Do shows like Desperate Housewives or Sex In the City place women in a negative light?
I think so.
No offense--but I seriously doubt that there are that many "housewives" in one neighborhood who sleep around, kill people, have affairs with men who kill the womans husband, keep a husband locked (in shackels) in the basement (and the kid is in on it), use sex as a tool to get what they want, etc, etc.
I try to tell my wife that shows like this just feed the myth that women are not on the same level as men--but she disagrees. I also think that shows like this glamourize trampiness--and make it seem as if it is the "right way to be" for young women everywhere.
Am I the only one that feels this way?

Okay, so you watch it--but, do you agree or disagree with my statements about the show?

I agree 100% KYH....I despise both shows. It brings out the true image of how some women can be.....

I love watching Desperate Housewives...I don't like Sex in the City too much...as for your statements I have never really thought about it like that.

Interesting responses so far.
It usually seems like women are extremely interested in the perception of their gender. So far, this wouldn't seem the case.

It's not different that watching Days of Our Lives or Passions or any other soap opera... it just comes on at 9 on Sundays instead of every weekday at 12 or something.

Okay--sorry if it sounds like I am badgering everyone tonight--but this one really FIRES ME UP!
How many times, in today's society, do we hear about TV shaping the thoughts and minds of today's youth. And I don't just mean kids. How about impressionable teenage girls? How about the young men who watch this junk and start to get the idea that women are really like this?
There are numerous girls in this area who try to copy the sayings, clothes, actions, etc of the people in these TV shows.

In today's society, a lot of emphasis is put on the images of teenage girls in how they are dressed, act, and what they say...
To me, they exploit all of these wrongdoings and contradict society in shows such as these....bothersome to say the least...

You pick on the girls but look at the guys...they all try to resemble NBA players and rap artists and is 99% of the time affected in a negative way...

The NBA proposed a dress code....
As far as rap goes, gangs and violence aren't based solely on rap. I mean it's not like, I'm going to listen to some 2pac and go rob or kill somebody. I'm sure it's influential in ways, but nothing like you'd think....
Back when Eazy-E, 2pac, Biggie, 2 Live Crew, Dr. Dre in his prime, and N.W.A. was around you could have a feasible argument. Nowadays, rap is a joke.....

Amen.
To answer your question, I watch Sex in the City and it really doesn't bother me. It is for entertainment. Yes, people somewhere are probably stupid enough to be influenced by such shows. But I am not offended as a girl because of the light that they try to portray us in...Live, laugh, and learn I guess. You can't spend your life being all stuffy about everything because you will never have fun that way.
12-07-2005, 04:35 PM
Come on now--this isn't about me being stuffy.
It is more about the fact that women, in general, have spent a lot of time fighting for respect. Then, TV portrays them to be complete trash.
It doesn't really matter if it is "just TV". It has to do with the fact that TV is glamourizing something that women have been fighting against for decades--RESPECT!
But instead--they watch, support and promote it. When they should probably be outraged!

We know its about respect but we know that it's just a tv show made for entertainment. You take things too seriously...lol...Just watch it and laugh like we all do...lol...

I see where you are coming from hillbilly.. a lot of women complain about victorias secret models being slutty because they pose in some of the things they pose in... I've heard a lot of women complaining about some of the most stupid things.
But now there are tv shows that basically make women out to be ignorant, and they teach that by using sex a woman can get whatever she wants..
I personally hate the desperate housewives, and sex and the city. both shows just get on my nerves.. But women don't seem to see a problem with it..

That hit the nail on the head, taxi.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me at all. But then again--I can't remember the last time I could make sense out of the women in my life!
It honestly bothers me that women are portrayed in this light. But it bothers me more (now) that women (in general) don't see what shows like these do to the overall perception of women.
If they can live with it--I suppose that I should get over it. :dump:

I guess that's why we love em so much lol..

People have their opinions about stuff. As for waht was said about the Victoria's Secret models...they get paid really good money to do that I would say...if you want to talk about models being slutty take a look at Playboy or the other magazines. Depending on who you talk to some people would see wearing low-rise jeans and a a low cut shirt slutty...everyone has their different opinions about all kinds of stuff not just about these t.v shows...it's just entertainment and people need to realize that and stop making a big deal out of noting.
12-08-2005, 02:32 PM
as far as magazines like playboy, hustler, penthouse, oui, teen dream, etc. well people know what to expect out of things like that.. same with victoria's secret models.. Those girls are stereotyped automatically, and for good reason...
But for entertainment purposes.. Everyone knows that T.V. affects people more so than the like to think.. and no one admits it.. and shows like the ones that have been mentioned do put a negative light on certain groups of women..

It does affect people and people are influenced by them BUT that is their own stupidity. When I see someone snorting cocaine on tv, I am not going to go out and snort cocaine. When I see a black man shoot a girl, I am not going to say Hmmm better not get around any black guys, they might shoot me. You can chose to stereotype the people you see on tv, but I choose not to. The media does not have enough influence over me to make me do anything that I don't want to do nor does it bother me of how they portray some women because it is for entertainment and the shows are funny. I loved watched Sex in the City because it was just a ground breaking show...

American hollow is something you all need to see. a true portrayal of how the fine people of east ky live from day to day.
If you dont think TV affects people and there mind set then you mine friends have never been off the ranch. i travel a great deal have been around the world and I speak from experience the mind set the people see in films and shows do carry weight. i have friends from Europe who to learn of Kentucky watched a couple of fine films about mountain living and the horse industry. They were shocked to find that i didn't have a deer head in my fridge, that we wore shoes and attended school past the 8th grade.
Do those shows harm women couldn't tell you i have never watched an episode of either I perfer to watch american chopper.

I am still extremely surprised that the women on this site see this as "no big deal". Just because it is TV doesn't mean that it doesn't significantly influence the people who watch nasty TV like this.
It is almost like a double standard in a way.
