The Collins girls’ basketball team went toe-to-toe with the best defensive team in the state and one of the top teams in the 8th Region on Monday night.
The Titans, however, came up just short – literally – in a 39-37 loss to Owen County.
Collins had two chances to tie the game in the final 13 seconds, but Aaliyah Wells’ pull-up jumper spun in and out, then Leeara Cardwell’s last-second shot came up slightly short.
“That’s a game I feel like we could have had. We left some points out there,” Collins Coach Phillip Conder said. “But they’re a top four team in the region. They just beat Anderson County at Anderson County, so we know we can play with anybody in the region.”
Owen County (16-4, including 15-3 against 8th Region competition) came into the game leading the state in scoring defense (38.9 points per game), but it was the Titans (10-9) who led at the end of the first quarter, 11-9.
The two teams traded the lead in the second period before Rebels junior guard Rianna Gayheart hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, on the heels of a Collins’ turnover, to give Owen a 21-18 halftime lead.
“We can’t let the player of the year in the region to get a last-second shot at halftime,” Conder said.
Collins came out in the second half, and Wells and Cardwell hit back-to-back 3-pointers before Owen answered with six points to retake the lead.
Wells’ second 3-pointer, this one with 53 seconds left in the third quarter, gave the Titans a 31-29 lead. But it was short-lived.
The Rebels hit one free throw, then Christina Johnson scored with 10 seconds left in the period to give Owen the lead for good, 32-31.
There was a premium on possessions in the fourth quarter, as there were most of the game, Hannah Neeley’s 3-pointer put the Rebels up, 35-31, with four minutes to play. Wells’ layup with 2:54 to play – Collins’ first points of the fourth period – made it 35-33.
Johnson and Wells traded baskets before Courtney Waldrop’s layup, as Owen beat a Titans’ trap, put Owen up four with 1:07 remaining.
After a Collins miss Gayheart missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity before Cardwell hit a pair of foul shots with 22 seconds left. Gayheart missed another free throw two seconds later, and the Titans had two chances to tie it but missed them both.
“We got some good looks at the end. It could’ve gone either way,” Conder said. “The ball just didn’t fall our way today.”
Wells tallied 20 points and nine rebounds, and Cardwell had 10 points and five assists for Collins, which shot 32.6 percent (14 for 43) from the field. Mackenzie Raizor added nine rebounds for the Titans, who beat Owen on the backboards, 23-19.
Gayheart, Waldrop and Neeley scored eight points apiece for Owen, which shot 38.9 percent (14 of 36) from the field.
“I think we’re right there on our way to being one of the top teams in the region, but we’re struck right there at the corner. We just haven’t turned it yet,” Conder said. “We’re not quite there where we’re ready to compete for the region, but I think in a couple weeks we will be.”
The Titans, who traveled to Nelson County on Tuesday night, play at Franklin County on Thursday then host Highlands in a make-up game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
