BALLARD
Coach: Steve Kaufman (fifth year).
Last season: 13-15, lost to Manual 51-33 in Seventh Region semifinal.
Player to watch: Javonna Layfield, a 5-10 sophomore forward, established herself as one of the stateâs top players in her class last season, averaging 18 points and nine rebounds. Kaufman said she developed her perimeter game over the summer.
Other top players: G Melena Shanklin (5-5, Sr., 5.6 ppg, 2.0 apg); G Daryius Franklin (5-6, Sr., 6.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg); F Maddie Martin (6-2, Jr.); G Amhery Watkins (5-4, So.); F KiâAna Richardson (5-10, So.); G Alex Martin (5-6, Fr.); G Hannah Durbin (5-7, Fr.).
Outlook: The Lady Bruins lost two strong post players in Jaylan Bodiford and Ciera Woods but still have high expectations with Layfield leading the way. Shanklin and Franklin, the only seniors, should provide stability at the guard spots. Martin, a transfer from Manual, and Richardson figure to be the top players in the paint. Ballard could get a boost if junior Tearra Banks (23 ppg) is ruled eligible after transferring from Shawnee. The Lady Bruins were ranked No. 2 in the region behind Manual. âIf we continue to work the way weâve been working, I think we can be there,â Kaufman said.
