The absence of Kobe Bryant's intensity in practice may have shown itself in the Los Angeles Lakers' less-than-desirable performance during a stretch in December.
In an interview with the New York Post following Sunday's home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Bryant confirmed that he hadn't been going through all phases of practice all year because of a knee issue.
"Because I have very little cartilage under my right knee cap," he said, according to the newspaper. "It's almost bone on bone."
Bryant's frustration came to a head after a home loss to the Heat on Christmas, a game circled on the calendar since the summer. That loss came on the heels of an upset by the Bucks at Staples Center. Bryant vowed to get more involved in practice, and according to the Post, his knee is swelling as a result.
The Lakers guard has undergone three operations on the knee and had to have it drained during the playoffs last season.
"Until I got it drained the first time during the opening round against the Thunder I could not bend that knee at all," he said, according to the Post. "It was swollen as **** and it hurt like ****. Luckily things got a lot better once I had the procedure."

Because of the knee, the decision was made prior to the season to "sacrifice the team's intensity by minimizing wear and tear as much as possible," according to the Post.
At first, things were fine. The Lakers won their first eight and 13 of 15, prompting talk that the two-time defending champions could surpass the 1995-96 Bulls' record of 72-10. They've been up and down since and are currently 25-11, good for third in the conference.
Bryant's numbers haven't really suffered. He's right at his career averages, posting 25.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
But he believes his teammates have suffered because he has not been infusing intensity into practice sessions.
"You know how competitive and combative I am on the court," he said, according to the Post. "There's nothing I like better than to practice. In fact, I like practice more than the games, because I get to go at my teammates hard. That's when you find out what they're made of, how much you can push some to get the most out of 'em, and how you have to back off others so you don't lose 'em."
"What can I do that I'm not already doing?" he said, according to the newspaper. "I've increased treatment before and after I play, but there's no way of knowing what's going on under there unless I take an MRI once a month.
"When do I push them? When do I pat them on the back? Every individual is different. Some players you finesse. Some you contest. It's a constant dance. It's a constant search of the perfect rhythm."
The results of Bryant's rededication to practice: The Lakers are 4-2 since Christmas, including the 104-85 disaster against the Grizzlies.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant made a running bank shot with 5:56 remaining in the fourth quarter against the Oklahoma City Thunder to move him past Elvin Hayes for seventh place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
Bryant came in to Sunday's game with 27,303, and only needed 11 to surpass Hayes' 27,313. Next on the list is Moses Malone with 27,409 points.
So far this season, Bryant has surpassed John Havlicek, Dominique Wilkins, Oscar Robertson and Hakeem Olajuwon on the league's all-time scoring list.
Bryant has been complimentary of each player he has passed on the list this season while also admitting his focus isn't on total points but championships.
"I don't know, we'll see what happens," Bryant said earlier this year when asked how high he will go on the all-time scoring list. "The ladder I'm more focused on climbing is Bill Russell's ladder, so we'll see."
Russell, the Boston Celtics' Hall of Fame center, won 11 NBA championships during his career. Bryant currently has won five titles.

Attention Shaquille O'Neal: Kobe Bryant is coming for you.
Bryant scored three straight free throws with 2:05 remaining in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' 101-87 win against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday to give him 27,410 points for his career, moving him past Moses Malone for sixth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

"It feels good," Bryant said after finishing with 26 points on 8-of-18 shooting. "I'm just very fortunate, that's all."
O'Neal, Bryant's former teammate who he won three championships with from 2000-02, is No. 5 on the all-time scoring list with 28,590 points as of Tuesday and is the only active player with more career points than Bryant.
Bryant, a two-time single-season scoring champ, is just sixth in the league this season with a 25.1 points per game average, but his points accumulation this year has marched him past a list of legends. He has surpassed John Havlicek, Dominique Wilkins, Oscar Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Elvin Hayes and now Malone to move from No. 12 to No. 6 on the all-time scoring list this season.
"He's crashing through records, one by one as he goes along," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson after the team's shootaround Tuesday morning.
Jackson played against Malone and remembers the center's inauspicious start in the NBA after Malone started his professional career in the ABA.
"I think he was held scoreless at Madison Square Garden the first time [he played there], and we were all like, 'What's the big deal about this kid?'" Jackson said in his pregame remarks. "But he did show us very shortly what the big deal was about him. He was very resilient and he also was very athletic in a very understated way. You didn't really see that athleticism until he got around the hoop and he was very effective."

With 26 points tonight, Kobe Bryant (5,223) would surpass Shaq (5,248) for 3rd on the all-time playoff scoring list.

Kobe is not even in the top 10 in all-time playoff scoring average (only fifth among active players). Skipping college and playing in the era of long playoff seasons are the only reasona that he is near the top of the list in playoff points scored.
Where does Kobe rank in career playoff FG attempts?

Don't get me wrong Kobe is an outstanding player, but outside of scoring the basketball he has never been able to do much. At this point in his career as far as amount of points, I bet everyone ahead of them at this same mark has a large amount of less shots taken. Kobe is a great player but I have said it 1,000 times, Lebron can do so much more and is twice as talented.
I saw something that caught my eye on 1st and 10 the other night, they pointed out a stat since Lebron and Wade has entered the NBA. Ever since then when it has came to a buzzard beater or the game winning shot, Lebron has made more feild goals then both Kobe and Wade, and has a higher feild goal percentage then both of them as well. So saying Lebron is not clutch is the wrong statement because as far as clutch stats Lebron shows he is more clutch. Give Lebron the best coach and best team in the NBA and he would win every year just because of how he makes everyone around him so much better

I can't sum up how much bs this is. Lebron has had quite a few game winners in the regular season, but who cares? Do it when it counts brother. Instead of having the best coach in the league he's joined up with two of the best players, he won't have any excuses left now.
And if you score points like Kobe, you're gonna take a lot of shots, that's how it works.

I can't believe i've just read this, I know there are alot of Kobe haters but this is just insane. I'm lost for words. Clutch isn't having a good field goal percentage? Clutch is being able to deliver when deliverence is needed. Lebron has not been able to do that...ever. Don't ever compare Lebron to Kobe in a clutch situation. That post is is a joke.
