Three Northern Kentucky High School football senior standouts who were selected either first-team or second-team Associated Press All-State will be making their official visits to Eastern Kentucky University this weekend.
They are: Highlands wide receiver Austin Sheehan, Highlands defensive lineman Devin Bruns, who is being recruited to play linebacker in college, and Covington Catholic offensive lineman Bradley Way.
Before this past football season began, Sheehan accepted preferred walk-on status at the University of Kentucky, but after the 5-foot-9, 165-pound speedster caught 29 passes for 1,013 yards and eight touchdowns it opened up the door for some scholarship opportunities.
âItâs been insane,â said Sheehan, who was one of three wide receiver selected first-team AP All-State. âI love UK and always wanted to go there, and thatâs where my familyâs heart is, but I really donât know what Iâm going to do right now.â
He said he is also considering a preferred walk-on offer from the University of Cincinnati with the hopes of landing a scholarship if one opens up prior to the Feb. 1 signing date, and he was scheduled to talk with Indiana University last night, too. He has also had discussions with some Mid-American Conference schools.
Bruns, who is 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, played nose guard and some defensive end for the Bluebirds, said he, too has been offered preferred walk-on status at UC, where his brother, Drake, has accepted a scholarship offer.
âIâm really in the middle between EKU and UC,â said Devin Bruns, who was selected first team AP All-State. âI went up UC the other day and people were very friendly and just very welcoming, but weâll see what EKU has to offer.â
He said he isnât worried about making the move to linebacker, because he played the position until he was asked to move to defensive line as a sophomore.
âIt helped our team and I was all for it, but I knew that line wasnât where I could play in college,â said Bruns. âI know people donât think I can play at that level, especially linebacker, but thatâs what motivates me: people who tell me I canât do it. I had a friendâs dad who made a great analogy about whether or not I wanted to be a big fish in a small pond at Eastern or a small fish in a big pond at UC and I said, âI want to be a shark in the big pond.â ââ

^ Last year the got the area's best running back, Chris Kelly from Newport Catholic. He Red Shirted this year and from what I hear has been having incredible workouts since the season ended.

I would still like to see Kentucky offer Sheehan a scholarship, but that's awesome that EKU could snag these guys.

He is fast, but not very tall. He also is coming off an injury, so I would be surprised if they offered a scholarship.

Someone is going to be very happy to land the Bruns boy. He is a player and going to do very well in college, IMO.

Speed is not the issue - it's likely his size, or lack thereof. If Sheehan can get his weight up to 180, UK would likely be more interested in him as a scholarship player vs. a preferred walk on. Great kid and very hard worker.
