With Charlie Davidson resigning and Tyson Gross the new coach of my lady Dawgs, Who will be the next coach at Owsley County? They do have some young talent coming up.
05-26-2011, 12:07 PM
Why did Davidson step down?
05-26-2011, 03:47 PM
The big rumor right now is Jeff Honeycutt to Owsley.
05-26-2011, 04:08 PM
^ then who would be the Coach of KCC Girls?
05-26-2011, 04:47 PM
Wow! Does anyone know how many different coaches they've had in the last 15 years? Seems like Owsley is looking for a new coach almost every year.
05-26-2011, 05:17 PM
that would be a good fit for both coach and school

What about Lincoln Spence? He has done a good job with Buckhorn's girls. I'd like to see him stay there myself but he is from Owsley.

I wonder if Ty is kicking hiself in the butt for taking the Hazard job now? I wonder if he'll resign and try to take over the program , he once played for?

Tyson hasn't signed anything yet, all he would have to do is say "No!" and take the Owsley County job.
But why would he want the Owsley job, I know it's his home school and everything but Tyson is looking to get his foot in the door... Owsley is one of the lowest teams in the region, I don't think anyone could really win there. Hazard's Girls are a middle of the region team and a well known school. (can't win the title next year tho.)
I think the Hazard job is a good job because I know what these young coaches are thinking... Coach Holland can't coach forever, and they want to show Hazard they can coach.... And if your going to coach in the mountains you want to coach at: Hazard, Perry, Clay, Corbin, Knott, Valley, South Laurel.... (where the talent is every year)

It would be nice if Coach Spence could return back to his home town to take the position in coaching for the Owls.. Does anyone know why davidson just up and left the program??? Wonder if he would still have a position to teach after he resigned?? Gross on the other hand is a huge shocker.. Im spoke to some of his friends and they had no clue that this was even going to happen and said it was kindly sat up for him to take the position at Owsley.. Best of luck to both coaches and the program..

I heard John Bentley was interested, but then he found out that Owsley didn't have chocolate milk on the lunch menu.

I didnt know he had not signed anything. I understand were your coming from but you know some people would just like to coach at the school where their heart is and than try to make their way up the coaching ladder. Hey, if your team was a bottom feeder wouldnt you like to be the one to coach them to the top? I'd say Tyson will stay at Hazard. I was making the statement wonder if he would like to go back to Owlsey after being named HC at Hazard. Tyson will be a excellent where ever.

I was told tonight in Jackson by one of the parents from Owsley, that have arent been any decisions made yet but would like to name someone before summer ball. I was told one of the names that came up already was James Turner from Riverside.

Riverside?>??? Lord god.. Owsley better hope and pray they call me tomorrow.

^ he doesn't seem to be a bad coach, he wasn't successful at Riverside because he didn't have the players to work with. I truly do believe that if given a Chance somewhere namely Owsley he can be successful

You need to do a little research before making comments like the bolded.
I admit that Owsley County has fallen on hard times in the last few years (although they did win the 56th district in 2010), but the Owls have a great tradition as being very competitive boys program in the 14th region. In the last 28 years they have won 10 56th district championships, 7 region semifinals, 2 region runner ups, as well as 5 All A region championships (2nd in the region to Hazard), 2 All A State Tournament semifinals and 1 All A State Runner-up. Owsley is in a down period right now like sometimes happens with all small schools, but don't think for a minute that they don't have the ability to be back on the competitive scene in the future.

who are some of the candidates for the position?

I agree. During the 1980s Owsley County had several great teams under Charlie Turner. They where a fixture with 20 wins and making the regional tournament and usually win some games there. In 1983 ( I think) Owsley County was the best team in the region led by Mike Turner, however in what was the worst officiated game I have ever seen Breathitt won the region. Also in the 80's they had players like Mike Turner, ??? Bowling (guard), and Joe Spencer all where top players in the region. Owsley County just needs to find a coach that will stay and build up that program.

School starts in about a month, you'd think they would've tried to get this job filled quicker.

How about Justin amburgey who used to coach at Knott Central heard he was looking to get back into coaching and this is a job that is a little more down his alley good job for a young coach. Or how about Kyle Lively I know he has coached at a high level and been to the regional finals before but would be a good job to get back in the buisness till he can get a more high profile job.
Owsley needs to be working hard to get this filled

Tim Parks former assistant @ Clay and Knott Central also coached at June Buchanan would be a great choice. Kids love him and really gets along good with parents young and energetic.

Kyle Lively is the Principal at Powell County Hign School. But if he did decide to get back into coaching, it would probably be at a little higher quality basketball school than Owsley.

Larry Sparks and Tim Bobrowski(I hope the spelling is correct) also had successful coaching tenures at Owsley
