UK played in one of the most enjoyable collegiate basketball games in the past decade against UNC on December 3rd . The North Carolina tar heels absolutely played out of their minds as they hit 11 threes as they shot an astonishing 61% from behind the arc and had 17 assists on 25 made field goals. As good as UNC played UK was still better as they out rebounded the Heels, had less turnovers and shot an overall higher percentage from the field. If the Cats can win that game, they could win every game the rest of the wayâ¦.right?
Next Saturday the Cats play a Hoosier team that has been rebuilding for the past 24 years. Tom Crean fooled the Indiana administration into to letting him continue to coach at IU just long enough to get Cody Zeller on campus. Now that Crean has Zeller and a fairly experienced team, maybe UK should start seriously considering their upcoming match up with the Hoosiers to be a difficult one.
Ever since Kelvin Sampson did his best impression of a 14 year old girl that couldnât stay off the dang cell phone, Indiana has been the laughing stock of college basketball. In the past 3 seasons Indiana is 8-46 in Big 10 play and 35-66 overall. When teams see Indiana on the schedule they mark a W and look to the next opponent. Perhaps this year is different.
Fact is, this isnât your slightly older brotherâs Indiana team. This particular team looks primed to have a winning season and hell, who knows, they might even make the tourney?
Indiana currently is 4th in the nation in overall field goal percentage and 8th in points per game. By comparison UK is 23rd in fg% and 16th in ppg. I hear what youâre saying, UK has played a tougher schedule and itâs true. Realtime RPI has Indiana having the 203rd toughest schedule in the country. Thatâs certainly not impressive, but it should be noted that Indiana handled their business every game so far by winning by an average of 22 points. Almost every team is playing cupcakes to build up some momentum to get ready for conference play, Indiana is no different. The only difference is Indiana is now blowing out teams they would have lost to in the past 3 years.
The other factor that should cause UK to be cautious about this Indiana game is the fact this will be UKâs first true road game of the season. This Indiana team (and fan base) knows exactly whatâs at stake. If they beat Kentucky, the #1 team in the nation, they will be launched into a national ranking and the buzz surrounding the program will extend beyond the state borders. UK has a young team, starting 3 freshmen and 2 sophomores. Will they be able to withstand the crowd going insane as they anticipate the biggest win of the program in the past 3 years?
UK has a full week to prepare for everything that Indiana will throw at them. UK would be wise to take Indiana very seriously, because Indiana isnât joking around right now.

Obviously if we bring it, we're not going to lose. But Indiana is not a team to be overlooked.

If we lose to Indiana, then I will perma-ban Aslan!
As much as I don't want to lose to the Hoosiers, I would LOVE to get rid of Aslan.......:biglmao:

I don't know who it is that thinks IU has been rebuilding for 24 years, but
they were in the title game in 2002. And had the refs not decided they
wouldn't call fouls on Duke for the last 10 minutes of the game in
'92, they'd have been in that title game too.
But the gist of the story is correct. Much like our downfall under Tubby,
IU had a coach inherit a turnkey team but was unable to build contenders
himself. And they fell all the way in, to the hole we were jumping into
after 2007, had Tubby not gone. But Crean HAS finally got them
heading back upwards. Certaily they are much better than last
year(that's called damning with faint praise) and could cause the
Cats some problems IF they take them lightly. But they will be an
easy victim #9 should we play with the same intensity that we did
against St. John's.( it's not really necessary to point out that Saturday's
effort KILLS any team in the nation is it?)

I've said it all year, that the Cats better not overlook Indiana. This is the Cats first true road game and it wont be an easy one. I really like this IU team, very talent and great coached.Heck, I picked them in my preseason final 4, lol... I dont think the Cats will lose but they better bring their A game.

Next year, IU is a top 5 team. Crean has done a great job rebuilding that program. Hopefully Crean can raise the UK/IU rivalry from the land of the dead. It's up to him. Cal's doing his part.

Indiana students chant "Beat Kentucky, Beat Kentucky" at the end of their victory over Stetson today.

I would LOVE to see the Kentucky/IU game back to where it belongs; Among the top rivalries in college basketball. I dont think IU can hang with UK this season, but hopefully in the upcoming seasons it can return back to a rivalry with substance.

It was an awesome rivalry. The last game I went to was 1999. After tailgating beginning with the 7:00 AM busride to Indy, I slept in my seat for the first last 10 minutes of the first half. Bad sign as the Cats went on to lose that game:igiveup:

To bad they dont have the players to "Beat Kentucky, Beat Kentucky" lol.
I honeslty dont see Indiana as a threat this year.
They could give us a game if we play like crap, but so could anyone.

It will be a tough first half as it will be the first true road game. It could be a 2 point indiana victory or a 50 point kentucky victory.

I think this game is a blow out in all honesty..
Indiana has been down for the past few years, I'm sorry but this game will not be close..

Cody Zeller's Freshman of the Week honor is his third in 1st 4 weeks. The Indiana F avg.18 pts., 7 rebs, 3 blocks, 2.5 steals for 8-0 IU.

I don't see UK losing to Indiana at all.

How the Freshman handle this hostile environment will be BIG.
They will be taking IUs best shot and if it stays close it could be a long night for the Cats.
If they get up early and apply pressure throughout the game they will coast.
This is a possible loss though.

This is UK's first road game period isn't it? Not counting neutral court games.

I'm more worried about Syracuse right now than UK against Indiana and I'm not even a Syracuse fan...Marshall is giving them a pretty good run, even though they were 0-15 from three point range.
Hopefully Zeller will get posterized just like that kid two years ago that tried to step up and defend John Wall driving to the basket.

Explain? What makes you say they are terrible? This is a new year, and are you basing this on the last couple of years? Crean is one the best coaches in college basketball IMO. IU isnt terrible. I can promise you that.

Don't care who their coach is.. IU is a joke! It's simple as that! The Old Dominion game will be closer than this one.. This team is still down.. WAYY down.. They have played noone to this point and I don't care how horrible the enviroment is UK will make quick work of them.. Their coach is OK, but that still doesn't mean anything to me.. At the end of the day if you don't have talent, you don't win.. This team is not talented.. I will even say 2 players going for 20 for sure in this game from UK.
Did they get some special recruit that I am unaware of? They still have the watered down squad they've had the past 2-3 years that have had their ass handed to them.. This game will not be close. And ultimately, this is why the rivalry hasn't been the same since the 90's.
