the Expo Center in Pikeville, they are in trouble.
