Highlands 42 Franklin-Simpson 14
#1
I'll give it to Franklin-Simpson. They're much better than I thought they would be, and if we don't get a couple of lucky breaks it is a much closer game.

^ I'd have to give it to F-S as well. They never back down at any point in the game and they made the Birds work for all that they got. As for the most prolific scoring team in KY HS history, the Birds did not disappoint by putting 42 up in the championship game.

Patrick Towles MVP of the game. Highlands broke the single season total offense record held by 1991 Pikeville team. Tied Trinity with 21 state champions and tied Boyle count with 5 State titles in a row!

Good game Franklin-Simpson!

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Quarterback Patrick Towles passed for 183 yards, rushed for 122 and accounted for two touchdowns to lead the Highlands High School football team to a 42-14 victory over Franklin-Simpson in Saturday’s Class 4-A championship game at Houchens Industries/L.T. Smith Stadium.

Towles, who has committed to the University of Kentucky and is a front-runner for Kentucky’s Mr. Football award, had a 19-yard TD pass to Donovan McCoy in the second quarter and a 1-yard TD run in the fourth.

Zach Harris carried 10 times for 90 yards and three TDs for the Bluebirds, who finished with 507 total yards (324 on the ground).

Highlands (15-0) won its 21st state title, tying Trinity for the most in Kentucky history. Highlands became the second program to win five straight state titles, joining Boyle County (1999-2003).

The Bluebirds won four straight 5-A titles before dropping to 4-A this season.

Jerrell Wickware carries 16 times for 127 yards to lead the Wildcats (13-2). Darrius Wickware, Jerrell’s cousin, had 23 carries for 97 yards and a TD.

How many seniors/starters will highlands lose this year?

I honestly thought that Highlands would score more than what they did but, none the less, they had a VERY IMPRESSIVE title run!!

Congrats on a record setting season Bluebirds!!

QB. Towles...McCoy will be a great reload at QB, no shock to the system. He stepped in and beat Elder so...

RB. True....Seidle and Harris will be the best two back field in the state

WR. Sheehan....Collinsworth, Christian and Turner will be a great stable

TE McGurn....Nick True will be big and strong, dont know if he catch

OLine will be experienced next year

D will loose a lot. This was their weakness this year so we'll see who steps up for '12

Give or take a couple, the Birds have 25 seniors, juniors and sophomores on the 84 man roster. The freshman team was just over 50. QB McCoy engineered the win over Elder. The underclassmen that were not starters, got significant playing time, as Highlands averaged playing around 55 kids per game. They will be OK.

Next year, we will reload, and win it all again.

Congrats to Highlands on the state title!

according to another site, at the end of the game, the HHS students where trying to get to the endzone to be closer to the players and celebrate. In the process the must have had to go past FS fans and adults, parents and others assaulted the kids. There were injuries and police were involved. Sad, sad story if it is true. It is a kids game and can not believe an adult would behave in this manner! I sure hope this is not true and blown out of proportions.

The Highlands students ran behind the FS crowd and started a big noise, taunting the FS fans. They made no attempt at getting close to the field till directed there by the police.

Injuries? Heard nothing of that. Highlands kids should have stayed on their side of the field.

I was quite impressed with the Highlands team. Definitely deserving of another State Championship. I look forward to seeing Towles as a Kentucky Wildcat as he is a special talent. If he doesn't make a big splash in Lexington I will be surprised.

Every player on the field for Highlands goes 100% every play. That is a result of intense competition for playing time. When you dress 100 or 120 or whatever there is a lot of competition.

I was proud of our Wildcats. They came to the stadium not with the intent to beat the point spread but to win the game. They stuck to the game plan and never got frustrated, they just kept playing hard. Had we gotten the TD, which I think we did, to tie the game a 14...who knows. I think Highlands wins mainly for two reasons. One, Patrick Towles. Nuff said. Two, most of FS's players go both ways. Fourth quarter was going to be tough for FS due to this.

It was a good game and the score is not a good indicator of just how competitive a game it was.

This is exactly what I expected. Highlands wins big and most of the Bluebird fans I've talked to we're impressed with the Wickware cousins.

Good job Highlands!!! NKY sends 2 teams to Bowling Green and both come back with state championships

I am sure excited "KIDS" were making noise and probably using bad judgement with some of their celabration, but in no way does that justify "ADULTS" getting in an altercation with kids. Sounds like you are justifing actions of adults because HHS kids yelled behind your sidelines.

Highlands’ high-scoring Bluebirds rolled pass Franklin-Simpson 42-14 in the Class 4A football finals in WKU’s L.T. Smith Stadium Saturday night.

The victory wrapped up an undefeated season for Highlands (15-0) and gave the Birds their 21st championship, tying them with Trinity for the state record. This was also Highlands’ fifth title in row.

Patrick Towles, a senior quarterback who has commited to UK, led the winners by passing for 183 yards and 1 TD, and rushing for 122 yards and 1 TD. This was his third title in a row as QB.

“Awesome, just awesome,” Towles said. “Words can’t describe how hard we worked to get this.”

Zach Harris ran for 90 yards and 3 TDs, and Jake True added 65 yards and a score. Donovan McCoy caught 4 passes for 69 yards and a TD.

Highlands piled up 507 yards, giving it a state-record 7,516 yards this season. It also established single-season state records for points (849) and TDs (121).

Franklin-Simpson gave the Birds a tough way to go early. It trailed 14-7 in the second quarter and was threatening to tie the game. But Darrius Wickware fumbled at the Highlands’ 1. The Birds then marched 99 yards to push the lead to 21-7 at halftime.

“The fumble was huge,” Franklin-Simpson Coach Tim Schlosser said. “If we score there, it could’ve been a different game.”

The Wildcats, who won state titles in 1979 and 1980, were in the finals for the first time since finishing runner-up in 1995. Jerrell Wickware led them with 127 yards rushing. His cousin Darrius had 97 yards.
