Conrtats to Garrard, but would have loved to see a Pirate vs. Pirate game with two men from P-burg as the respective coaches. Proud of you Coach Burchett.

I know I'll probably get killed for saying this, but Congrats on a tremendous season Powell County. Best Team in school history. reason I'm saying this is because I have ties to Powell County, being as I've had family that were Pirates but myself will always be an Estill Engineer!

Garrard County took the shortest route to the biggest win in school history.

The Golden Lions went right down the middle of the field, slicing through the Powell County defense and straight into Garrard history.

A relentless rushing attack helped them pound Powell 48-16 at Dyehouse Stadium to capture the school’s first regional football championship.
The victory in the Class AAA, Region 3 final set off a celebration unlike any other at Garrard, as fireworks exploded overhead while the players hoisted the trophy and danced at midfield.

“It feels great. It’s just a feeling you can’t describe unless it happens to you,”¿Garrard running back Cory Wilson said.

It had never happened to anyone wearing a Garrard uniform in the program’s 47 previous seasons. The Lions had lost three close games in three previous trips to the regional finals, but they won this one in convincing fashion.

Wilson and running mate Markell Hayes kept the offense moving downfield, rushing for a combined for 303 yards and five touchdowns to move Garrard to within one win of a spot in the state finals.

“It’s extremely special for meBut most importantly, these guys can now say with clear eyes that they’re one of the best teams to come through here, and they’ve given themselves an opportunity to go to state, and that’s what we all want,” Garrard coach Mark Scenters said. “That’s what every football starts the summer thinking:¿Give yourself an opportunity to get to state. And I’m just so happy for these kids and our assistant coaches and so many people who have been around the program for so long who are just so happy about tonight.”

Garrard (12-1), which won its 11th consecutive game and matched the highest victory total in school history, will host Belfry (12-1)¿in a semifinal this Friday with a trip to Bowling Green on the line. Belfry, last season’s AAA¿runner-up, advanced with a 28-14 win at Breathitt County.

The Lions punched their ticket to the semis in large part because they were able to punch holes in Powell’s defense for the second time this season. They didn’t get the kind of big gains that punctuated their 57-27 win over the Pirates seven weeks earlier, when Hayes ran for 196 yards and Wilson had 159 and Garrard averaged 8.1 yards per carry.

This time Wilson did most of the heavy lifting, at least in the first half, when he carried the ball 22 times for 148 yards to help Garrard build a 24-0 lead. He finished with 188 yards on 30 carries, Hayes had 115 yards on 15 attempts and the Lions averaged 6.4 yards per carry, with only three running plays going for more than 12 yards.

“Early in the game, we knew they were going to key on Markell,”¿Wilson said. “We ran him on a lot of motion, and the inside was open more than we thought it was going to be tonight, so we saw that and we jumped on it and just kept pounding it inside, and the outcome was a big win.”

Powell (8-5)¿played a 4-3 defense that Scenters said Garrard’s coaches hadn’t seen the Pirates play in person or on film, but he said the adjustment wasn’t that difficult for the Lions.

“They ended up keeping those safeties high, and I think by playing soft in the secondary, that probably led to some of our big runs, which is why I’m so proud of our offense tonight. We were able to put points on the board by chunking it 5 and 10 (yards)¿at a time, and both Cory and Markell made so many tough runs,” he said.

Garrard scored on its first possession but was stopped on its next two, but offensive lineman Ronnie Saylor said it wasn’t long before the Lions realized they could drive the ball at will.

“We felt like we could score,”¿Saylor said. “We were getting positive yards every run. We just didn’t get that big play we were used to. We were grinding it out.”

both Garrard and Powell is gonna be good next year.

Powell had too many turnovers and Garrard played an outstanding game. Garrard defense did a great job putting pressure on qb and forcing most of Powells to's. Was a very hard fought and clean game. Think there was only one penalty called entire game. Congrats to Garrard and good luck next week.

Powell had their best season in school history and PC is very proud of them.

Good luck to Garrard as they continue on.
