Called Ballard in this one! Congrats Bruins!

Ballard is loaded with young talent and if they find a way out region the next few years, they're very capable of a 3 peat in Lexington. Lavonne Holland can flat fill it up.

Chris Renner said it will take time for his young Ballard High School boys’ basketball team to find an identity this season.

If Tuesday night is any indication, this will be a typical Bruins squad — high-scoring, tenacious on defense and very deep.

Ballard trailed by six points early in the fourth quarter but responded with a game-changing 20-6 run to beat visiting Scott County 85-76 in a battle of state powers.

“We got down 66-60, and we could have folded,” Renner said. “But I was proud of the guys for fighting back and finishing the way we did. It shows a little bit about the capabilities we have.”

Ballard (1-0), No. 2 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s preseason poll of coaches, got 25 points from sophomore guard Quentin Snider and 22 from junior guard Lavonne Holland.

Cam Lewis (15 points, five rebounds) and Kelan Martin (nine points, 11 rebounds) also had big nights for Ballard, which shot 58.5 percent (31 of 53).

Isaiah Ivey, a Gardner-Webb signee, had 34 points to lead the No. 3 Cardinals (0-1). Marshall signee Tamron Manning added 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Coach Billy Hicks said his team missed a chance to put away the Bruins early in the fourth quarter.

“When we had a chance to push it out to eight or 10, we didn’t,” he said. “We squandered it … and Ballard had their run. I knew they were going to. That’s why I wanted a 10- or 12-point cushion.”

Snider hit four three-point shots in the first half as Ballard led by as many as 11 before Scott County rallied within 38-35 at halftime.

Down 58-55 after three quarters, Scott County got two three-pointers from Trenton Gilbert and another from Ivey to take a 66-60 lead with 5:52 remaining.

Snider said the Bruins never got rattled.

“We all have heart,” said Snider, who has committed to the University of Louisville. “We came back and dug in and did our thing.”

Holland’s putback of a Lewis miss gave Ballard a 70-68 lead with 3:42 left. Ivey’s basket tied it, but Scott County committed turnovers on three of its next four possessions.

Ballard took advantage, with five players scoring during a 10-2 surge that made it 80-72 with 1:55 left.

The Cardinals pulled within 81-76 on Manning’s free throw with 54 seconds left but never got closer.

Ballard used 11 players and scored 21 points off 17 Scott County turnovers.

“We still have to figure things out,” Renner said. “We have guys that have unique skill sets. These guys have to learn when and how to use those skills.”

Snider finished 10 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 5 from three-point range. Renner would like to see Snider have more assists — he had just one Tuesday — but overall was pleased with his performance.

“The reality is that they were giving him the opportunity to score,” Renner said. “That’s the great thing about Quentin. He has the ability to put up 20-plus a night, and at the same time he can create for others. We needed him to score tonight.”
