Franklin-Simpson vs Highlands (4A Championship)
Stardust Wrote:PAT good, Highlands leads 28-14, 5:05 in third

another 15 yd penalty by HHS, way too many this year.
Darrius Wickware fumbles on first down, but Wildcats recover.
F-S 4th-and-5 at Highlands 45, will go for it.
Really should be 28-21, FS looked like they scored before they fumbled two drives ago.
Now Wildcats call timeout.
Looked like FS crossed the goal line before the ball came out

I'm confident that replay would have given it to them
Bennett's pass incomplete; Bluebirds dodge bullet, take over at own 45
Punt the ball if you have any sense.
FS coach is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Highlands. But that might not have been smart
Here comes the Birds
Highlands leads 28-14 after three quarters.
Highlands with 3rd-and-5 at F-S 25
Jake True's 7-yard TD run gives Highlands 34-14 lead, 11:48 in 4th quarter.
PAT good, Highlands leads 35-14.
Do we have an official that can explain running the ball out of the end zone on kick offs???
F-S returns kickoff 65 yards to Highlands' 27

I'm no official, but I always thought that in HS, if the ball hits the end zone on kickoffs, or the player catches it in the end zone, isn't it an automatic touchback?
F-S returns kickoff 65 yards to Highlands' 27
Highlands stops F-S on downs, takes over at its 26.
HHS on the 1
Towles 1-yard TD run,
Highlands leads 42-14, 5:20 remaining
It's over. Highlands wins 42-14.
Continued with sloppy special teams all year, too many personal fouls and pourous defense, but Highlands offense has been unstopable all year. Congrads Birds!!

■Any kick crossing the goal line is automatically a touchback; kicks cannot be returned out of the end zone.

My interpretation (not an official) is as follows: If the ball crosses the plane on the kick it is a touchback and cannot be returned. However, if a player catches and is in possesion of the ball before the ball breaks the plane then that player can advance even if he/ball then retreats beyond the plane.
ie. Once the receiving player has possession of the ball, the 'kick' part of the rule no longer applies.

For one and maybe both of the questionable FS returns, the ball appeared to cross the plane before the FS player was in possession - a clear touchback IMO.

No kidding. But why argue, Highlands won inspite of the refs.

No argument from me...I just want to know the official rule. It is either one way or the other, and now I have seen it called both ways.
