Behind sharp passing, deadly 3-point shooting and chemistry developed over several years, a small school from Tennessee can call itself “King of the Bluegrass.”
Craig Bradshaw nailed seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points and Jalen Lindsey added 22 points as Nashville Christ Presbyterian rolled past Butler 73-60 in Wednesday’s final of the Canfield Development King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale High School.
With 350 students in grades 9-12, Christ Presbyterian became the first school from Tennessee to claim the KOB crown in its 31-year history.
“We’re from a small school in Nashville, and nobody looks at Nashville,” said Lindsey, a 6-foot-6 sophomore who lists the University of Louisville among his top college choices and took an unofficial visit to the school Monday. “For us to come out here and win a big tournament like this is big for us.”
Bradshaw, a Belmont University signee who is the team’s only senior starter, hit 7 of 11 3-point tries as the Lions (11-1) finished 11 of 22 from behind the arc. In four tournament games, the Lions shot 41 percent (34 of 83) from 3-point range.
Lindsey, who also had six rebounds and three blocks, is one of four sophomore starters who have played together in AAU ball under coach Drew Maddux since they were 10 years old.
“Our chemistry is great,” Lindsey said. “And right now it’s better than I’ve ever seen.”
Demetrius McReynolds hit 5 of 7 3-point tries and had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Butler (5-4), a surprise finalist after entering the tournament with a 2-3 record.
It wasn’t the same Butler team that shocked No. 4-ranked Bullitt East 62-53 in Tuesday’s semifinals.
“I was a little disappointed in our lack of focus tonight,” Bears coach Shawn Purlee said. “I think we celebrated (the Bullitt East victory) a little too much, but we have something to build on now. After starting 0-3, this gets us back to understanding that we’re not an 0-3 team.”
The Bears led 16-15 after one quarter, but the Lions led 33-25 by halftime and put away the game early in the third quarter
