Knott County Central 56 - Letcher County Central 50
#1
Final from Hindman
#2
Great game for fans that waited two hours after Koree Stewart broke the backboard in pregame warmups.

Very physical game. Letcher went from up 9 to down 9 in about a 4 minute stretch at the end of the 3rd into the beginning of the 4th. Settled down and cut it to 4 a couple of times, but couldn't get any big shots to go in and Knott hit some big free throws. Great game by these two 53rd district powers. Definitely top 3 teams in the region. Letcher has the inside game and Knott has the guards, great match up to come again at Letcher.

Wow. That's crazy. What did they do so they could play? Get a new backboard? Play on another goal? Bring in a portable goal?

took down a practice board from the side of the courts and remounted on the court

I waited the two hours with everyone else. Great crowd and everyone waited. Worse I have seen KCC play. Missed wide open layups and shots that they make routinely. Stupid turns overs. They probably should have been beat 20 points and if they don't play better than this when they play PCC they will get beat 20 points. That being said, KCC had no answer for Stewart. Hall couldn't do anything with him. If Stewart had not gotten into foul trouble, LCC would have won the game. But I agree with all the fouls that were called both ways. Think that there should have been many, many more called both ways. Really rough game!!

KCC's play had something to do with how LCC played them.Give them some credit. If Stewart does not pick up a ticky tacky foul in the 2nd quarter with 5 minutes to go could have been a different result. Physical game with a lot of off the ball holding, grabbing, and moving screens. Both teams were allowed to play and players handled it well. The free throw edge made for the final deficit. Will be a real affair with the second game at LCC. Congrats to Coach King! Great game plan by Coach Hammonds!

They weren't going to call much by the looks of it in the first quarter. Took Davis and Justice getting hurt before refs decided they couldn't swallow the whistle and let them game happen to make up for lost time with the backboard replacement. My question is, why wasn't LCC assessed a technical foul? I know they dunk before refs can come out and catch them but the entire basket was broken. Doesn't that warrant as evidence that you were dunking? They cost several minutes of delay and it was absurd.

Feel bad for Letcher, they had the right game plan, Knott just hit their shots in the 2nd and they did miss some easy layups early. LCC allowed Knott to milk way too much clock in the 4th and were very stagnant when they had the ball in key moments. If you are going to beat KCC, especially at home, you gotta play 4 quarters.

Note of interest. Someone above mentions this rematch in Whitesburg, there is a great possibility they play again next week in the WYMT.

And to a majority of Letcher fans who attended, you gave up on your team too early and they could've used you who walked out with 6 minutes still to go. Knott fans learned this lesson when Cox hit the shots to knock Perry out of the 14th championship at Breathitt a couple of years ago. Many KCC fans were halfway to hazard (haha) already and missed a great run. Letcher still had a shot with a minute to go, they cut it to 3 but allowed a wide open layup from Adams. Don't quit on your team, especially on the road.

Knott, gotta show up and take care of business. They are subject down low, there is no question. When shots aren't falling, they lose. When they are, try can win big.

Did you watch the same game I did? KCC was whistled for 3 fouls in 1st half compared to 9 LCC fouls. Dont think refs have heard of illegal screens! Thats all KCC does in their half court offense. Dont think Hall called one foul on KCC all night, LMAO! How does he get KCC games anyways?

Will say that KCC players are gamers! Hit some nice shots when they really needed them. LCC has a lot of talent but have come to expect a lose in any "BIG" game. Seems LCC players have no heart or desire. Can't finish and put good teams away. Had PCC beat last year in regional......can never finish!

Cameron Justice....Best overall player in 14th. All-State player Jr. & Sr. year!

I think the rule is that the referees have to witness the actual dunks. So what you are saying is that Knott Central shouldn't get assessed a technical because they didn't break their backboard although they dunked as many times in warmups as Letcher Central. I am sure Stewart had planned for days to break the backboard. LOL. I was told by someone from Knott Central that the backboard was already cracked and should have been already been replaced.
#11
I am saying this purely out of the sake of the argument. If every crime has to be witnessed, does that make it ok? You can use the logic that you didn't see it no big deal, that's ok. You can also say, well Knott dunked but they don't get a T because they didn't damage anything, that's fine too. Additionally you can say they didn't plan on damaging the backboard which is fine, however you did. It wasnt the result of a three with too much juice as well as the delay it caused. However it did not affect the outcome and doesn't matter but it makes you wonder about the rule.
#12
So because there was a delay, someone must be punished. I say send the bill to Superintendant Craft and let her and Superintendant King banter over it.
#13
Officials do not have any say until 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the game.

Here ya go

i saw someone post this, and i couldnt help myself.

Like I said earlier, I was told they knew that the backboard was bad but they had not replaced it. Heck, even Cordia's backboards don't break.

That is an epic picture lol. If he gets a hold of this it will definitely be his facebook profile pic lol.

I have already seen this picture on facebook with the words "I DON'T ALWAYS SLAM DUNK.....BUT WHEN I DO, I SHATTER" on it.

May as well post it on here. lol

Bigger picture, Letcher let one go. Felt bad for them, especially the fans walking out.
#20
It was a school night, but if I stayed that long what was a few more minutes.
#21
He shattered the backboard and that's awesome.....butttttt I still think Davis is a better dunker.....It doesn't matter though, it's 2 points anyway you look at it lol
#22
It's 0 points in warm-ups. Would love to see this matchup again next week.
#23
I actually have saw a back board shattered twice. Once in warmups in summer ball game when I was a freshmen, Steve Sizemore did it in Pikeville. The other was when I was in grade school I seen a Hazard player (Josh Miller 160 lbs) do it at Hazard High School.

But....

Congrats to Knott on a good district win...

Not for sure but I think he only had 7 points! I know he didn't play much the first half because of foul trouble but, he missed a ton of shots in the second half, Evan Hall contested every shot and Simon Christon stole the ball from him a time or two when he put the ball on the floor!
#25
Actually, Stewart led the Cougars with 16 or 17 and played well. Justice for KCC started slow(due to good defense from Johnson) but rallied with about 16 in the second half to show what he's made of. Good adjustments by KCC coaching staff after they shot 28% in the first half. One factor that probably kept it close was that LCC is a very veteran squad with alot of seniors and KCC is a young squad with few seniors( lot of freshmen).KCC hit their foul shots when they needed to as LCC had to foul on occasion in the last 2-3 minutes I look forward to the next meetings of these teams.

I listened to the game and was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Letcher is still my dark horse to win the region, wish i could have been at the game though.

Usually happens after a long trip to FL. Sometimes you just have to be good enough to win. Sounds as if KCC is the superior team. Quote Jackie Sherill Miss St Football Coach "You can get fire up for the Florida's, Alabama's etc. but you just have to be talented enough to beat teams like Vandy, KY" I am sure KCC will be on their game vs PCC.
#28
if knott plays like this they surely wont win the 14th. and davis had better be alot better player than this if he is supposed 2 be the best player in the region.
#29
LCC is a tough bunch, make no mistake about it. Congrats to KCC on a close win.
