Harlan County Black Bear Football Coach Tom Larkey has been selected to be one of the featured speakers during the 2011 Nike Coach of the Year Football Clinic in Louisville on Feb. 18-20.
Larkey, who led the Black Bears to its first regional championship in only the third year of the school’s existence, was named the 5A Coach of the Year this past season. He currently is the fifth winningest among active coaches in the state, with a winning percentage of 73 percent.Harlan County Schools Superintendent Tim Saylor, said that “Coach Larkey has done a remarkable coaching job of turning our (Harlan County High School) football program into a statewide power in only three years.”
The Nike conference traditionally concentrates on college speakers. Larkey will be presenting along with Doug Marrone, of Syracuse; Jeff Tedford, of California Berkley; Houston Nutt, of Ole Miss; Chris Ault, of Nevada and Doc Holliday, of Marshall University. Several other Division I coaches will be presenting.
Two other high school coaches scheduled to present are Lance Pogue, of Panola High School in Missouri and Eddie Evanston, of Newport Catholic.
Larkey’s 50-minute lecture will be on “the running game and playing hard, physical football.”
He has presented at various conferences and clinics during his career, but this is the first at the Nike event.
“It is a pretty big honor,” said Larkey. “I am excited about this opportunity.”
Larkey has 39 years coaching experience overall, compiling an impressive 260-98 record in his 30 years as a head coach. He is listed as 12th winningest coach in Kentucky history. He holds nine district championships, nine district runner-up titles, five regional championships, four regional championship runner up honors and two state championship runners up.
He has compiled many outstanding laurels for his success. These include being named the 2010 Class 5A Courier Journal Coach of the Year, the 2010 WYMT Mountain News 5A Coach of the Year, the 2000 and 2001 AP Coach of the Year, 2000 Big Dipper coach of the Year, 2000 Class 3A Courier Journal Coach of the Year, the 1991 Class 2A Courier Journal Coach of the Year and 11 District Coach of the Year awards.
He has 28 seasons without a losing record and 26 winning seasons, two losing seasons of 4-6 and two .500 seasons.
Larkey has been asked to coach the 2012 Kentucky vs. Tennessee Border Bowl. He has previously served as an assistant coach for the border bowl and as a head coach and assistant for the Kentucky-Tennessee All Star Game in 2004, 2003 and 1997. Kentucky won that all-star game in 2004 while he served as head coach and again in 2003 while he served as the head assistant coach.
Larkey and his wife, Darlene, have two sons, Chris, who is head football coach at North Laurel High School, and Dackery. Coach Larkey has three grandchildren, Christian, Kierra and Camdon.
