Norway shootings 7/22
#1
By now most have heard about this tragedy in Norway. The suspect not only set off a fertilizer bomb he then went on a shooting spree killing 93 people many who were teenagers.

The coastal elitist in this country loves everything about Europe from it's socialized medicine, economic policies, social policies, and what not. Do you know if this mass murder is found guilty the maximum he can get is 21 years in prison. Not for each killing but total time in prison. Is this really the direction we want our country heading?

Don't you love the way that our media is portraying the shooter as a "Christian fundamentalist" without providing any details? The only real detail that I have read that might be construed as a religious belief is that he claims to be a member of a modern day Knights Templar group of 80 "knights" ready to fight the Muslim invasion of Europe.

Unless there is more to this story, calling this crazy mass murderer a Christian fundamentalist is no different than branding KKK members Christian fundamentalists.

The apologists for Muslim terrorism will stoop as low as necessary to make their case that Christian fundamentalists are as likely to commit terrorist acts as Muslims, despite overwhelming evidence that almost all terrorism in this country in the past 10 years has been conducted by radical Muslims and eco-terrorist groups.

It is kid of funny how the media focuses in on that. Yet when an Islamic fundamentalist does something that stay away from any religious connotations

All the news I've been seeing is painting him as a "right wing extremist". The kids that were killed were at a political camp.

We all know the type of "news" that you see and post here. I am not shocked that everything you have read paints him as a "right wing extremist."

To what Christian denomination does the shooter belong? Where does he attend church Does he fit the American definition of a Christian fundamentalist or are these characterizations misleading at best? What Christian scripture has he cited to justify his senseless crime?

I have never seen a Knights Templar church, but then again it is a secret organization of Christian self-dubbed Knights that was founded in 2002, at least according to this delusional mass murderer.

The mainstream media, in case you had not noticed, tends to be pretty far left of center. They tend to label all violent extremists as "far right wing." Hitler is a good example. He was the leader of the National Socialist movement in post WWI Germany, yet the media never misses an opportunity to mis-label him as a far right-wing monster. In fact, he was a socialist who believed in an expansive government and central planning of industrial output.

What does the fact that the kids killed were at a political camp have to do with the question of the shooter's religion? The guy was obviously angry with his government's policy toward Muslim immigration but I am not aware of any Christian fundamentalist denomination who justify slaying innocent children as a means of political protest.

I think Ville is saying the attacks are reported to be motivated more by politics than religion.

If that was his intent, then I agree. However, my post was a condemnation of the American media headlining the shooter as a Christian fundamentalist without providing any evidence to support the claim.

I also have an issue about how liberal media and governments rush so often to brand terrorists and crazy people as "far right wing" or "conservative," when these idiots are taking action that they believe will fundamentally change government or society as a whole. Traditionally, people who have advocated radical change or the violent overthrow of their own government were radicals or left wing extremists, while those who sought to maintain the status quo were known as conservatives.

Isn't it Hitler's racism and antisemitism that gets him the "far right" or extreme right label? The socialist aspects of the philosophy were an outgrowth of his racism and antisemitism in so far as Hitler wanted a strong central govt to defend Germany against communism and the Jewish influence. To the extent that the Norway attacker was motivated by his fear of a growing Muslim influence in Norway's culture, he could be properly classified as "far right wing."

I don't think that means he gets out after 21 years. Reports over the weekend say that he can be held for longer than 21 years.

Racists are no more likely to be conservatives than liberals. Nor are they more likely to be white than persons of color. The fact that Hitler was a racist had nothing to do with his belief in a big, strong, centralized government that controlled the means of industrial production. Muslims in the Middle East allied themselves with Hitler and were eager to have the Nazis build concentration camps in their neighborhoods. Hitler and the Grand Mufti of Jerusaleum were staunch allies in the war against Jews and both were propopents of the "Final Solution."

So, according to the liberal media, we are to believe that the radical Muslims allies during World War II were far right wingers but the man who just gunned down dozens of innocent children in the name of sparking a new Crusade is also a far right winger? Do you see how the media attempts to cast the bad guys as conservatives whether the shoe fits or not?

Even the Wall Street Journal is labeling him as a right wing extremist. I think your beef is with historical definitions, not the "liberal media."

Our media is just reporting what the liberal Norwegian government and media is reporting. A responsible media would be questioning the veracity of those statements and doing at least some minimal investigative journalism themselves. I would be surprised if Fox News is not reporting the story the same way in its news segments.

My beef is with the liberal media because they are the ones who contort characterizations of villains to make nearly all of them "extreme right wingers." For a mass murderer to be labeled a liberal, a signed confession by the perp in which he describes himself as a liberal is required (but only if it has been duly notarized).

Yes, I meant it was more political than religious.

 I still see no reason to label this nut either a conservative or a liberal but we agree that the murders were politically motivated, although I suspect that his elevator does not go all the way to the penthouse.

Well what is Fox News calling him? I guess whatever they say will be the correct term.

Well, I guess not. Believe it or not, Fox's reporting on major stories is not much different than the other cable news network. They hire their reporters from the same schools of journalism as other networks. It is their balanced commentary that sets it apart. The news reports are referring to him as "far right," although I have not seen them refer to him as a "Christian fundamentalist." On Fox, you will hear conservative commentators debating the characterization with liberal commentators. On MSNBC, the idea of questioning the characterization of the shooter will never occur to their talking heads.

How would you describe radical Muslims? Left wing or right wing? If your answer is neither, then why must a murderer who has issues with his government be classified as a conservative or liberal - if not to smear peaceful folks who do not share his belief in violent action?
