Paul Laurence Dunbar's girls weren't ranked in anybody's pre-season basketball polls, but that's looking like a major oversight now.
The host Bulldogs knocked off Bryan Station 49-46 Tuesday night for their fourth upset of a top 25 team just three weeks into the season.
Dunbar junior Lexus Edwards drilled a three-pointer with six seconds left to beat the No. 21 Defenders.
"I was excited I hit it," Edwards said of her game-winning shot and only field goal of the night.
Dunbar had to battle back from a 14-point deficit in the third quarter, but that kind of comeback wasn't anything new. The Bulldogs rallied from 18 points down in the second half to beat No. 8 Ryle.
They toppled No. 9 Anderson County and No. 16 Scott County in less stressful style.
Dunbar's early-season success has come under Sarah Van Horn, the Bulldogs' third coach in three years.
Van Horn, who played high school hoops in Ohio and was a Division II All-American at West Virginia Wesleyan, isn't surprised by Dunbar's start.
"We knew how much talent was here, so we tried to come in and build a family relationship and pull together," she said. "These kids never give up. They have so much heart and so much fight, and it's crazy how hard they work."
That heart, fight and hard work was on full display against Bryan Station.
Dunbar couldn't have played worse in the first half. It hit three of 32 shots (9 percent) and had 14 turnovers. But it still only trailed 21-16.
The Defenders, led by Serena Sandusky, stretched their lead to 34-20 in the third quarter. But Dunbar responded, with Kierra Muhammad and Lakeena Parks sparking a 14-0 run that tied the game.
The Bulldogs edged ahead 43-41 and 45-43 on fast-break baskets by Muhammad.
Muhammad's free throw made it 46-44 before Sandusky tied it with a driving layup with 16 seconds remaining.
That set the stage for Edwards to fire up her three-pointer from the right wing and help Dunbar shoot down another top-25 opponent.
Muhammad, a 5-foot-4 junior, led the Bulldogs with 15 points, including 7-for-10 free throws. Parks, a 5-10 junior, had 12 points and eight rebounds. Jordin Fender, a 5-4 junior, added eight points.
Sandusky, a 5-8 junior who has committed to Butler, led Bryan Station with 19 points. Lakeysha Stennis had eight points and Hallie Crumbie added seven points and eight rebounds.
Dunbar doesn't have to wait long for its next challenge against a ranked team. It visits No. 15 Lexington Catholic on Saturday.
"We're just taking it one day at a time, one game at a time," Van Horn said. "But we can do big things here at Dunbar."
