Congrats Holy Cross
Fantastic game, perhaps will remain
as billed the best title game this year
The score was nearly the mirror image of the
loss to NCC earlier...what a great turnaround.
Great season for Glasgow as well...very intense game

Congrats Holy Cross. After watching Somerset against both teams I picked HC 35-14, I pretty much had it except for a couple of extra-points.

HC has a very talented team! I liked their style of play! Very entertaining, and exciting! Congrats cross backs!

Covington Holy Cross quarterback Kyle Fuller threw four touchdown passes as the Indians won the Class 2A title with a 33-14 victory over previously unbeaten Glasgow Friday night in WKU’s L.T. Smith Stadium.

Eric Walker caught two of Fuller’s TD tosses to give Holy Cross a 12-7 halftime lead. Lamar Chames turned a short pass from Fuller into a 62-yard TD play midway through the third quarter to make it 19-7. Fuller’s 18-yard TD pass to Burt Pouncy early in the fourth quarter pushed the Indians’ lead to 26-19.

Glasgow’s Parker Pash ran 14 yards for a score with 9 minutes left to trim the deficit to 26-14, but there was no more of a comeback. Holy Cross sealed its victory when Devyn Herndon returned an interception 14 yards for a TD in the closing minutes.

Glasgow, state runner-up for the fourth time, was led by Jalen Sublett’s 79 yards rushing, including a 28-yard TD in the first quarter. Cash ran for 72 yards and passed for 120.

Holy Cross was led by on defense by Paul Lampone, Adam Kozerski and Justin Kohake.

Indians Coach Bruce Kozerski, a former standout center with the Cincinnati Bengals, said leading this high school team to a state title was a good as anything he ever experienced in the NFL.

“I enjoyed every minute I played, but to be part of this and coach this group of players to this height is just a tremendous feeling. I’ll remember this moment forever.”

This was Holy Cross’ first championship game. The Indians didn’t start a football program until 1998.

BOWLING GREEN, KY. – Senior quarterback Kyle Fuller threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Covington Holy Cross High School football team to a 33-14 victory over Glasgow in Friday’s Class 2-A championship game at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

Eric Walker had two TD catches and Lamar Chames and Burt Pouncy both had one as the Indians (12-3) won their first state title in their 14th season of varsity play.

Glasgow (14-1) took a 7-0 lead on Jalen Sublett’s 28-yard touchdown run with 2:30 left in the first quarter, but it was all Indians from there.

Walker caught two TD passes in the second quarter to give Holy Cross a 12-7 lead. Fuller hit Chames for a 62-yard TD in the third quarter, and Pouncy had an 18-yard TD catch in the fourth for a 26-7 lead.

Sublett finished with 79 yards on 18 carries to lead the Scotties, who finished with four turnovers.

Holy Cross has won its first state football championship today, beating Glasgow 33-14. As I noted earlier, this is the first official KHSAA-sanctioned team title in school history.

Emotions flew after the game. This week, head coach Bruce Kozerski made sure his players knew the legacy of John Wysong, who started the HC program in 1998 and died in 2004. Lineman Adam Kozerski, the head coach’s son, was very emotional recalling Wysong, who he called a “second father.” Adam had tape on his wrists honoring both Wysong and his late great-grandfather, and said his father slept about five hours all week in preparing for the state final.

HC ended up with 282 yards offense to 272 for Glasgow. Kyle Fuller threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns, two to Eric Walker and one each to Lamar Chames and Burt Pouncy. Devyn Herndon had a late “pick-six” from 9 yards out for the final blow. Walker was named game MVP by the KHSAA. Bruce Kozerski said Fuller and defensive leader Paul Lampone (linebacker) were underrated all year. Lampone had eight tackles today and had posted 15-plus in every other game in the playoffs.

That’s all for now from a fun day in Bowling Green. It’s always a treat and a privilege to see a local team win a state championship, especially when it’s a “first” like this. Now I have to go look at photos for a while and file them. Look for my pics from this game in the Enquirer tomorrow, in a photo gallery on NKY.com tonight and tomorrow, in the South Kenton Recorder next Thursday, and possibly on a passenger pigeon somewhere as well. Richard Skinner will have his game coverage in the Enquirer, and my game stories will be in the Recorder Thursday and online before that. We’ll also have a photo page in the South Kenton Recorder this Thursday.

Who do they have to replace Fuller. This young man means so much to that offense, he has been the key ever since their loss to NCC in the season. He has done everything for this squad. Yesterday, he made "Football Plays" that you just don't ordinarily see from HS football players. He was so dynamic and creative with his decision making, those traits in a QB only come around every 25 years in a player.
