Mark Biggs 2011 Mr. Baseball
#1
Warren East Senior Pitcher Mark Biggs has won the 2011 Mr. Baseball Award
#2
So the young Letcher Central players did a decent job against Mr. Baseball.
#3
WHAT? What happened to the Mr. Auto from LC?

Congrats Biggs!

Just looking at ALL the baseball knowledge displayed earlier in the season. And some wonder why they get no respect.

nothing against LC or Chandler but from what I've heard, Chandler's poor pitching performance in the State Tournament is what cost him on winning this award
#9
So one bad pitching performance loses it for Chandler, wow that is pathetic. Chandler comes through in that game 9/10 times. That home plate umpire was horrible but who cares Shepherd is better then that.
#10
^ I know he is. someone had mentioned it to me so I figured I'd share it with everyone on here.
#11
Where is Mr. Biggs going to college at? Is he D-1?
#12
^ He needs to go to UK!
#13
kid has better batting stats than chandler does...but by far chandlers pitching stats blow his out of the water

Actually, it was two back to back bad performances, at least in the minds of the voters, most likely. All they see is what happened against Pikeville, followed by what happened at state. Most of the voters are a "what you done lately" bunch. Chandler has nothing to be ashamed of, awesome career, and I hate to see it end up in someone else's hands, but the Biggs kid looks like he had really good stats too.

Biggs went in the 8th round. That could have sealed the deal.

Shouldnt have had any bearing at all.......its HIGH SCHOOL MR. Baseball

And whomever said they only look at "most recent" is probably correct........I would challenge anyone to find better career stats than Chandler has. Alot would argue Shepherd vs Biggs stats for their senior year Yes Biggs has better batting but not by a landslide and pitching stats were no comparison.

Again, I stand by geography playing a large role in this decision.

Chan made 1st team all state, signed with UK, and got drafted in MLB draft. Cant believe anyone is complaining.

As for this award geography plays a part, but it also plays a part in his stats. I really thought Spalding would win it after his showing in the state tourney.

Isn't the votes for Mr. Baseball already turned in before the state tournament starts.

Congratulations to Biggs.

I doubt it. The State Tournament won the Mr. Basketball award for Hickey and Justice the past two seasons.

As far as Biggs' pitching stats go compared to Chandler's, I will say that the quality of teams that Biggs faced day in and day out were the type of teams that you won't strike out 18 batters against. However, 50 K's in 36 innings pitched is outstanding. His ERA was low, considering the quality of opponents that he faced. Shepherd pitched against good teams, don't get me wrong. But when you play teams like GRC, Apollo, Allen County-Scottsville, Warren Central, and Owensboro day in and day out, you will be prepared as far as taking on the best the state has to offer. Biggs signed with U of L if I'm not mistaken as well.

Now as for Shepherd's outing against NCC costing him the award, I hate that for him and it's unfair to him. Unfortunately the state tournament was the first time a lot of the voters have seen him pitch, and people judge talent based on what they see firsthand. People see him get ran from the game in the 2nd inning after 85 pitches, leaving the ball up in the zone, and walking 6 or whatever it was and they think that he is overrated. He had a ton of hype surrounding him coming into the game and it's wrong to him that one bad outing on a big stage cost him the award. I'm not saying that Biggs isn't deserving of the award because he most certainly is. But Shepherd was probably equally deserving of it, and I genuinely feel like had he put on a stellar performance in the first round and LC wins, that he is the 2011 Mr. Baseball.

NOT complaining-Chandler has had a stellar career and has NOTHING to hang his head about.

Spalding's stats weren't that great for the year. The article that announced him winning 7th region player of the year had him batting .289(.280something) and 6-4 on the mound. I know he pitched against some good teams but still. He did play well at State. There is no way they use stats to determine this award. According to the Courier-Journal (Louisville paper) the Angus kid from PRP had better stats than all names mentioned in this thread. Im not saying that any player is better than the other. All mentioned are great baseball players. Im saying stats are not a major determining factor in this award. Congrats to Biggs and good luck to all on whatever path they choose. I hope they all go to college.

I think throwing a 95 mph fastball is the reason he went in the 8th round of the draft. Also, he missed about a month of the season with a sore arm. He is the best overall high school player I have ever seen. He will pitch and play outfield or 3rd base for Louisville next year. He couldn't work out a deal with the Blue Jays and is enrolled in summer school at U of L. If he stays healthy, you will hear more about him in the future.

^ You throw 95, you will get drafted!

There are a lot of other factors that are involved in Spalding’s statistics than meet the eye. Yes, his stats costs him Mr. Baseball. He showed how well he could play in the regional and state tournament. He pitching record was affected by his high school team playing an exceptional difficult schedule as well as his team struggling for much of the year to produce runs. Spalding took a 1-0 loss to Male. How can you win when your team produces no runs? He gave up only 2 hits, I believe, against one of the best hitting teams in the state. The run produced by Male was by playing small ball. The scoring run was produced by a ball put in to play in the infield to score the only run.

Spalding also took a 3-2 loss to Central Hardin, the eventual state champions. St. X was up 2-1 and in command of the game. I believe the last two runs Central Hardin scored were unearned. Central Hardin is also an excellent hitting team.

Spalding also took a 3-1 loss to Indianapolis Cathedral. Cathedral was ranked in the top 25 nationally in multiple high school polls. Dillon Peters was on the mound for Cathedral. He is a highly regarded left-hander that has committed to the University of Texas and was also drafted. I had heard that he was asking over a million dollars for his signing bonus. I had heard that that was a major factor in him not getting drafted higher. The score was tied 1-1 in the fifth inning. St. X had their scoring opportunities, but had difficulty producing other runs. The game was played in Indianapolis.

Spalding also took a 5-3 loss to Cincinnati Moeller earlier in the year. Moeller at that time was a top 50 nationally ranked team in multiple polls. Moeller got all of their runs in one inning when St. X gave Moeller six outs in that inning. The game was played in Ohio.

Biggs has a phenomenal, highly projectable body frame. He has tremendous upside if he stays healthy. I would not be surprised if he is a corner outfielder in college and beyond before it is all over. I congratulate him and wish him the very best.

Shepherd has had unbelievable high school statistics. I hope he stays healthy, particularly after already having Tommy Johns surgery in high school. He, too, has a very projectable frame as a pitcher. I wish him the very best. I had heard, though, from professional scouts that his fastball velocity most of the year was 88-90, not 90+ or to the mid-90’s. His performance in the state tournament with the radar gun at the stadium supports this (I had heard that the radar gun at the stadium as one to two miles an hour slower than the actual velocity). He does have a really nice breaking ball. I will guarantee you that Shepherd’s statistics would be much different if Lawrence County played the schedule that St. X did.

What round was Spalding drafted in?

Blue Chrome Wrote:What round was Spalding drafted in?

Signability, I think, became an issue with Spalding. Spalding is an excellent student and has a large scholarship to college. With what I heard, I think the amount that Spalding was asking for as a signing bonus dropped him down in the draft. He was a projected top ten rounder by different sources. In one interview, Spalding is quoted as saying he got a call from a team in the fifth round asking if he would take slot money. The Boston Red Sox ended up drafting him in the 29th round.
