HUNTINGTON, W.Va. â The father of Memphis Grizzlies player and former North College Hill star O.J. Mayo was charged with attempted murder Thursday after he hit a police officer with his car and dragged him for several feet, police said.

Two officers were searching for someone else at about 3:30 a.m. when they saw 39-year-old Kenneth Maurice Ziegler of Huntington in a vehicle trying to hide, police said. When they confronted him, he put the vehicle into gear, drove into one of the officers and dragged him, they said.
Police chased the vehicle for several miles through a Huntington neighborhood before disabling it with spike strips. Ziegler was captured after a short foot chase and charged with attempted murder, two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, obstructing, fleeing in a vehicle and fleeing on foot, police said.
According to police, about 85 grams of marijuana and several chunks of crack cocaine were found in the vehicle.
Ziegler was being held Thursday at the Western Regional Jail. Police say there also are outstanding warrants charging him with fleeing, driving on a suspended license and burglary.
Huntington attorney Jason Goad, who is representing Ziegler, declined to comment.
Mayo was aware of the incident, but he declined to comment through a team spokesman Thursday after the Grizzlies' practice in Memphis. Mayo didn't live with his father growing up. But Ziegler did help Mayo's mother, Alisha Mayo, hand out turkeys and hams in Huntington, W. Va., last month on behalf of their son.
Mayo led North College Hill to championships in 2005 and 2006. He's in his third season with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Sounds like he's got a little bit of the other OJ in him. And I'm not talking about orange juice.

In all the years that OJ was at North College Hill, I never saw his dad at any of the games or heard any stories of him.

Apparently because his dad is a piece of crap. I don't judge a book by it's cover, but this cover looks like it has been crap for a loooonnnnng time.

I have seen OJ's Dad before on the local West Virginia news being arrested for I think drug possession. I remember when OJ was a senior at Huntington High, he and three other males were pulled in a traffic stop by Huntington Police. Drugs were found. I'm not sure who was charged with what, but regardless, that's not a good situation to put yourself in.

It's OJ's father that pushed him to North College Hill in the first place.

Are you sure that that was not one of his " hanger's ons" that referred to himself as being his "grandfather" instead?

I know his former 9 year old AAU coach in Huntington and at the time they came in off of an AAU state championship he told me then that OJ's family life was horrible and that his dad at that time had served time for drug related activity. His reference to him at that time was "bad news". That was way back in about in about '97.

All anyone knows is that the kid lived with the mad considered his grandfather. That's the first that I have ever heard him termed anything otherwise and would have no reason to doubt it.

High school
Mayo began playing high school basketball at Rose Hill Christian High School in Ashland, Kentucky. In Kentucky, grade schoolers can play high school basketball, and Mayo averaged 23.1 points for Rose Hill's varsity team while in seventh grade. In eighth grade, he tallied 20.5 points per game and was named a first-team all-state player by the Louisville Courier. Mayo then moved to suburban Cincinnati to live with grandfather Dwaine Barnes. Mayo was still in eighth grade when he enrolled at North College Hill High School in April 2003. The Cincinnati Enquirer and local television stations sent reporters to cover Mayo's first day of school at NCH

This article makes the statement about Barnes as being "his adopted grandfather and AAU coach". How do you adopt a grandfather?
