Lady Warriors down Pulaski 76-71 in OT
Southwestern’s Corder tallies 34 points in victory

Somerset — The Southwestern Lady Warriors and Pulaski County Lady Maroons both came into their showdown last night with identical, 3-2 records on the year, and both clubs were riding two-game winning streaks.

So, it came as no surprise that it took more than four quarters to decide the outcome in last night’s cross-town clash.

Good thing for the Lady Warriors that Tim Rice and crew had the top ‘Corder’ of them all.

Southwestern freshman Adison Corder played like a one-man wrecking crew at The PC Gym on Thursday night, pouring in a game-high 34 points against the Lady Maroons, helping her club survive a furious back and forth game at crunch time, with a 76-71 victory over PC in overtime.

Wow, what a game.

“This was a big win for us, but I’ll tell you right now, I don’t care what anybody says Pulaski County has got a very good basketball team,” noted a very happy Rice, after his club moved to 4-2 on the season with the win.

“Coach (Brian) Miller has done a great job with that program, and he did a great job tonight,” continued the SWHS head coach. “I have to give a lot of credit to our girls because they hung in there. We had that 11 or 12 point lead — I don’t remember what it was — and Pulaski County just fought back and fought back, but we hung in there and showed a lot of guts and grit tonight.”

Southwestern — behind the hot shooting from Corder and her running mate Destiny Molden — appeared to be well on its way to a win, leading Pulaski County by double figures, 27-15 midway through the second quarter.

However, as would be the case all night long, the Lady Maroons would fight back time and time again.

PC put five players in double figures, led by Brittany Warren and Mariah Meeks who each paced the Lady Maroons with 14 points each, helping keep Brian Miller’s club in this one.

Meeks scored PC’s first seven points of the game, and despite the fact the game was tied three times early on, Miller’s club never led in this one until midway through the fourth quarter, when Sarah Howard’s layup off a Southwestern turnover gave PC a 51-50 advantage with 4:15 to go in the game.

From that point on until the end of regulation, the Lady Maroons would never trail again, but the score would be knotted up on six different occasions by Southwestern.

“We don’t have any excuses, but Southwestern just flat outplayed us tonight,” stated coach Miller.

“They did a good job defensively by playing a triangle in two, and we just didn’t make enough shots,” continued the PC coach.

After Howard’s score gave the Lady Maroons their first lead of the contest, neither club could pull away from the other, with PC maintaining the lead over the final 4:15.

Yet, each time PC would pull in front of the Lady Warriors, Southwestern would have the answer.

Haley Warren’s two free throws with :39 left in regulation gave Pulaski County a 61-58 lead, but on the next trip down the floor, Corder drained yet, another three — one of five made by the youngster in the game — knotting this one up at 61-61 with :22 remaining in the game.

After a PC timeout, Howard would score off a baseline move with just :09 left giving the Lady Maroons a 63-61 advantage, but Molden would go virtually the length of the floor, and her score just before the final horn sounded sent this one into overtime, knotted up at 63-63.

Late in regulation, Southwestern’s Samantha Fitzgerald — who scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter — fouled out, while teammate Hannah Grant fouled out early in the overtime period.

Despite losing two starters, the Lady Warriors had enough in the tank down the stretch in overtime to pull out the five-point victory.

“Samantha got into foul trouble early, and never really got into the flow of the game due to being in foul trouble for much of the time,” pointed out Rice.

“We lost her, and then we lost Hannah (Grant) in overtime, so we came off the bench with Allie (Venable) and Dylana (Fothergill), and they both came off our bench and gave us a big lift,” stated the Lady Warrior coach. “Adison Corder had a heck of a game and so did Destiny Molden. I’m just proud of all of these girls. They all played great tonight.”

Southwestern, on the strength of a basket by Grant and a free throw by Corder, scored the first three points of the overtime session, taking a 66-63 lead over PC, but it would be short-lived.

The Lady Maroons went on a 6-0 spurt, and with Sarah Correll’s putback off a miss, PC had a 69-66 lead midway through the extra session.

However, Southwestern would fight back this time.

A Molden basket trimmed the deficit to 69-68, and then this one turned into a free throw shooting contest.

PC made 13 of 16 charity tosses in the fourth quarter to stay out in front, but was only three of six from the charity stripe in OT.

Still, the Lady Maroons had their chances.

With :19 left in overtime and Southwestern leading the Lady Maroons 74-71 after Brittany Combs’ two free throws, PC called a timeout.

Coming out of that timeout, the Lady Maroons turned the ball over, and coach Miller says it was a lack of focus in that crucial situation at crunch time that cost his team the win.

“Our mental toughness coming down the stretch just wasn’t there,” lamented the PC coach. “We weren’t mentally tough — that’s the bottom line.”

“We’re down three there with :19 left, and we called a play during that timeout,” Miller remarked. “When we got out there on the floor, all five kids looked around and didn’t know what was going on. That was very disappointing from that aspect. We have got to be mentally tough. Southwestern just outplayed us, and I give coach (Tim) Rice all the credit for that.”

After that crucial PC turnover, Molden sealed it for Southwestern with a pair of free throws with just :05 remaining, giving the blue and orange a hard-fought, 76-71 victory.

PC will try to bounce back tomorrow, as the Lady Maroons will be playing a pair of games at Edmonson County, facing Hancock County in the first contest.

Southwestern meanwhile will take on Pigeon Forge, Tennessee Saturday afternoon at 4:15 p.m. at Somerset’s Briar Patch in the first round of the Lady Jumpers Queen City Classic.
