High school footballâs regular season finishes up this weekend with some interesting non-district matchups.
Unbeaten 2A defending champion Newport Central Catholic, riding a 14-game winning streak, visits 1A power Beechwood. The last team to beat NewCath was Beechwood, 40-39 in double overtime, in last yearâs regular-season finale. Beechwood will be missing a few starters Friday night, including QB Taylor Davis who has a collarbone injury.
Unbeaten 5A Bowling Green travels to 4A power Lexington Catholic. These teams havenât met since LexCath bruised the Purples 49-21 in the Class 3A finals in 2005.
6A Trinity, rated No. 2 in the nation by USA Today and Rivals.com, hosts Cincinnati Moeller. Trinity is looking for its first undefeated regular season since 2002.
5A John Hardin, on a 31-game regular-season winning streak, hosts 6A Boone County.
4A Highlands, a four-time defending state champ in 5A, looks for revenge at 6A Ryle. The Bluebirdsâ only loss in their last 52 games was to Ryle in last yearâs regular-season finale.
Defending 1A champ Mayfield, sporting a state-best 24-game winning streak, visits 2A Caldwell County. Mayfield, an offensive machine last year, is a defensive stalwart this season. It has given up the fewest points (48) than any team in the state.
Last week Belfry got its coach, Philip Haywood, his state-record 346th career victory. This week Belfry will try to keep Johnson Central running back J.J. Jude from breaking Derek Homerâs state career rushing record. Jude is 238 yards shy of Homerâs mark of 8,224 yards.
Itâll be a battle of Xâs when Cincinnati St. Xavier visits Louisville St. Xavier. Mike Glaserâs Tigers have a so-so 5-4 record (their most losses in a season in more than 20 years), but three of the defeats have been to undefeated Trinity, undefeated Bowling Green and undefeated Riverdale, Tn.
