Phelps 59 - Shelby Valley 51
#1
heard they did
#2
I was told by the ER coach they did...but it's weird it's not on here yet.

If it were me, I know I'd be so pissed I wouldn't get on here tonight. Almost didn't tonight after the loss to Pburg, lol. I'm curious to know how this possibly happened.

Valley lost by 5 or 6 points, i didnt get to make it to the game tonight so i dont have the detail yet sorry
#4
Paintsville's losses are starting to look better.

The score was 58 or 59 to 51. #15 for Phelps had a great game. After the game one of the radio broadcasters said he had 21 points and 19 rebounds.

If that is who I think it is, he is a senior and this is his first year playing. He is an athlete who would have been a beast had he played four years.

Yes. That's him and I agree.

Been looking everywhere for stat line on this game, can't find it. I'd think the Phelps coach would be calling that one in on the way off the floor.

I've seen and heard on here about how bad Phelps is. They may not be the most talented team in the region, but they definitely aren't a bad team at all. They have lots of size and the left handed boy shot the ball really well from the 3 point line. They are the type of team who will give SV problems because they have the size and strength to slow down Belter. SV didn't shoot the ball well, and that is a recipe for disaster when Belter and Newsome are struggling on the inside. Phelps plays hard and that is sometimes half the game. Knott County must be pretty good to beat them 50+ points.

Got to go to the game and to tell you the truth I was not very impressed with Shelby Valley. Granted, I know that it was an awful shooting night and one that may not be dulicated all year but the overall impression did not sit well with me. I thought that from last year to this year that there would be a sgnificant jump in how the team controls the ball and generally how the team played together. Though there is an improvement it did not seem like a "drastic" one as they still turned the ball over a lot! Still, the sky is the limit for a team with the 5-6 best players all freshmen and a sophomore. But as I have thought for sometime, this still might be a "growing pains" type year!

I usually agree with you. But in terms of KY High School basketball. Phelps is not very good. A good team should beat them by 20-30. What we have is a region that is just not very good. And I know, BL beat Male, SV hung around with Central. From watching Male, they would struggle to win a region in EKY this year. They do not have a player that can take over the game. And I left at halftime when Central was just running away with it. So, I cannot comment on the second half.

In reality, If you put the Paintsville team from a few years ago, 2010 SV, or even a couple BL, Pikeville, or Johnson Central teams from the past few years in this years region, it would improve a ton. On the whole, it is just not very good. There is quite a bit of individual talent, but no truly dominate teams.

ER and SC (Maybe Magoffin and Phelps, Not really familiar with them) could be the only teams I can think of that could consider this seasons teams better than any team that the schools have had in the past 5 years. Just My opinion.

What I am saying is that Phelps is not horrible like I have heard. People on here made is sound like Paintsville losing to them was the end of the world. The talent level in the 15th is about as low as I've seen it. The SV teams of the past 4 or 5 years (excluding last year) would beat everyone in it by as many as they want on most nights. The scores so far this season have been very hard to figure out. I guess a lot of these games have just come down to matchups though.

I do want to congratulate Coach Varney from Phelps on a good game last night. I coached against him in middle school for a long time and he has done a pretty good job at Phelps so far. That loss hurt me alot, but I know he felt great last night.

Phelps plays very hard. Congrats... Valley will learn and get better
#14
Wow...all I have to say. This is not the team I watched ER stomp @phelps the other day. They must have brought it. Where was this game, SV or Phelps?

As someone who watched the ER/Phelps game and ER and Phelps more than 1 time each let me say a few things

ER was down 19-13 at the end of the first to the horrible Phelps team as you call it, then #12 from ER hit shots he normally doesn't in the 2nd. ER didn't "destroy" Phelps except for a run in the 2nd quarter where Phelps couldn't score.

The 15th Region is DEAD EVEN, other than Sheldon Clark being a little better than everyone right now. No one is great every night. ER definitely isn't and neither is Phelps.

And looking at Phelps schedule, whoever put it together A) wants their coach fired, B) plain crazy and nuts or C)is the most confident/cocky bastard in the world AND is ignorant of who Phelps usually plays. They have played the best team in the 14th(Knott)(I would love to know what happened to cause a 50 pt blow out), and 3 of everyone's top 5 in the 15th(SV, ER, BL), and Mongo Central(who looks to be halfway descent).

Anyone got film of the ER/PBurg game and Phelps/SV game they shoot to me?
#18
Well for starters SV had way to many turnovers and missed opportunities, they missed so many free throws its crazy, missed layups, sloppy passes and on top of all of that they couldn't hit a shot to save their lives. I realized that if SV would've made 70% of their free throws last night they would've beat Phelps by 4. Just free throws. 2 of the freshman Hamilton and Maldanodo need to get more minutes because they are young and hungry and are the better bench players. They outscored 3 of the starters with less than half of the minutes they had. Another big thing is Defense, now don't get me wrong i seen a lot of effort but they need to get up in people's grill the way they are known for. These simple little things would've led SV to a cruisng easy win. Phelps isn't bad by know means, but they have had some players hurt in their other games that hasen't been able to play untill last night such as the left handed kid and they BIG boy. But each team will get better as the season goes on, SV is still my pick to win the region. This is just a little crack in the road. Good game by Phelps last night on a big win! Congrats!

Phelps isn't good man, they're bad. That's all there is to it.

I have film of the ER/Pburg game, but not sure you want to see it, lol. And it's more in a mixtape type format.

I wouldn't talk too much about recruiting, its kinda like the pot calling the kettle black....... The girls you all had playing over there a couple years ago didn't just move there......

Horrible post.

I assume your a player, and I respect how hard Phelps plays and your guys willingness to play anyone, but you are making yourself and Phelps look bad. Why don't you concentrate learning some kind of offense so you won't go 6 minutes without scoring and stay off BGR.

Congratulations to Coach Varney and his team!!
#25
I think Coach Varney is doing a hell of a job with Phelps! You say they are crazy playing the schedule they have, I say they are smart! Look who is in their district, Belfry and Pike Central. I do not believe anybody has really thought either of those two teams was a huge threat to with the region this year! Fact is Coach Varney is playing the best teams he can and its making his boys better and strong, both mentally and physically! I believe its Coach Haywood that says every year as long as we get better with every game. Well Phelps is getting better with every game and they are proving you best bring it when you play them because they can upset some of the best teams. The way they are playing, I would not be surprised if they are playing at the Expo Center in early March.

I'm a former player and now a fan but I remembered how we used to get disrespected by everyone.I apologize for my recent comments.

Phelps doesn't even come close to playing the toughest schedule in the area (Pike County). That is Pikeville and maybe Shelby Valley. Other than the one tournament and one game against Knott, it's about average for Phelps. But I applaud them for scheduling better, that's the only way you can get better, by playing teams of varying styles, etc. May suffer early on, but will pay off come tourney time.

IMO Valleys PROGRAM died with Booher and Valley is now just a TEAM. I hear alot of Valleys strong and semi talented athletes did not play because the coaches picked from the 8th grade and freshman kids who they wanted and told the rest of the upperclassmen besides a few to go home without a tryout. I understand that sometimes you have to look young and rebuild but the young kids need someone older and tougher to practice against to get better and then phase out the older boys throughout the season,, bad call by the staff to make it all about the middleschool and fresman kids from day 1, they need to learn toughness, discipline, and hustle to go along with their talent. Im not impressed by Newsome and Rowe yet. Tubby won his first year at Kentucky too with Patinos team, lets see where the team goes from here!
