my prediction was 42-17, still no suprise here though, congrats to highlands on a well played game and breaking the points record.

LexCAth's offense, or Highlands defense, did a good job of keeping Highlands offense off the field. It never felt that Highlands was in any danger of losing the game, but it seemed like Highlands never had the ball. 2 kick returns for Td's were nice, but IMO, the offense would have scored too. Penalties kept LexCath alive all game.

It would have been nice to be able to see the scoreboard. The visitor stands are horrible. I also couldn't find the flag for the national anthem. It's time to overhaul the visitor side seats.

The fans of Lexcath seemed to be good people with good sportsmanship. Just upgrade those softball bleachers for the future. And who puts the scoreboard in that position? Parallel with the visitor stands? I could also send in a donation for a few bulbs on that mini-scoreboard above the pressbox.

Congrats Highlands. This was closer than I thought it would be. Hats off to Lex Cath for putting up a good fight.

I was at that game in '75 but missed the one in '82. Even though Highlands won by 21 in '75, I never felt the game was in hand. There was no quit in FS then and I expect there will be no quit in them this year. With that being said, I doubt FS can stop Highlands offense and I expect Highlands to bring home the championship trophy.

From what I heard on the radio, this was anybody's game until the 4th quarter!! Wonder what this says about Highlands?

Congrats on a great game and season LexCath!!

Congrats to Highlands on the win! Should be interesting to see how they do in Bowling Green!

I wonder why all the Lexcath fans were leaving in the 3rd then? Hopeful Lexcath announcers maybe the reason for the optism? It wasn't in doubt.

What happened to the running clock? Highlands defense did not stop Lex Cath. 2 missed field goals and 2 dropped touchdown passes did. Patrick Towles is a load to bring down. Seems like a nice kid. Best of luck.

Congrat Highlands on yet another win.
Im sure most of you already noticed this, but it just popped up into my head....
there may very well be a rematch of these two starting qb's next year at UK and UofL.
Im sure this will be a game many can talk about for year.

Colin Seidl was awesome tonight. Thank goodness he takes after his mother in his athletic abilities. His older brother may have had some older influences, but I'm sure that most of the athletic ability came from the mothers side of the family for both of the Seidl boys.

I'm a big Boyle County fan, but I really was pulling hard for Catholic to beat Highlands last night. You guys are a class act and I admire you and your team. I hope you win every game you play next year except when you play Boyle County. Congradulations on a good year!

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Colin Seidl had never returned a kickoff for a touchdown at any level.

But the junior ran two back for scores to help Highlands advance to the Class 4A state final with a 42-21 win over Lexington Catholic on Friday.

The Bluebirds have a won four straight state titles and have a chance to tie the state record of five when they face Franklin-Simpson (13-1) at L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green at 3 p.m. on Dec. 3.

“Those were the first two I’ve ever had, and it felt pretty good,” Seidl said.

Seidl fielded the opening kickoff at the 5 yard line, ran right, faked a reverse and took off down the right side of the field, going 95 yards to give Highlands the lead 18 seconds into the game.

Not only had Seidl not returned a kickoff for a TD, the entire Highlands team had been held in check all season.

“Normally, that’s our thing,” Highlands coach Dale Mueller said. “We pride ourselves on being the best kickoff return team in the state. We normally get three for touchdowns every year, and this year we had not gotten one for a touchdown.”

The early points were especially helpful since Highlands struggled to move the ball early in the game. The Bluebirds ran just nine plays in the first 16 minutes.

Lexington Catholic possessed the ball for over 10 minutes in the first quarter, but missed field goals of 36 and 50 yards on their first two series. Finally, the Knights broke through with the tying touchdown on a 21-yard pass to junior Adam Bush from sophomore quarterback Kyle Bolin.

That seemed to awaken the Highlands offense. The Bluebirds went 80 yards on seven plays, including a 30-yard strike by senior Patrick Towles to junior David Christian and a 17-yard TD pass to junior Luke Turner on a throw down the left sideline.

LexCath went three and out on its next drive, and the Highlands offense went 90 more yards for a touchdown with 1:28 left in the first half. Towles had three carries for 46 yards on that possession, and senior Jake True scored from 15 yards out to make it 21-7.

But the Knights’ offense got them right back into the game early in the third quarter. LexCath drove 78 yards on a 13-play drive and cut the deficit to seven, 21-14.

In 13 seconds, Seidl nullified that Knights drive by returning his second kickoff of the game for a touchdown, this time for 90 yards.

“It took away all their momentum and gave us all the momentum,” Seidl said.

The LexCath offense, rejuvenated in its first drive out of the locker room, looked deflated on the sideline and the field. The Knights lost one yard on two plays before Bolin’s third-down pass was tipped and intercepted by Highlands junior defensive back Ben Streeter.

And it was Towles again ripping off large chunks of yards on the ground. Carries of 15 and 10 yards set up his eight-yard right end run that made it 35-14 with 3:12 left in the third quarter.

“It got us more conservative on offense,” Mueller said. “We were looking to use some clock – we’re a passing team but we ran it a bunch – so two kickoff returns, that was big for us.”

Bolin did connect on a 35-yard touchdown strike to freshman wide receiver David Bouvier with 7:05 remaining, but Highlands answered again with a short field.

An on-side kick was recovered by the Bluebirds, and Towles’ 29-yard run on the first play eventually led to the quarterback’s one-yard plunge that iced the game with 4:11 left.

Highlands did not throw a pass in the second half, running the ball on all 24 of its plays after the break. Yet the Bluebirds still gained 130 yards on the ground in the final two quarters – an average of nearly 5½ yards per carry.

“Really, we just recognized our advantages,” Towles said. “Coming in we were better than them up front and the offensive line did a great job. When I run the ball, as opposed to a running back, we get an extra blocker, so I just saw some lanes and we gained some yards.”

Towles led all Highlands rushers with 121 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. He also completed 7 of 11 passes for 108 yards and one TD.

The Bluebirds finished with 339 yards of offense, with 231 coming on the ground. Lexington Catholic gained 302 yards, but just 78 rushing.

“This is a special team,” Mueller said. “It is such a great team to coach. I can’t come off the practice field and say that was a mediocre practice because the guys are so right on it, day after day after day.”

For Towles, he has a chance to win three state titles in three seasons under center. In games the University of Kentucky commit has quarterbacked since he took over his sophomore year, Highlands is 40-1.

“It’s my senior season, and I’ve got one more high school football game left in my life, and I’m definitely not going to go out on a loss, that’s for sure,” Towles said.

LEXINGTON – Highlands junior Colin Seidl wasn’t the biggest name in Friday night’s Class 4A state semifinal at Lexington Catholic.

He was just the biggest difference.

Seidl returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and then answered a long Lexington Catholic touchdown drive at the start of the second half with a 90-yard sprint to the end zone to provide the Bluebirds with the cushion they needed in a 42-21 victory at Joseph K. Ford Field.

Quarterbacks Patrick Towles of Highlands, a University of Kentucky commit, and Kyle Bolin of Lexington Catholic, who has committed to Louisville, lived up to their recruiting status but Seidl was the factor Lexington Catholic couldn’t overcome.

Highlands improves to 14-0 and advances to play for its 21st state championship next Saturday at Western Kentucky University. The state’s No. 1-ranked team will face No. 5 Franklin-Simpson, a 20-15 winner against Collins.

Highlands has won the last four Class 5A state championships but was moved to 4A this season.

The Bluebirds also pushed their season scoring total to 807 to break the 1998 team’s state record. Seidl’s kickoff returns were the first of the season for Highlands.

“We’ve been waiting and hadn’t had one all year,” said Seidl. “Coach (Dale) Mueller has had one every year of his coaching career and we hadn’t had one until now so it’s good to get one now.”

Third-ranked Lexington Catholic (11-3) rebounded from the opening kickoff and controlled play in the first quarter. The Knights just couldn’t put a dent on the scoreboard. The Knights had the ball for nine minutes, 59 seconds of the first quarter but had just two missed field goals attempts from 35 and 50 yards to show for it.

Lexington Catholic tied the score 7-7 when Bolin hit senior wide receiver Adam Bush for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 8:29 left in the second quarter.

Highlands’ offense had managed just 39 yards on nine plays in its first two possessions but got going on its third drive. Towles completed all three of his passes on the drive for 66 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown pass to junior Luke Turner. Turner took the quick out and read his blocking perfectly to reach the end zone.

Senior running back Jake True made it 21-7 with a 15-yard run with 1:28 left before halftime.

“Points would have been big on those two possessions but going in we felt like what we had to do was keep the ball out of their offense’s hands,” said Lexington Catholic coach Bill Letton. “We got good field position and did come up empty but did eat up a lot of the clock. If we had made one touchdown there and eliminated those two (kickoff returns) that’s a huge deal.”

The Knights got to within 21-14 on their opening possession of the second half. Bolin guided a 13-play, 78-yard drive that culminated in a five-yard touchdown pass to Noah Mitchell.

Then Seidl struck for the second time and regained momentum and a 14-point lead for the Bluebirds.

“Colin made a great read on that second one,” said Mueller. “it was supposed to go wider but he saw the blocking up the middle and he turned it on.”

Towles had scoring runs of eight yards and one yard to complete Highlands’ scoring. Bolin added a third touchdown pass, a 34-yarder sophomore David Bouvier for Lexington Catholic.

Highlands outgained Lexington Catholic 339-301, including 231-78 on the ground.

Towles didn’t attempt a pass in the second half after completing seven of 11 in the first half for 108 yards and one touchdown. He finished the game with 121 yards and two touchdowns rushing on 17 carries.

Bolin threw for 223 yards, three touchdowns and one interception on 24-of-43 passing. He rushed for 58 yards on 14 carries.

“We come in trying to throw the ball as much as we can but we saw that big advantage up front and decided to take advantage of it,” said Towles. “I consider myself motivated for every game but definitely playing another Division I guy was awesome.”
