A US man who tried to revive some roadkill – a long-dead possum, specifically - has been charged with public drunkenness after his mouth-to-mouth misdemeanour on a highway.

Police said a number of witnesses saw 55-year-old Donald Wolfe tending to the opossum (that's the non-colloquial word for possum) about 65 miles north-east of Pittsburgh last week.

One said Wolfe knelt before the roadkill and gestured as though he were conducting a séance, while another reported seeing him give the carcass mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

It's been suggested that the intoxicated fellow thought the creature was "playing possum", the fabled pretending-to-be-dead game.

But, as state police Trooper Jamie Levier affirmed, this particular possum had in fact been lifeless for some time when the attempted revival occurred.
