Harlan County 2011
Dungy Wrote:Any chance that the QB spot would be open competition between Brewer and Jenkins?

It will be open but Coach also likes that experience back there. I felt like Jordy was ready last year but Williamson then TJ Green was in. A good competition will only make them both better.
We've had 3 different QB's in the three season's of existence. I think Brewer did a great job this year on both sides of the ball. Competition for a spot is a good thing. Jenkins will push Brewer to be better and vice versa. Anything can happen, like an injury (God forbid), so these younger guys need to be working hard to be ready to step in at any time. Go Bears!

Good point Mama!....I want our team to be stacked with talent!...well rounded!...And fully prepared!...

No position is given to anyone. You have to earn it!...and If you know/think the guy behind you could take your position, you push harder to keep it!.....Competition is a very good thing!
...
All great points I think the big thing, well one of the big things, we need to work on in the off season is a passing game. We have got to get into a game knowing if we have to throw the ball that we can and not hope that we can! Our new lineman will be key but they may help the passing game. It is always easy sometime to get in front of someone and pass block when we can't move them out of the way! I love our team just something’s to think about! I am a good ol guy who loves the run and sometimes more, but I realized this season we need to pass the ball too with a confident passing game!
Brewer threw the ball all over Powell Valley but not a whole lot after that. Granted we won a lot and Jordy was a big part of that! But he's not going to go out and throw three passes a game and be accurate. Not a knock on the kid at all I have watched and cheered him on for years but the only thing is that I think he has more confidence in his legs then his arm. As he matures I think that he will be more comfortable and figure out when to run and when to throw.
Well, personally I dont think there is any competition for jordy, i say this because there was no competition last year, atleast not with Anthony, However there is an upcoming freshman who is pretty athletic with a pretty strong arm by the name of Tyler Miller, and there is also the up and coming Zach Caldwell so to wrap up, Jordy has no competition, but Anthony has his hands full of competition for the JV QB spot...

I do not think a passing game would have won the Bell or the Highlands game. All the other teams we beat we blew out of the water, there was no need to pass.

Jordy threw the ball fairly well but there is only so much practice time and if want a dominant rushing attack then you have to practice practice practice that for a while and I know that Jordy works his tail off in the offseason throwing already.

What we are doing is working I ll leave it in the hands of those that are there each day in practice to figure out what we need to improve on. I just feel like sometimes there will always be something to work on and right now we are really good at running it and Jordy just isnt a pure passer that just isnt his game and no way was he ready last year to play he was weak and lacked confidence could not take snaps hardly due to being nervous. He is really good on his feet and his passing will come along im sure.
Jordy did work his butt off and it showed. Another offseason like last year (I wouldn't expect anything less from the young man) and some early success will help him and our team. A liitle strength and confidence in staying in the pocket just a few seconds more is all that is needed to improve the passing game. I am very confident and comfortable with Jordy under center.
I can't wait for the season to begin! How's our line gonna look for next year?

I guess different is the word. Replacing Jesse Hensley at center is important. But luckily we've got some guys to step right in and fill the holes left by seniors. I wonder who will be the punter?

HUGE shoes to fill in my opinion. Hope our young linemen are working hard. I know a few that have been hitting the weights hard even on these snow days. They are getting ready.

I'll take nervous but weak is not possible. The kid won his weight division in a big weight lifting meet last season. The entire team worked their butts on to get stronger. Jordy, like any other QB, will work and work and work, and when hes done doing that, he'll work some more. For his first complete season under center, his play was pretty good. But he needs to stay hungry and keep wanting to get better. The naysayers will always be there, including this upcoming season, but he and the rest of the HC team will join as a family and work as hard as they can. There were many first-time starters on that regional championship team last year. Theres alot of thing you can say about Jordy Brewer negatively, but one thing you can never say is that he doesn't want to get better and he doesn't want to win.

Coach Larkey and Coach Creech will teach and prepare Jordy. What we say here doesn't really matter it's what they think of him!

Glad to hear our boys are hitting the weight room even with all the bad weather.
I don't think a passing game would have allowed them to have won the games they lost. If you can't win up front it's hard to win the game regardless. There is not many high school teams across the state that do both well.
I'd bet money on the QB coach at HC over any other one in the state of KY. Just my opinion.

I've never been formerly introduced to Him, But I hear/see great things about him!...Wonderful guy!...Cares about each kid!....Dedicated to his job!...(even when deathly ill during a game!)...knows his stuff!...Hard worker!...and a Great family man!

This coaches presence is felt on and off the field and has my upmost repect!...As does ALL the Coaches!

Would love to meet him!....
He is for sure a class act! Our entire coaching staff is second to none! God, Family, School, Football they care more teaching out boys to be men. There's more to it then winning games, BUT winning is nice!
Luckily we have coaches that care about a lot and can win as well.
In my opinion depth and depth alone beat them against Highlands, which when you think about it is the only loss that really mattered. That is why in my opinion it is imperative for every kid on that team to get in the weight room.

Absolutely!...I couldn't agree more!...

Posted this on the fields thread but thought I would put it here to.
I really hope they dont put the track around the field like in the picture. Hopefully they will put it around there practice field or something.
It kills the atmosphere of the game and put bleachers back way to far.

i assum the field will be turf? due to the black bears writing in the endzone.

People can easily say this about the field but they have no knowledge of the situation. People do not understand that we do not have that much flat land to spare for a huge track elsewhere.

We have a large campus with the best high school in the state sitting on it but throw in a baseball field, softball field, football field and where would you put the track.

Rest easy, the field will not be that far away and the bleachers will be high rise so it will be awesome. The field will be 2nd to none anywhere. Guarnateed.
I'm not particulary fond of a track but that is a need as well. I'm happy to get the field they can put two tracks around it as long as we get a field! I don't think we will have a regular practice field, seems like I heard mention of using the soccer field (or the space where a soccer field is planned) to practice on real grass. The second phase of the field calls for the indoor practice facility. So there really isn't any other place for a track.
Brewer is a work horse. Jenkins has a world of potential. Jenkins has a very strong arm and is an athlete. Brewer has the lead with experience, but Jenkins got some last year in JV and freshman play. Jenkins is similar to Jordy in Jordy's sophmore year needing more time back there. Jenkins will provide alot in the years to come if he gets his mind on it and committed. Miller needs strength and will gain some very needed experience on this level in Freshman and Caldwell needs much speed improvement. These two will gain alot in freshman play and will compete years down the line. Both need time on this level. All need to get focused and committed. Right now that looks to be who? Jordy leads the pack. The Black Bears will miss Brian Owens, Calton, and Eldrige severely on Defense. The O-Line is my greatest concern. I know the youg talent is there and the coaching is definitely there, I hope these young linemen are working hard. Jake Middleton, Marcus McMillian, Maggard, Chitwood, Chorak, Lewis, Whitehead will provide the run if the line play is there. I expect to see alot of excitement this upcoming season provided by...THE BLACK BEARS!!GO BLACK BEARS!!!!
I think Brewer and the Bears will pass more...IF they need to. They do have some great receivers and some more speed this upcoming season to show. The kick return will be in Marcus Mcmillian's, Zach Chitwood, and Trevon Long's hands. These three will work hard to get the ball up field this season and may break a few. Bailey will drag down some incredible catches and show his skills. Maggard has developed into a very good receiver as well. This season will require improvement with each game... with a couple young ones on the line. With hard work, they will look like experienced veterans by seasons end. It will be great to see Tucker Lewis back out on the field. I predict you will hear his name alot every game. And I mean alot! That youngen is a work horse and a heck of a football player. If the Black Bears get to work and commit to it, together they will contend for the prize :1: Get to it Bears. I really love to watch those Black Bears!! GO BLACK BEARS!!!
Black Bears will be the state champs.
i think they have trouble being district champs much less, state champs
Some of these kids may not get a shot at QB, if I remember correctly wasn't Travis Fields an 8th grade QB? The are all talented kids I'm sure they will find the field one way or another.
I have a feeling that unless Jenkins really blows it up that he will have to wait on Jordy to finish. You can almost see a pattern and Coach Larkey like his patterns, plans, schedules etc. Having said that Jordy is a talented runner so he could be used elsewhere. But who knows? I'll leave it in the hands of commander in chief to make the right decision!
Since when did we start making problems when there isn't one there. Competition will be at ALL positions, not just QB. Last time I checked we won the district and region last season. Every year is a new year and competition is great for all positions. But I don't see the purpose of HC fans discussing possible personnel changes on a public forum. But I'm no football genius, maybe you all know more about the talent of the team and who should be playing where. Go Bears!
