senior forward Daniels was kicked off the team by head coach matt ratliff, after ratliff received word that Daniels had updated his facebook and the coach apparently thought that the kid was making him look bad. The statuses are very innocent from all accounts, and no names were used. Is this even legal?

Is what illegal? To knock a kid off your team? I don't think it is. I'm not sure though.
Can someone post what the status was?

Maybe legal was the wrong choice. Moral, normal, leadership-worthy, right, would all probably be better adjectives. But Daniels apparently only had 1 status that read Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go home after school and hang out with my friends? It would wouldn't it, something along those lines. The other status stated something about how I guess an open shot is not a good shot, and daniels went on to say that he was benched for shooting open jump shots. This can't be worthy of a dismissal from the team can it? I could see maybe a suspension but that's a STRETCH. just a sad story..

It is a privilege, not a right, to be on a basketball team and a coach has the right to keep or dismiss anyone for just about any reason. However a coach needs to use good judgement as does a player. I do not know what this player posted and it may be innocent, but I know that many other players from other teams have posted things that are detrimental and disrespectful to their teammates and coaches. In those particular situations, I think a coach has every right to tell a player to "hit the road."

there ya go..just ridiculous on the school's part. should be ashamed

The ACLU should be contacted, the school would have fun with that.

That doesn't sound that bad but I also do not know the history between the player and coach. Like I said in a previous post, good judgement needs to be used by all.

It's high school basketball though. And it's one of your seniors. A stern talking-to and some other form of punishment maybe.

The one about going home and playing guitar. The kid has to make a decision. He has the option to quit basketball and do that with his friends. But when you play basketball, its a comittment. Your making a decision to skip all those things to play basketball.
But the open shot one, I don't know what to say to that one. Did he take it to early? Did he have another teamate open for a better shot? There's a lot of things that factor into that. But in my eyes, if your open. Shoot it!! Lol

I agree with you. Like I said in two previous posts, good judgement needs to be used by all, including the coach.

Yes this is all good and true that he should make the decision, and I think it's clear that he was planning on playing his SENIOR year to help his team. And his facebook profile was not public either, so someone snitched about the statuses, but that's another story. The main thing here is that a senior basketball player was kicked off the team for some very innocent statuses. And yes, I'd like to think that the idea is to shoot it when you're open. lol

Wide open Foul Line jumper. I love Matt but he needs to take this one back.

Early Season "FRUSTRATION". Plain and simple. Got to get this out of the formula or it will be an even longer season.

I'm not sure what the team rules are, but I'm sorry guys, the use of social media has found it's way into school and team codes of conduct. It's a touchy line, but the original question was "legal", sorry, a privileged sport participation and legal are light years from being relevant enough to fight in court. Good luck to the player and his family in that battle against a school, they won't win!

I'd like to see Facebook done away with.
I swear that site is as bad as topix sometimes.
There is hardly anything good that ever comes out of it unless your 60 and only have your family on there.

AMEN! It is seriously awful for pointless drama. Young and old people!

I get hacked up all the time for posting 50 times per day on BGR. Granted, most of my posts are probably pointless to others, but my 50 posts pales in comparison to the number of posts made per day by people on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. There, everyone knows who they are, and these idiots post 100 times a day telling everyone what they are doing at that moment and how they feel. At least here, you can hide behind some anonymity, but on Facebook, you advertise to the world just how stupid YOU are!

Actually, there is legal precedent of a teenager who posted "negative comments" about a specific school in Arizona. The teen was kicked off of the team for the same reason and was then took to Arizona State Supreme Court. Arizona Court ruled in favor of the teen stating his first amendment rights were violated. Of course the Coach can always work around that...just saying if thats what he uses...

Tell that to every "transfer" who has fought a KHSAA decision of ineligiblity in court and found a local judge somewhere crooked enough to interfere in the business of the rightful state athletic authority...
I personally totally agree the courts should not interfere in any matters of high school sports, with the exception of criminal charges (e.g. the thumb tack incident, assault on an official, etc.)
12-08-2011, 07:40 AM
From a spectator's vantage point, it appeared that the kid was taken out of the game for what he was NOT doing on the court moreso than any particular thing he DID.
12-08-2011, 09:35 AM
I hope this thread is wrong! I think outright dismissal from team is harsh. As for the comment about KHSAA, it is not the 'State" it is a voluntary athletic association, and it is a dictatorship, that is why there are so many inconsistent rulings, and why Court involvement is a necessity, otherwise there would be no true checks and balances. If this post is true I don't expect it will ever make it to courts this is already to big black eye for Paintsville.

At least he can sit in the stands now............as long as he doesn't play his guitar when the cheerleaders are on the floor or doesn't wear black paint.
12-08-2011, 12:03 PM
well, I think it is o.k. to have a pep section, but do be careful what you say. Also, about the cheerleaders, give them a little respect, they work hard all year. As far as painting black, what does that have to do with anything. The pep section is there to help the team, but it should be done within limits from any school and I have seen some students that need to be tamed (some do go overboard with what they say and how they act). They need to keep in mind that they are still representing a school.

Paint red and you make the Indians mad. Paint white and you make the Nazis mad. Paint blue and you make the smurfs mad. I'm not sure what color you have to paint to make the Chinese mad, maybe yellow? No, yellow would be the color of the administration, so they'd be mad. Maybe turd brown would be best.
Hey, was the FWB Church that banned interracial couples from Pikeville? Maybe Paintsville should be their next stop.

First of all everyone needs to get their facts straight.. This kid is a quitter. He has played at Paintsville for three years now, and has quit the last two years. He is a cancer to the team from what someone has told me. And everyone left his best status out. This status has been deleted by the kid since then. "Well the jokes on you haha..I was gonna quit anyway." So I don't know why everyone is making this a big deal. The kid was done playing anyhow.

Your facts are actually wrong..the kid played the whole season last year...probably deleted it because he changed his mind..apparently he recently posted he couldn't believe he was done playin ball. People are making a big deal cuz it is a big deal. A senior player got kicked off for his facebook..lol

The coach has the right to do whatever he wants with HIS team. That's the way things work. His team, his rules. He wanted to get rid of a distraction to his team, or better said a "growing problem," before it was too late. I guarantee you if you ask the player that was dismissed, he would say that he was the one with the bad attitude and that he shouldn't have acted like he did.
12-08-2011, 02:38 PM
And for that matter, ask the players on the team. They know who was causing problems.

The other thread I started is what really makes me mad, this one I have mixed feelings about. So do the students there could be some really bad stuff go down at the ville over today and tommorow.
